The ESSENTIAL (& Simple!) Mowing Technique We Use To NOT RUT UP A Lawn

- Todays tip is regarding how to not leave divots or some best practices to not rut up a lawn! I know it's a simple topic for a lot of us, but I've actually received this question quite a bit, so here you go!
When I first got started cutting lawns, I tell you what, I had zero resources. To me it was simply retrace the same lines from the week before, and rinse and repeat. Oh how little I knew! (and still do sometimes!).
What I soon realized was that we were creating divots or little bumps and grooves in the lawn, that it was starting to affect the mowing quality of the work we were doing. Every now and then I would change directions, but it was really an afterthought. There wasn't really any rhyme or reason behind it.
Well today we're going to share with you guys a simple little practice you can incorporate into your business, and that is changing up your mowing direction weekly. There is nothing more ascetically pleasing as well in my opinion than a nice striped lawn with a cross pattern added to it.
Whether you go N to S, E to W, or diagonal, changing up the mowing pattern is a great habit to get into. It really helps alleviate any compaction you may be contributing to with the lawn mower, and help to not create deep ruts or grooves in the lawn. Best tip I can give you, change up the direction every week!
Hope this one helped you guys out! I wish someone explained something like this to me when I was first getting started, even as simple as a topic as it is.
Curious, do you guys also offer lawn rolling as an additional service to your clients to help with the after affects of a regular mowing season and constant wear and tear from the heavy lawn mowers we use? Love to hear your guys thoughts, leave us a comment down below!

You should explain the three point turn to the audience. So they know how to not make all the turn marks.and stay off the concrete. Lol. Some people will call about the green tracks or maybe even the black from the tires.
Yes, that was definitely a learning curve, after I was told the wrong way to prevent spinning a hole with the pivot tire and figured out the three point turn on my own
Sure pal we can do that, that’s a fun topic
I turn on concrete but do a lazy turn and not mark it all up. I also go half on half off around the boarders unless it's super high or low.
I just bought a new kubota . I’m pretty seasoned on a zero, but this mower is making me look like I’ve never used one before.
Absolutely! First time on my Wright I tore my yard up at every turn.
Hey Brian! We also change patterns every week so different parts of the grass blades get sun, well at least according to the turf management class I took last year lol.
Great video Brian! I get a lot of call for lawn rolling in the spring months, while the ground is still soft from the melted snow. Got a free pull behind lawn roller and had the tractor to pull it with, so I made pretty good money at it this year. It was kind of a nice transition till the grass started growing. One customer mentioned how much better his yard looked after it had been rolled in the spring.
I have a water filled leg power roller and I love it. Even here in Virginia we get some shrink/swell from winter time and of course a few stray mole hills. My lawn is zoysia cut at 1.5" so it shows just about anything that's not level. Rolling is a must for me, maybe once a month and especially as we come out of winter.
I'm starting a landscaping business,..I'm coming from the installation and rotation..pavers & retaining walls. But I know nothing about mowing lawns. So Super Thanks for providing me with some insight on how it done.
Good point on rutting. I'm always mindful of divots with turns, but hadn't thought of rutting by running same patterns. I will now. Thanks👍 As far as rolling... I bought a roller thinking I would have requests for it. I have yet to roll a lawn by request🤔 I use it on our lawn to stay in tune, just in case lol.
One of the first things my father taught me when I first started pushing a mower. Helps keep from scarring the lawn, too.
Love how you added the actor “running by” to really make this scene look real!😂
Lol we try to make it as realistic as possible!
Great tips Brian! I try to change directions with each cut, but I’m starting to see ruts in the outline pattern. The outline is the outline, so any tips on eliminating that? I’ve been trying to make that pass different, but it adds more trim work. I’m definitely gonna work on that 3 pt turn!!
