The guy is an actual aviator, too, and filthy rich - so he may actually be doing some of his own flying in the film. Wouldn't put it past the guy. After all, how can you not like a guy who owns and flies his own P-51 Mustang? Even if you are turning green with envy!

I thought the same thing after his last Mission Impossible movie. It's not that he looks"old", he just doesn't have that youthful look that most of us lose as we age.

I'd like to clear up something about Maverick's jacket since many people were annoyed that Taiwan and Japan flags were removed from the patch on his jacket: It looks like in the original movie, the patch is his father's from his Vietnam tour while the second patch is his own. The second say 85-86, when the original came out, and says Indian Ocean Cruise, where the dogfights at the end of the original happened.
Defintely not flying that jet himself. He and the other actors, were filmed in the back seat of an F/A-18F Super Hornet, using four 6k cameras. He was trained how to act and move in the cockpit, by Navy pilots. So the footage and his mannerisms sell the illusion that he is really flying.

Oh I didn't know that. I thought he took over a year to train, so he could do the flying his self. Well, they did a good job of making it look like he was flying by his self, cause I don't see anybody else in that cockpit with him. I appreciate the Knowledge. :-)

He was taught how a fighter pilot moves in the cockpit...where to look, mannerisms, but in order to safely fly the Super Hornet like in the trailer, takes about a year in the training squadron, and at least another year, in an operational squadron. But, the way he was filmed, he sure sells it.
Not sure if the sequel will be better than the original knowing the past few years I’ve seen 80s movies that had terrible remakes/sequels. But with this one I don’t care. This brings back that heavenly 80s nostalgia. My parents saw Top Gun on their honeymoon when it originally came out in theaters. Still married and best friends to this day. And who else thought of Berlin? lol

They used the San Diego museums Tomcat in at least one scene filmed on an active carrier tangled in a barrier, so yeah, a Tomcat will be on the film.

Finally realized when Maverick is talking to the Admiral, he's wearing a U-2 Spy plane "astronaut" style suit - can tell by the neck ring/collar
And also 1:28 with the helmet, looks to be similar in type to U2 pilots. U2 is USAF though, so that's interesting.
