I took Ebert's word and went to see The Rock. I wasn't disappointed at all.
The Rock is Michael Bay's best film . Ebert is right it is cobbled together from other movies , but it's executed very well and it's very entertaining .

The Phantom is an underrated film, released a few years before superhero films really took off. Had it been released a decade later, it would have done much better. The set design is very good. The same goes for The Shadow, which is an even more enjoyable film
I may have to revisit The Phantom. We saw it in a second run theater and half the movie was out of focus on a projector.
Forget Never Say Never Again, The Rock features Sean Connery's final performance as James Bond.

Rhode Island native, got a kick out of it. When this aired I was 10, hoping to see Independence Day in early July as I eventually did. Never as pumped to see a movie in the theaters.
The Rock was a good one, later saw on video.

The Rock is one of my 5 favorite action movies of the 90s and I love Connery/Cage together. However, I appreciate Siskel sticking to a 50/50 review being thumbs down. I don't agree with his take on The Rock, but I get where he's coming from.
I just watched Life Itself, the documentary about Roger Ebert and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's available to watch on CZcams for free but if you say you watched it someplace that's not CZcams they'll delete your comment so I can't say where else I watched it.
The Rock - marred only by typical erratic editing from Michael Bay and of course the plot is preposterous, but the action is crisp, Connery and Cage are good, but I save my highest praise for Ed Harris. He creates a compelling villain. He’s not an evil man and he knows what he’s doing is wrong, but he genuinely feels betrayed. My favorite shot (which is probably the most iconic from the movie) is the green smoke scene. Cage waving those flares is such a simple thing but there’s genuine excitement there. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏾.
The Phantom - this was cut from the same cloth as The Shadow, The Rocketeer, and Dick Tracy being an adaptation of 1930s pulp comic books. This film feels curiously abbreviated. Its 100 minute running time is proof positive. I liked what I got but I wanted more. The Kit Walker/Diana Palmer romance is stunted. Treat Williams is a fine villain but his plan is pretty standard. The three mythical skulls are ridiculous and the final climax doesn’t work with the reveal of a fourth skull. I liked Billy Zane because he had fun with a seemingly frivolous hero. I got used to the purple suit. Siskel is a little rough here. Prior to the Phantom, the only movie hero I hated was Kevin Costner’s Mariner in Waterworld because he’s so hateful. I’m mixed here but I would have endorsed a sequel to expand the characters’ development. ⭐️⭐️ 1/2 👎🏾.

Wtf The Rock Rules
The Rock is an incredibly stupid action movie. If all you want is to turn off your mind and eat popcorn, then you're set. If you want anything more at all from the plot (including plausibility), you won't find it here. It's every cliché done poorly with some slick action, good performances, and a grand total of _one_ surprise -- one moment in the entire film that was not utterly predictable. Unlike Roger, I hated it. Unlike Gene, I wasn't worn out or entertained -- I was bored. It astounds me that this movie has been so popular through the years. To me, it's everything wrong with '90s action films.
You think this is implausible, play the Metal Gear games!