We do the same thing. Always important to change directions! 👍
What a awesome till I never knew this will help tremendously thanks Briankeep up the good work wish you all the success
i have an older toro belt drive walk behind that i use .. at first i was divoting with it by turning to sharp .. Keith Kalfas gave me a nice tip and it took some practice but what i do now is i turn my mower towards where my next row is and then i pull on the handle toward me and this makes the pivot wheel turn backwards a bit and then i go forward as i line up my next row .. its pretty sweet unless your going on an incline then its tougher...
Love seeing this content, Brian!
Great mowing video... I love it.... the grass looks amazing 😁😁
I mow in the 4 directions. It seams to work well for me and easy to remember. Except for the border where I do two laps discharging inward do I have a place to turn around to avoid turning on paved areas (when possible) as well as plants and buildings.
I try, but there are some lawns, you just cant alter the direction because of the lay of the yard, banks etc....so i try and offeset the stripes.....dont know if that makes sense or not, i have almost no yards that are nice and flat and level like that one...mine are rough , hilly, banks , country yards....so i do the best i can....no complaints yet...lol
One of the yards I take care of has so many bumps and holes I don’t think it matters what I’d do. The yard is just jacket up. I do what’s easier for me and what looks best for the customer. They don’t use the yard at all. Plus previous company’s have rutted the lawn hood so if you go across the tufts it’s a violent ride. I did it once and I hit so many bumps so hard I actual broke off part of my finger nail from banging it into the steering wheel on my tractor.
great advise. just got back from south haven back to the real world. but i just change up every third cut or if its damp i will change it up
Could you do a video explaining how you should Bill your clients for the job. Depending on whether you used a riding mower, weed eating, or push mowed.
I could use some tips with maneuvering on a small 33 ride on. Without having to back up a lot. And making a different path each cut.
I change up every cut, using all 4 angles, so I'm only cutting each direction at most twice per month. However, on Memorial Day Weekend I'll do the 'X' to create a checkered pattern because Indy 500!
As for rolling, there's a tiny window at the very beginning of spring, just after the thaw, where rolling actually has a benefit. The ground is soft & pliable, but not saturated.
Brian, this is off the subject a little bit... but I know of a guy that really grew his business by going to new construction neighborhoods and once the builders moved off, they came in and prepped the dirt for sod, put down starter fertilizer, set up a fertilizer plan and eventually a sprinkler service and then the mowing contracts..... it's a lot to oversee, and it takes some ground work getting in with developers... but it's a great opportunity to have a say on landscaping from the perspective of the lawn mower.... might make a great topic for a video buddy... Cheers!
Hey Brian. From Denmark. I'd love to see some videos on how to edge / clean up a flower bed surrounded by stone. Both on the inside and outside.
Thanks brian! 👍 been waiting for this one. I am not able to do that on all of the properties i mow but i have taken your advice and did the half cuts in those tight spots until i can get a ztr with a smaller footprint.
For the Horde...
For the win
So do you guys change direction weekly like we try to? I think it’s a simple technique but a little known tip!
PS, do any of you guys offer lawn rolling too? We never have but I know we get a lot of requests for it in spring.
Brian's Lawn Maintenance I’m in Ontario I offer it, been rolling lawns in the spring for 15 seasons. Thr maybe compaction, but my lawns are all doing well, and lots of call for it . U show up and do one and three neighbors come wanting it done . I love it . Aerating also
I change mine every week. I typically mow twice a week so I do the same pattern twice in a row. When I want to make my lawn look its best I do a diagonal line from my drive way. I double cut that just to make thr stripes pop a little more. Other than that I change it up regularly.
Great tips!!
HUGE FAN! LOVE YOU BRIAN! My guys and I talk about your videos all the time.
Krumins Lawn Care - Nj
Haha thanks pal
Very cool! Nice video!
Most of us have a back up mower, use it sometimes. Saves hours on your main mower and helps you know it’s Good to go if you need it.
Great video!
Great tip brian
Any chance you're going to start doing some Q & A videos?! And also, any tips/tricks for mower maintenance to help your mower cut in a straight line? Feel like my steering is way too wonkey! Thanks!
I’d love to soon!
