How many tilapia can you grow per 100 gallons

Is cement porous enough to use instead of lava rock

I wouldn't think so. Lava rock has lots of air space on the inside. If you had identical sized pieces of Lava rock and cement I think the Lava rock would be much lighter.

Just about anything can be used to grow beneficial bacteria. The pores allow for more surface area & less weight. It's also useful to know that different beneficial bacteria grow on different types of material.
Sorry to hear about the catfish.

Learned so much. A few questions?
1-Can an above ground pool with the pool liner be used for growing fish?
2- Can this be set up outside with a small covering as I here tilapia prefer the warmer water or would it get too hot?
      Thank you

Yes I am using a pool for my larger pond. Pools however have some vulnerabilities. They really need protection from puncturing on the sides AND the bottom. Roots, sticks, stones, and whatever else must be removed from underneath and it is advised to place down some protective barrier underneath. Some foam insulation boards would suffice.
You probably will be fine without a cover as long as you have some floating plants to provide shade and shelter. If not then some shade cloth will probably work fine but the plants would be optimal. It also depends on the size. A larger pool will stay cooler. You could also do both, shade cloth and plants if you feel it's necessary. Yes tilapia do like it quite warm.
Also, you probably do not want to put it under any trees that will drop limbs, leaf litter, seeds, or fruits into the pond.

@@milagrosripski7679 you can also use a pond liner. That's what I'm going to use when I build a bigger tank.
