Extremely moving. I wish all presidents would watch this and help truly free the world. As for me, time to break free of living in a model of civilation driven by fear. It's everywhere. Time to turn off the tv, the internet and cell phones and go talk to your friends, play with your kids, smile and realize that real happiness is at reach.

This is a much better translation of the speech. I have just deleted the introduction: "Let us take this opportunity to ask some questions out loud. All afternoon long, we have been talking about sustainable development, about rescuing the masses from the claws of poverty.
What is going through our minds? Is the model of development and consumption currently that of affluent societies? I ask myself this question: what would happen to this planet if the people of India had the same number of cars per family as the Germans? How much oxygen would we have left? More clearly: Does this planet have enough resources so that seven or eight billion can have the same level of consumption and waste that today is seen in the most affluent Western societies? Is that possible? Or will there be the need for a different type of discussion in years to come? For we have created this civilization in which we live: the progeny of the market and of the competition, which has given rise to a mighty and explosive material progress. I am not saying any of this to undermine the importance of this event. On the contrary, the challenge ahead of us is of a colossal magnitude and the big crisis is not ecological, but rather a political one.
Nowadays, man does not govern the forces he has unleashed, but rather, it is these forces that rule over man…and life. Because we are not born into this planet primarily to develop, broadly speaking. We come into this life with the intention to be happy, because life is short and it slips away from us. And no material possessions are worth as much as life, and this is fundamental. But if I let life slip away, working and working so that I can consume more, with the consumer society being the driving force - because ultimately, if consumption is paralysed or stops, the economy stops, and if you stop the economy, then the ghost of stagnation will appear before each of us - regardless, it is this hyper-consumption that is harming the planet. And it is this hyper-consumption that feeds of the manufacture of products that have a short life, because lots need to be sold. Thus, a light bulb cannot last on longer than one thousand hours. Yet, there are light bulbs that last on one hundred, two hundred thousand hours! But these cannot be manufactured, because the problem is the market, because we have to work and ours must be a “use and discard” civilization, and so, we are trapped in a vicious cycle. These are problems of a political nature, which are showing us that it is time to start fighting for a different culture.
I am not suggesting to return to the days of the cavemen, or erecting a “monument to backwardness.” It is just that we cannot continue indefinitely like this - being ruled by the market. On the contrary, we have to rule over the market.
This is why I say, in my humble way of thinking, that we are facing a political problem. The old thinkers like Epicurus and Seneca and the Aymara put it this way: “Poor is not someone who has little, but truly poor are those who crave more, and want more and more and more.” This is a cultural issue.
So, I salute the efforts and agreements being made. And I will adhere to them, as a ruler, because I know that some things I am saying might be unpopular. However, we must realize that the water crisis and the critical situation regarding the assault on the environment are not the cause. The cause is the model of civilization that we have created. And what we have to re-examine is our way of life. Why?
I belong to a small country bestowed with abundant natural resources for life. In my country, there are three million people, a bit more, three million two hundred. Yet there are about 13 million cows, some of the best in the world. And about 8 or 10 million of prime sheep. My country is an exporter of food, dairy, meat. It is a peneplain and almost 90% of the land is usable.
My fellow workers fought hard for the 8-hour workday. Now they are making that 6 hours. But he who works six hours, gets two jobs, therefore, he works longer than before. Why? Because he needs to pay all those instalments for the motorcycle he bought, for the car he bought, and has to keep paying instalment after instalment, and when he wakes up, he realizes that he is a rheumatic old man, like me, and his life has passed him by.
And one asks oneself this question: is this the fate of human life? This is very basic: development cannot go against happiness. It has to work in favour of human happiness and love on Earth, human relationships, caring for children, having friends, having our basic needs covered. Precisely because that happiness is the most precious treasure we have. When we fight for the environment, remember that the intrinsic element of the environment is called human happiness."
I'm Uruguayan and I'm no leftie, but Mujica has his moments of pure wisdom.

An urgent rescue had to be done to save it and hundreds of JOBS as well. Whilst the opposition and big investors wanted to sold it out so it could be re bought for pennies, Mujica and his administration used the backup of the Central Bank as guarantee and now support the transformation of Pluna into a workers cooperative. A brillant move.

igspal I'm also from Uruguay and I agree with Fabián, but the difference is that Vázquez is more conservative than Pepe and he focus more in economic development than Mujica. Also he is a doctor (specialist in cancer treatment), and he has a more formal view of life and government.

If everything is based on reaching to happiness. If every single human is doing their "things" to reach happiness, and if this is the right way (as He speaks); then some questions are coming to my mind to be told:
1- What if some people prefer this economic system in order to reach happiness? If whole system, whole economic relationships are making them happy, then what to talk about more?
in 9:43, he says :"Precisely, because this is the most precious treasure we have; happiness." So, to reach this treasure, to keep it in their hands, what if people might prefer this system he critisize?
So, he is speaking the truth mostly. But this "happiness speech" is just ruining it.
At the beginning he told that the planet doesn't have enough resources to sustain the "happiness" that the neoliberalism has put in the heads of people.
If the world seek the happiness that way... the future it's gonna be difficult. That's the point!! We need to change our paradigms.

Maybe much of the measures that goes oposite to workers benefits, can be explained by this limitation in his REAL power. Because REAL power lies in the CEOs of the main companies who give workplaces to workers (or who can destroy this positions also and generate unemployment).
I dont think in voting (delegating your power) as the way to go. But I understand your feelings.
I think Internet mediated direct democracy and open debates are the way to go.

It is true that they're taking part of our incomes, but we have to be happy because we're sure that the money is being used to satisfy the needs of low resource persons. I'm a 19-years-old uruguaian, I work voluntarily in a ONG. Poor people is living now in better condition (acceptable at least); nothing in comparision with what it was about 5 years ago, and this is reflected in the security (we have less robbers in the street).

The problem we have here is that this people is growing into a consumist culture, so they're not conscious of the effort we're making for them; they only think of BUYING. Our fault.
You missed the whole reason for his argument. It's not that he 'enjoys' his way of life better and thinks everyone should live that way because it's more fulfilling or something...
The reason he advocates living that way is because our current culture of competition and consumption is detrimental to the earth (which is what the summit was about); and with populations growing exponentially, things will only get worse.
We either need to greatly decrease our population, or change our culture.

The light bulb analogy striked me. I hate cheap stuffs that are cheaply made that you have buy a few more replacements, wasting much? I always rant, why can't they produce it properly, so it doesn't go to trash so quickly. Especially some made in China stuff are unacceptable, they go to dump almost instantly. You consider buying it over others only because it is cheaper than those that are properly made.
If all of us, what we use and wear lasts for 10 years long, instead of 1 lr 2 years, that could've saved so much resources already. But likehe said, the economy would be bad, so that would not be allowed by many.
I'm uruguayan too, and I strongly disagree with Diego. The tax he calls IRPF is just like the federal income tax of the US, and its marginal rates are even lower than in the US (specially on capital gains, with a flat 12% rate).
I do not believe Mujica and his party are running a perfect government or anything like it, but it is not nearly as bad as Diego and others like him claim. People like Diego are usually just taking the conservative side in a class warfare that has been going on in our country since 1904 (first presidency of José Batlle y Ordóñez). Mujica promotes an interventionist and socially progressive government, while the conservatists want a minimalist government, and sometimes also reactionary policies.

The situation is not near to be simple.
Poeple is used to high standards of consumption and without emploiment this standards may not be achieved. And if this standards are not achieved people will not give the power to the same politician line next time ..