Isn't A davit when you turn your zero turn mower to sharp?
I have a plastic roller that I fill with water. Must be a couple hundred pounds when full. I use it mostly for grass seed jobs, seeding large bare spots. Not much call for rolling lawns. Suppose you could offer it with your other spring services.
My boy look like a robot in the seat mowing perfectly. Great work
I change directions every week. It helps the grass grow.
I didn’t know till I watch your video
Lawn rollering in early spring is very profitable, we use a 48inch x24 inch pulled by atv, its filled with water and weighs around 960 pounds works great, small yards 60 bucks, 70 per acre on bigger lawns, 👍👊🤟✌
What is the purpose of lawn rolling?
@@AdrianTV_ to smoothen the ground from winters upheaval in northern climates
@@grasshoppercrews1296 gotcha. I live in southern Texas. Not a common practice down here. Thanks for replying
Hey Brian, love your content and congratulations on 70K subscribers!!!
🇺🇸🎉🇺🇸🎉
I have a question maybe you can do a video on!!
While your out cutting your daily route if someone/ one of your clients neighbour asks you to do a one time cut, will you do it??
And would you charge a normal rate or increase the rate because it’s a one off??
Let us know or can you do a video on it?
Love your content and just a suggestion
Thanks again
Thanks pal!
And yeah we did a video on one time cuts! Check it out it was a fun one!
Ya l thought you did!!! You have mostly everything covered when it comes to lawn care tips and suggestions!!!
Again congratulation on 70K subscribers can’t wait till next video!!!
Good stuff
Great video Brian, I roll lawns it is more profitable than you think I use a small asphalt roller but I use it for lawns you only do it in the spring! For the don't rip up the lawn I also do a three point turn!
I dig it! Where do you get the roller from? Rental place?
Brian's Lawn Maintenance an asphalt company was selling one so I bought it and I also use it for some landscaping jobs also
Dale Nienow I do also, do one and three neighbors come out. Nice spring work, feels good and looks good. $$$ . Add aeration and fertilizer, Saturday’s in April are real money makers, I have a little Brutus roller, works great get in small gates!
Five Points Lawn it looks great when you are done and feels good when you are not bouncing around in your seat when mowing!
I also get a number of people asking if we roll lawns. Typically I found them to be people that mow their own lawns instead of them being potential mowing customers. I did want to possibly do lawn rolling ONLY if they're going to have us do aeration too, then maybe it will be worth it. Also, why would you compact the lawn (which isn't good) without you aerating it? Also, do overseeding at that time too. Yes, I get it about "spinning too many plates". ;-)
I’d try to roll, aerate, and fert/seed all at the same time to make things quick and easy. But that might be to big of a bill at one time for a customer.
Asphalt roller in the spring at thaw out time, That what i do.Aerate and seed
Honestly we "establish" mowing patterns and always mow in the same stripe every three mowings. Go on "light", come on "dark". Looks like most guys do the same as far as I can tell. I think that's one of the biggest tricks to good stripes. Most home owners I've spoke with don't know that.
Yes Brian, always change the mow patterns on every mow. Been doing that now for about 8 years and it does help eliminate turn marks and ruts or printing the yard. Good vid man!
I am 14 and was wanting to get into the lawn Care for a long term career.
Do it! It’s a easy businesses to get into and it done right you can set yourself up for life. You sound like a very smart young man to even consider that. Instead of wasting all your time on tik tok and whatever get out there and make that money while your still young. I wish I would’ve done that, I’m 26 and just now getting to that mindset that I need to start my own business
Does your mower fit in your trailer with the rops up? Also your blade tip to blade tip advice was great. I am starting to make all of my lawns look way better. Thank you.
Yup just barely! And that’s great. If you have other questions or ideas just lmk!
Brian, have you ever tried the My ride for Toro and ex mark? I’m surprised you don’t have it because it is the best and most comfortable !!!!
I change every other to every third mow, depending on how much I’m burning in my track.
