Driving in Israel 2009: Nazareth Illit to Be'er Sheva via Highway 6

- First, a technical note about the video. This is a standard definition (SD) video that was upscaled to high definition (HD). This is my first attempt (together with the other Israel 2009 video I uploaded) at experimenting with different rendering options. The width of the video was slightly stretched to fill the 16:9 aspect ratio nicely, but I think the quality degradation was not significant.
This is the second (and final) in a pair of driving videos I made during my recent trip to Israel, in May 2009.
This is a video of driving from my hometown Nazareth Illit, a mountain town of about 43,000 inhabitants located above the ancient city of Nazareth, to Be'er Sheva, a relatively big city (in Israeli standards) of just under 200,000 inhabitants, located at the northern edge of the Negev desert. It is Israel's biggest desert city. This particular video turned out very well (I think), so hopefully you enjoy it more than the first video of my trip, which I admit is a bit too dark in several sections.
The total length of the drive is about 200 km (124 miles), and took about 2 hours via the new toll Highway 6 (more on it follows), with a moderate amount of speeding (maintaining about 130 km/h in a 110 km/h zone). Due to CZcams's 10-minute limitation on the length of videos, I had to speed this video more than most of my other videos. It is sped up about 14 times.
The video begins with a brief drive inside Nazareth Illit, followed by a road with a recently-constructed tunnel, which bypasses the older longer and more dangerous (i.e. serpentine) alternatives. After a drive on some highways in Northern Israel, we reach Highway 6 (also known as the Trans-Israel Highway), which comprises the bulk of our drive.
Highway 6 is a relatively new highway, which bypasses the older congested north-south freeways in the central regions of Israel. The highway is an electronic tollway, which uses a system of cameras that photograph a vehicle's license plate (or optionally a transponder available upon subscribing) instead of toll booths. The system was designed after Toronto's Highway 407, which uses a similar (but older generation) system. The highway is still under construction, and extensions at its ends are in various stages of planning and approval (at the time of this writing). Expansion of the highway to 3 lanes per direction in certain sections is also underway. The speed limit on the highway is 110 km/h (higher than the typical 100 or 90 on other Israeli freeways). At the time of the making of this video, driving the whole highway one-way cost about $7. Taking Highway 6 to the central regions of Israel is often not worth it, but taking it all the way to the Negev desert does cut travel times significantly.
After a relatively long drive the landscape slowly changes to be more desert-like. Eventually, Highway 6 ends and seemlessly turns into Highway 40, which is an at-grade expressway much like the rest of Israel's trunk highway system. Finally, we arrive in Be'er Sheva in the northern Negev desert.

Beautiful Israel, love this country with all my heart! Wanna visit it one day for sure! Regards from Serbia :)
omg this video mede me cry. I must really miss Israel!
Great video and soundtrack, Israel is indeed a beatiful country, I wish someday i could go up there an make a road trip myself !!!
my best regards, Carlos from Brazil !!!
I don't know if you were joking/sarcastic in your post, but aswchris referred to the yellow before green, not red.
In any case, yes, the phase sequence in Israel is the same as in Germany and some other countries like the UK, which is probably the reason for it in the first place (the first traffic lights were probably constructed during the British Mandate).
Another interesting thing in Israel is that on high-speed roads, the green light blinks before turning yellow, which is quite useful.
Your videos are GREAT!! Thanks a lot for such a fun!
greatings from serbia
Be'er Sheva, my city! I live here close to the city entrance.
I wish one day I'll be visiting Israel.. my dream... Love the video !!!
Highway 6 is a godsend
Long live, my sweet blessed city of Nazareth, my Home my all where Jesus lived with Holy Mary and St Joseph. Haifa is where I lived fro almost seven years, and Jerusalem. Blessed is the Name of the Holy Family of Nazareth! Fiat! Amen!
my name is max and im proud i live in nazareth illit its kinda peaceful here
Awesome video. Thanx for posting.
