  • Amateur video production with exceptional musicians balances out to an entertaining 1/2 hour of top shelf Jazz. The concept of "Jazz West" was to create a TV program that delivered the best west coast jazz players in an informal club type setting while getting to know them with brief interviews mixed in with their performances. It was conceived and produced by Otto Svoboda and directed by Joe Chess for a CSUN TV 240 production class taught by Tom Burrows. This program would of never materialized if it wasn't for the tremendous help and support of the "Voice of Jazz" himself, Bob Summers. Also, Mundell and his quintet are amazing players and great guys for participating in this program. And this would of never been posted on CZcams if it weren't for friend and colleague Jimmy Velarde (who was a cameraman on this gig). It was shot in the 80's at Valley Production Studios in Van Nuys with great support from Franky Bronell and the Lumbleau Real Estate Schools.

I am a drummer and drumming instructor. Nick Ceroli was a tremendous drummer. He had one of the cleanest, crispest techniques of anyone. Listen to his snare and his hi hat "after beats" on 2 and 4 here. Also, I suggest you enjoy his precise playing on The Ray Anthony Show on TV from around 1963. What a player! He held that band down so wonderfully and kicked it. That was about 2 years before he became a member of Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass.

Nick is absolutely the world’s greatest most sensitive and most musically synchronized drummer in the world. We lost a national treasure on August 11th 1985😔

In the introduction, Otto Svoboda wrote...
"The concept of 'Jazz West' was to create a TV program that delivered the best west coast jazz players in an informal club type setting while getting to know them with brief interviews mixed in with their performances."
That was the same concept "Jazz Central" used, when it aired on BET in the 90's. I had several video tapes of that show with various performers and it was always in that type of setting.
    Great format. Very enjoyable.
Thanks for posting this Otto Svoboda.

Great set, amazing the stuff that was going on in little pockets around So Cal. I just heard a Mundell tune on KCSM and went in search of more. Noticed you mentioned CSUN above and it made me think of a couple guys you might like if you're not familiar out of UCI Masters Music Program named the Mattson Duo or 2. Not promoting, just a fan, and thinking like this set, if you can sort the wheat from the chaff there are still neat things in a similar vein going down these many years later.