On occasion I have charged an inconvenience fee. Most of my customers are good about their dogs and if they miss some waste on occasion its not a big deal because I know they at least try to cleanup after their pets. It's the ones that don't even bother to cleanup that I would charge the fee. I have switched directions pretty early on in me learning how to mow. I didn't add the third direction until a couple years ago.
I’m amazed at why you have 7 thumbs down . I personally have never found a reason to be so rude to a gentleman putting time in to help others . Love your channel bruh !
There’s only a handful of haters, everyone already knows who they are. Those same people own multiple accounts and troll. It’s adorable. The reality is they’re just wasting time, if isn’t beyond evident by now. They’re just jealous losers, plain and simple.. Thanks for watching!
Thnaks ofr the video
one quesiton if you have time:is zero turn mower ok cutting uneven loan with bumps and holes or is it better to have a front rider?
Yeah absolutely. Just possibly raise the deck to keep an even cut, or, feather with the foot pedal so you don't scalp those divots.
I just subsci be to ur channel what do u do about trees do u go around in a circle or u go forward back up a few times i buyt a farris 680v 3 years ago first time i had a zero turn but u hav sum GREAT VIDEOS hope to see a lot more THANKS
Spot on! My wife asked me, why do you keep going in circles on the ride on mower? I said, man she’s right, there’s got to be a better way!
Lol love it
Have you got a vid on K turns and how to properly do them?
We’ve done them! Check out our playlist on how to operate zero turn mowers!
Nice
Just bought my 1st Zero turn mower, how do you go around a tree without the back tire getting court on the tree??
Thanks Brian,
How much overlap from lane to lane? Is the tire in the same track going both ways?
thanks.
Tip to tip for blades, or edge to edge of the mower deck!
are all your lawns only grass? and if so how do you get it to that point?
I've been doing this about 4 years now and one of the hardest things for me is giving people quotes. Do u have any advice on the matter? Thanks in advance
Nice point Brian hey I have a question around how many hours do you put on your mower a year we do 60 to 65 yards a week my mower is a little over a year old and I have 1100 hours on it already but my mower is a encore fuzion 34 we have alot of small gated lawns and I really can't use nothing bigger I also have a 36 Wright.
Really just depends! 20-25 hrs maybe
@@BriansLawnMaintenance you only do 20-25 hours a week or year
Yo. Just got my first zro turn. Got the Craftsman weedeter and the edger hedger and pole saw attachment for it and a leaf blower. Any tips to make my equipment last longer or best way to use them????? Please help. I also started my own company. Need some advice
Regular maintenance and proper care!
Have you done a video on how to do a proper turn without tearing up the yard?
I can do that sure!
do you have any type of lawn striper?
Hey great video, what make, model are the earbuds your wearing in this film
ISOTunes pal! Brians10 saves 10% with them 👊💪
Hey Brian, thanks for video. Pro tip#176 mowing height? I know will vary for each region. I’m in Missouri with tall fescue as main grass. 3”-3.5” is healthy cut height for us.
We mow at 3-3.25”
Is that primarily a tall fescue that you all have around there also? Adjust at all as your reach the hot months?
I just raised ours a 1/4”-1/2” (fixed decks..) to try to help if it turns hot and stops raining
Brian quick question. What is the best range on your deck height settings. To get the carpet look out of a lawn?
We mow at 3-3.25
Is that also a good height for striping as well ?
I angle them one week and go straight the next week, if possible I turn around on the pavement
I mow for a golf course, we mow straight up, 8 to 2 and 11 to 4
Where did you get the material advertisement like for your shirts hats and truck etc???
Chants daily hustle for shirts,
Postcard mania for postcards
UZ marketing for yard signs.
I switch ways most of the time
Hey my name is Larry just trying to get some tips do you have any videos on how to trim hedges
We have a couple, but I do need to do more!
What height do you typically have your deck set to on yards like this?
3-3.25”
What height do you normally cut the grass at
Thanks Brian. You'd be wrong if you thought we didn't listen (lol). What RPM do you usually run at-low, med, high?
