My grandfather got me into gaming back in the 80s (I’m 42). He played games literally until he died ( played Mario Galaxy the day before his death at 89 years old). Never let anyone tell you that you’re too old for your hobbies.

54 year old gamer, here. I started in the late 70s and never stopped. I was there in the arcades of the early 80s, for all of the home consoles and computers of the 80s, 90s, and beyond, made my own games in the 80s, hung out in arcades and video game shops during the 90s (in my 20s), and just kept on.
Now, I am into emulation, making my own video game consoles, and making my own games (retro evolved; 80s arcade games with modern technology).
I even mixed gaming and social life, including running Ridge Racer tournaments with two linked PlayStations at events which had lines out the door.
I have no regrets.
Yes brother, you enjoyed the best gaming years. I am almost 42 and I started from Atari as which was before my time but the first games I ever played were pong and River Raid.

Man I’m 30 and there’s games that came out before 1993 and just around after that are way better than many newer games. I’d say upto 2010 ish are good after that they got way to open world and boring to an extent. Of course there are exceptions id say many Nintendo games that are even recent years stood consistent in quality while PlayStation and Xbox games were both better before.

Great to see brother. 43, but time flies now. What type of games do you enjoy? Did you ever notice a deterioration in reflexes? I cant really say I have, yet, but I think we get better at anticipating things in advance to even it out.
I recently turned 41 and am still into gaming just as much as I was when my age was in single digits and Iv no intention of changing 😃

Our generation has the huge benefit of having experienced first hand the evolution of video games, its a beautiful thing, no regrets, i'll never stop playing.
videogames, movies, technology, from msdos to alexa from atari to oculus, from analog signal to 4k and so much more, even toys are so details this days that the trend is call them collectibles

Probably the generation with the most cohesive first hand understanding of games, I'm 22 so unless I really dedicate myself to retro games and playing them in the most authentic way possible, my understanding of the medium's history and culture can only go so far, it's a lucky position to be in for sure

When I was 14 years old I got a ZX Spectrum 48K for my birthday, best present ever, 55 years old now and still gaming. Whenever I feel a bit down on gaming I watch HCG and his pure enthusiasm relights that fire.

Well, don't be so surprised you are still gaming. I am 61 yrs old (and female) and still a gamer. Started out with Nintendo in the 80s, played all Phantasy Star, Y's, Final Fantasy. Now into all the latest, of course. It doesn't have to end, lol. I don't plan to quit despite teasing from my non-gamer husband. Be proud of your interests and passion! Game on!

Dude fellow Gen Xer...51 myself and have been gaming since Atari 2600 days..first pc was a Commodore 64. We are the first gamer generation and will likely have consoles and gaming pcs in our retirement homes. I remember staying over at a friends house who had an Atari 2600 and playing Barnstormer and Adventure the whole night. My first RPGs like Phantasie/Wizards Crown/Bards's Tale/Might and Magic, Ultima Series...I got to see them evolve over time..2d graphics into 3d into multi gigabyte/terrabyte games from games that took just a few kb.
I played the first arcade games including my first ever Battlezone which to this day I love. Gamer 4 life :)
Right there with you. I’m 51 with almost the same exact experiences except I had an Apple IIe instead of Commodore 64. I Loved Battlezone in the arcade too!
@@IMDLEGEND That is awesome...so cool that our generation can wear our hobbies on our sleeves unlike our baby boomer parents. I had an uncle who was into train sets...he would wait till everyone was asleep...put on his conductor hat and go into the basement and run his trains.