Its amazing how incredibly similar Israel's freeways look to our Interstates in America. Highway 6 looks literally like something out of California.
great video,i drove down here on a trip from hadera to eilat.
back at the days of the bible (which im no expert since im an atheist) i must say this place was more greener and more humid than today. Though today we have Somewhat Israeli version of extreme cold (around -5 to 6 at winter seasons)
The speed limit on Route 6 is 110 km/h. Late last year the government expressed the intention to raise it to 120 km/h, but in order to do that, the law must be changed to raise the default freeway speed limit, which is currently also 110 km/h. I suppose most freeways look somewhat similar, except that here in Ontario the colours of the lines are reversed compared to Israel :)
A lot changed since this video.. It is now 120 km/h, and widened to 3 lanes in most sections, some 4 lanes. Also extended north and south.
Great video though :-)
@@mastertheknife Haha yeah I know, I've been to Israel several times since I made this video (last time in 2019).
Unfortunately I no longer make these videos, but thankfully there are many Israeli driving channels out there now that are much better than mine :)
I have to say, the pace of road construction in Israel is impressive - every time I visit there are many improvements. Like you said, Highway 6 is now much longer and it is even faster to access it from Nazareth Illit (now Nof Hagalil) from the north side past the tunnels near Yokneam.
The speed limit increases are also very welcome, especially since studies show that higher limits often end up reducing accidents, which is something many (including where I live in Canada) don't understand.
בכל מקרה, תודה על הצפייה, תמיד מפתיע אותי שיש עוד אנשים שצופים בסרטונים האלה חחח
Nice video. One day I'll be there and drive the same route ))
very good!
THANK YOU BRO
Cool video.
Driving in Israel is kinda scary, though.
Nice love it ♥ !!
@MrJapaneseboy1111 Looks like it. It's in the middle of the roundabout - probably some old relic for decoration.
ken ken yisrael is so beautiful :)
I travel this road (specifically from Nazareth to Be'er sheva every saturday, and from be'er sheva to nazareth every thursday), I wish the time was like this, 10 mins.
2 hours 15 mins :(
I presume it has to do with lack of funds and/or insufficient traffic levels. In general, though, road construction is an ongoing non-stop process in Israel, with many 2-lane sections being converted to dual-carriageways and then, in turn, many traffic lights on these dual-carriageways converted to interchanges. For this reason, the number of roads in Israel classified as true motorways is not so high at the moment, but many non-motorway roads provide a very motorway-like driving experience.
Israel's highways are almost like the Trans Canada Highway as Canada's national highway is well known for having intersection exits in addition to overpasses and underpasses.
Yes, It's a monument
Only that time we made a U-turn, we just missed a right turn because streets are signed in a slightly confusing way. Otherwise, I don't think we were making circles. We more or less followed Google Maps instructions :)
Am Yisrael Chai!!! Love from Amsterdam!
long live israel and all holy places for the sciences studies in the future
@moorad1988 As the video description says, all of the songs in this video are by Ace of Base :) Thanks for watching.
A tad too fast ;)
I don't like all those traffic lights on highways 60 and 65...
Nice to see some Israel :)
long live israel love driving there they drive alot quicker then israel and no pointless speed cameras everywhere
Heh I had enough trouble figuring out some of the road numbers (especially in my other video from the same trip). I wish I had the time :) But I do plan to include more annotations in my upcoming videos of Canada.
Toda
What about adding subtitles giving the major junctions, so when we go next we don't get lost like you did.
very cool - thanks
like the sounds -real driving beat
we were over there last month- had a super time from Golan to Eilat
God Bless Israel and all their crazy lovable people!!!

@MrJapaneseboy1111 Most of the mountains are in the north (where the video starts and even north of that). The desert also has height extremes, but Highway 6 mainly passes through relatively flat areas (especially the centre of the country), although the gradual height changes and the many bridges and several tunnels give an illusion of flatness. Parts of the city in the beginning of the video are about 600m above sea level.
