  • The United Nations General Assembly requests that delegates limit their addresses to 15 minutes. On 26 September 1960, Fidel Castro of Cuba remained on the rostrum for 269 minutes, making his address the longest timed speech in General Assembly history.
Delivered just one year after the Cuban Revolution that led to the overthrow of the U.S.-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista, Castro used his time on the rostrum to criticize U.S. imperialism and its interference in Latin American affairs and to accuse the United States of supporting authoritarian regimes in the region.
Utilizing material from the UN Audiovisual Library, this production offers a unique view into pivotal moments of this historic event.

Fantasy. There is a reason that there is no real communist, or if you will, Communist country on Earth. Communism is a fantasy that does not work. The first, deepest, most fundamental flaw of communism is the idea that you can have a dictatorship and freedom.

That's beacause they view the world through the lens of dialectical materialism, and scientific socialism. Hence why, the countries which followed the doctrine, have seen the biggest recorded economic growth ever in terms of GPD - WHILE the wages being ridistributed MUCH more evenely, which means that the whole society enjoyed the new-found wealth. Mao's China was the fastest ever economic growth recorded! But the achievments of the USSR, Cuba, Eastern Bloc etc., all under economic sanctions, were all very remarkable too!
Right wingers views are not consistent with the reality, they are idealistic

@@thatstorm_spectre Don't play emotional tricks on me. I'm from eastern bloc as well. You will have to provide sources of your knowledge.
All of the countries from Eastern Bloc had their standards of living increased like never before. Industrialisation happened at an incredibly fast rate, as most starting points were semi-feudal societies - compare it to how capitalism industrialised fully their countries, and you will see that it took hundreds of years. Some of the cointries started at incredily low standards of living, like Albania. In my country it took less than 10. Analfabetism was 30% before socialism - it was eradicated shortly after. Education was much much better. Real wages increased, poverty was lower, unemployment was eradicated, unequality was lower while general output of the economy was much greater. The most progressive time was up to 1956, then the capitalistic mode of production came back (in Yugoslavia as fast as 1948), but still, it retained some benefits. in ~1970s is when most of the countries adopted capitalism in a much larger force, getting loans form the west at absolutely terrible deals, and, because of gping back to capitalism, instead of planned economy, it couldn't meet the needs to pay them back (even tho even if they met them it would be terrible). THAT'S why the quality of life was absolutely detoriating up to the 90's - corrupt "socialist" governments had to make money to pay to their western overlords, so they were cutting benefits of the common folk, i creasing working hours, allowing western capital to come in (at favorable condition), which mostly focused on production that is of no use to the common people and damaging to the environment, while taxing the socialist sector.
EVEN THIS ROTTEN SYSTEM, was much better than the neoliberalism that followed after. The conditions of the poeples who siffered at that time are seen only st the times of famine or war. Most of the countries from the eastern bloc STILL haven't recovered from the neoliberalism of the 90s
Don't get fooled by propaganda, actually talk to the people, especially the working class of that time, and ask them about their opinion about the system, read some books which focuses on economic decisions of socialist governments etc.; if you are from Poland I can give you resources

Bro what on Earth are you talking about?? Yes, communism modernized the nations of east Europe at quick rates, as Stalin said "what they did în 100 years, we must do in 10 or they will crush us" but don't fool yourself into thinking this helped the people.
Firstly, communism didn't do anything special here. Yes it was faster than what the west did, but this isn't from some communist miracle, the Japanese Meiji restoration achieve much the same thing, bringing Japan from a backwater to a modern first world country, but without the political terror and shock therapy.
I feel bad for you, if I understood correctly you are from Albania, I am from Romania. Your country hasn't yet been allowed into the European Union, and I hope you will join us one day, but because you aren't a part of the common market you haven't experienced all the wealth we gained from it. Although, Albania nonetheless has had its gdp în real terms multiplied 5 times over în the last 30 years. And none of you are being imprisoned or detained for denouncing your state, at least I hope not.
My parents and grandparents lived through the Communist times, my grandparents on one side were farmers and my grandparents on the other were politicians. Of course my grandparents who were politicians lived well, but they aren't brainwashed, they know that their actions caused emmense suffering. In the opening years of communism, my grandparents had their farms seized and were beaten nearly to death when they resisted. All the old folks here lived that life and I dont know a single one who would prefer communism to now.
We are wealthy, with some of the largest year on year economic growth în Europe, we are free, with elections and our future în our own hands.
The 90s were rough for many economies yes, but it wasn't thanks to capitalism but the Creation of oligarcic monopolies. But in Czechia and Romania we widely managed to put those down, and as such we have much higher qualities of lives, especially than Russia or Ukraine which largely failed to stop that corruption.
If you really want communism, then may the Democratic process help you, but in Romania, you'll find anti communist slogans used often and every block has anti communist stickers. We don't want others to experience the suffering we went through, but if you think you can do it better this time, you are free to try again. But we won't suffer through that again.
But still, I urge *you* not to be fooled by propaganda. The solution isn't found in communism, we tried that and believe me, not even the 50s were anything close to a socialist utopia. But the answer isn't found in the Neo-Liberal policies of America, because we în Europe simply cannot recreate the American, Japan or Chinese miracles. As such our answer must be somewhere în the middle. And may we find it together as a Union, that keeps us free from foreign oppression.

As for supposed socialism or Communism, they may not have been perfect, but the failure rested with those who failed to follow the path set by Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Vladimir Lenin. After all, only the likes of Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot were BAD Communists and they had embarrassed the worldwide Communist movement throughout history anyway.

Note Castro never said a word about communism or being a communist nor did he declare a communist revoltion in Cuba; nationalization isn't exclusive to communistm. It did anger US companies in Cuba, and their influence may well have caused Eisenhower to snub Castro and cause him to move towards communism as one of his close confidants marxist Che Guevera wanted. Had Eisenhower met with and influenced Castro with aide; quite possibly he would have gone on a totally different path of a non aligned nation.