Medium!!
Holyshit that thing moves way faster than my Pro stance
One thing’s for sure... there’s no avoiding dog poop when you have a striping roller!
Also add in 3 point turn
What do you do when a vehicle is close to the grass/example side of driveway. Customer is not home. Should you get as close as possible without damaging the vehicle?? Obviously when we do our lawn we move all the trucks.
When striping a lawn should I start in the middle or side after I do my trim around the yard with the mower?
We usually slice a property in half when doing diagonal. For North/South we just follow the path of the sidewalk or driveway.
Ok thanks do you think different Mower decks have better striping quality?
steve de melio yes they do
Divots are caused in my yard due to dips in my soil. My yard is uneven. How do you cut that without scalping the lawn?
Fill in and level the divots :)
Can you do a video explaining how you should pay your clients per hour, per yard, ride mowing, weed eating, push mower .etc
I’m sorry I don’t understand your question
@@BriansLawnMaintenance I think they'd like a video about how you pay or would pay your employees for various jobs and would it be per job or per hour, etc.
Should it be better to go in consecutive circles getting smaller instead of 3 point turning all the time
Brian what about just starting out & you can't afford the zero turn & walk behind & trailer?
Then rock a good used mower, or a new push 21", it can be done.
48 seconds short Brian. If we are talking about maximizing profits here.
Couldn’t care less about adding 38 additional ads. Hope you enjoyed the video though.
@@BriansLawnMaintenance Lmao, yeah good tips about changing directions, I'm guilty of choosing a direction and going that direction for like a month straight.
Why wouldn't someone want to make a cool pattern on a lawn? Take some pride and make it look awesome. Change your direction up every other week. Back and fourth. It really makes someone look professional.
We do four different ways for a four week month.
Brian this is Dan Fontaine from Rolling Hills lawn care one of the things that I like to do I notice you like the stripe straight one of the things I like to do is carve my stripes some of the lines it looks really cool and that way I'm not having to change my patterns all the time let me know what you think about that a lot of my customers really like it
How do I not divot the lawns when I turn.
3 point turn
When do leaves up in Michigan start changing colors?
Fall/Oct
How do you keep from tearing up the lawn when you make turns with a zero turn mower?
3 point k turns 🙏
@@BriansLawnMaintenance even with the 3 point turns I notice the swivel wheels still makes a mark where you turn
Looking for some ideas for new videos?? You can literally make the same exact videos every week Keith Kalfas style about how to start a lawn/landscape from nothing by telling your life story about how you worked a dead end job, you were about to be evicted, bought a cheap craiglist truck, borrowed tools, and then started doing jobs until you worked up enough money to progress? Lmao just having fun, you the man Keith!!
Remember the episode of The Office where Jim and Karen call David Wallace about interviewing for the corporate job and Karen says she'd like to interview in well?
Ha!
Hey that overlap tip for smaller patches is a good one.
I'll put that to use.
Lucky, I have not run into the poop issue. Depending on severity, my thought is I'm just not going to deal with it.
I understand the "motivational" aspect of the Fees, but as noted in this case, pffft....I'll pay it and You clean up after me and my dog.
I want to show up; trim, mow, blow and get on.
One of the aspects of pet ownership is responsibility.
And you, customer, are failing at that.
Says a little bit about the customers integrity.
Yoo Brian what length do you mow at?
3-3.25”
I change up every two weeks
Is getting all your mowers mowing the same height an issue?
100%! Every mower is different for the most part.
I have a question about mowing my corner lot which has a concrete curb all the way around it. I have a lawn tractor now but getting a Zero turn next week. I've been mowing the perimeter of my lawn around the curb with one side of my mower on the low part of the curb and the other on the high side. This enables me to cut the grass closer right next to the curb. If I don't do this and let the tires ride along the top of the curb the grass next to the curb is left too long. Do you do this as well or what is your best practice with curbs? I hope my question makes sense.
big john , thank you