Why are you doing so fast? this is horrible !! you could kill someone !! :-)
Nice shooting buddy, loved the video.
I have relatives there :)
Thanks fore sharing the view of awesome highways
But if it was be able to see using VR glasses would be freaky because , not cause velocity , but the overtakings 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 😱
I imagine the passengers 😂😂😂😂😂😂
The driver is really good driver but who sees outside get really freaked because it’s like Woody Woodypecker driving 😂😂😂
Congratulations for the video and the driving ability
Very best regards
Cibele Mehmood this is very close to Nazareth where jesus grew up and many Jews in Israel are now believers.
I noticed many people having breakdowns in the last few minutes (Highway 40). Also, the traffic lights are popping yellow first before turning green, which is very German to me :)
can u please tell me who sings It's a wonderful life in this video???
Nazareth looks like Hollywood, highway 6 looks like route 20 from the Mother Lode to Fort Bragg, and some parts of Be'er Sheva sort of looks like part of Sacramento. I do notice there has not been a whole lot of development in the state of Israel, were here in California there are so many ugly building crushing us in. I think I'll move to Israel. But I can do the heat. Interesting video though.
@Kot1234 did you use gps maps
The road looks like the QEW and 401 in the countrified areas of Ontario, Canada.
What's the speed limit on your Route 6? 100 km/h or something? Looks like they're moving at a real good clip, bro'...
I wonder why there are so many traffic lights on the highways considering they are near-freeway standard.
@aswchris They're British to me. LOL. Oh well... I love those lights more than the American-styled ones.
@tal13579 לא, בכבישים הלא מהירים לא עברנו את ה100, אבל בכביש 6 נסענו בערך 130 קמ"ש בהרבה מהחלקים.
ive lived in LA for 3 years. and is it just me or is just like driving through the valley?!?!?
Actually, by law, only on roads where the speed limit is at least 60 km/h, though it's implemented on a wider scale.
@savtasaba תודה. בקרוב אצלם עוד סירטונים בסיגנון עם המצלמה החדשה שלי, אבל הם יהיו בקנדה (בסביבת טורונטו), לפחות עד הביקור הבא בישראל :)
@Kot1234 your israeli?
Oh you live in nahalbeka? I live in Dalet :P
FUCKIN AWESOME...
I SO BAD WANNA GO TO ISRAEL
9:45 is this a fucking TANK in the middel of the road?!!
@MrJapaneseboy1111 It's just a decoration... Me and my friends tried to get in there but it closed from inside...
@MediaWontShow Indeed, war is a biatch...
@fatima51101 Nope. Just Google Maps with some prior planning.
למי בדיוק נועדה ההערה שלך?
what you did in Be'er Sheva???
there is nothing to do there...
I know, i live there
ok. i understand. Though i didn't mean anything offensive or "Fuel hatred". Must be i misread your old comment i the most not accurate way. mostly because of bad grammar. Sorry :/.
road 6 south in 10 minutes
please is this the same small town JESUS CHRIST was born? over 2000 years ago?
No Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, was born in Nazareth.
Didn't have one.
and im israeli אז תבואו לבקר
It's not that bad, trust me. Haha.
@RickDC1 lol it isnt peaceful near nazareth i can tell u that much
unrwa use 2nd song for a commercial to gaza children
בקרוב יפתך מסעדת "אסדו אל צ'ה" בהר יונה!!!!!!
you don't have to be jewish to become an israeli cevillian! it's just the easist and quicest way, but it is defenetly not the only one. i have a christian neighboor..! plus, by the jeish belif, if your mother's mother was jewish, she was jewish, because religoun is set by the mother, therefor you are considered by our law as jewish..
its all flat !
looks like holand !
@kimprofuze You find living near Nazareth peaceful? Ew. I hate that city and the people there aren't THAT friendly compared to let's say, Jaljulya, Sakhnin, Tuva-Sangaria and Dalyat el Karmel.
lol israel is located in the middle of its enemys xD