Im turning 59 next week and I remember when game rooms where mostly pinball and mechanical games. It's been fun watching the introduction to video games and how they have advanced over the years. I have great memories of going to game rooms in the mall in high school playing Astroids, Donkey Kong, Star Castles, etc. Knowing what the world was like before and after video games has been very interesting and something I am grateful to have experienced.
Jhonny, I remember that 40 year old gamer episode. I was working at an old job at night watching you to pass the time . Saying back, u was not old at 40. So let the good times roll . I'm turning 38 this tuesday an i'm still very much enjoying video games. When i was about 17, my father told me that playing video games, was something children did and very much tried to make me quit video games and it visibly frustrated him, that he couldn't kill my passion

Gotta love the never ending shortage of people who continue to belittle and trash video games. Those same exact people also continue to spend hours in front of the TV watching sports, the news, movies, CZcams podcasts(etc), while hammering away on their smart phones sifting through social media apps and whatever else. lol Sitting on their A**es staring at a screen and pressing buttons...Ya, sounds pretty familiar to me. ;)
I mean seriously, why can't these goober heads acknowledge that movies, watching sports, TV, video games(etc) are all forms of entertainment that are meant to be enjoyed. Anybody who acts like what they're doing is better than the next guy, hobby wise, needs to get over themselves. people love what they love, putting down other peoples hobbies, imo, is just straight up lame and childish. It's like pissing on somebodies garden.
I feel 38 years olds are huge gamers because we we're just old enough to experience everything in terms of the gaming progression from '80s into now

He's too old now. Its not that he's too old, its that the audience is now older too and their time is consumed with other things. Its how getting old worlds out.
Yes its cool Johnny is still into the same things as when he was young. More and more as time goes by the same generation can not hold onto younger things.
There's no new subs coming, if anything in time the subs themselves currently will start dying off.

Loved this video. I turn 60 this year and came to gaming very late but, like Britta F4D, it really amazed me that I had missed these incredible things. While I don't see my self getting into CZcams as a creator (at least not in front of the camera) I adore your channel, Britta's and all the great creators of my generation. And, despite some odd looks I get especially from younger friends weirdly enough, as you so passionately put, I don't have to give up games and I won't. We're not addicts, we're not living in the past, we're involved (even if it's as a consumer in my case) in an incredible field where dreams can be actively participated in. No one needs to be ashamed of that. Keep it up, great work (and it is real work, despite what some might think). Thanks and all the best in the new year.
I'll be turning 60 this year too and I agree to everything you've just said. Late 2022 I only just got myself a high spec PC after years of being a console gamer. Still got some of them because I have enjoyed it since the late 70s.
Another 1964 baby here. So happy and proud to say I have seen everything from the start and don't have to ask anyone about games.

This hits close to home. I'm going to be 44 soon and remember when I was 13 my parents did the same. Tried to get me to "move on" from gaming. I'm glad I decided otherwise, as it's what me and my 9 year old have bonded over. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Been gaming since 1975. I’m 55 and probably game as much or more as when I was younger. The VR2 on PS5 has renewed my love for games. So many great games to get lost in. Keep going brother . We’ve seen it all and are lucky to have done so.

Looking forward to the 60 year old gamer episode. I started watching at 13 and I'm now 27. I remember trying to find videos on Mega man X and ended up watching RobMan on your channel and subscribing. I went back and watched every video on your channel and have been steady ever since. You will forever be my comfort food Johnny.

Entering my mid 30s and even my generation has the view videogames are for a certain age demographic. Some of the best stories and worlds are in this medium that I love, and that’s why I will never stop playing!

I am also 50 and i exactly feel the same. My first gaming experience was the Atari 2600 in the early 80s and then C64 to Amiga and then my first PC a 386DX40 to play Wing Commander 1. It will never end. Especially since they bring out all the retro consoles so i can replay the games of my youth and and also all the Nintendo and SEGA console stuff i never played before because they were "beneath" me as a PC gamer in the 90s.😀

Love you Johnny, I turn 50 in 2 days as well and I have a gameroom/toy room and I still collect retro video games and toys like Transformers, He-Man, Go Bots, etc. I have a long white beard 14 inches like Gandolf braided all white and a hairstyle just like yours and I'm very happy with my hobby. Still listen to my high school jams like Misfits, Slayer, etc. TO THIS DAY.... lol and I'm proud. My kids are now in their late 20's and they get me Zelda books, toys and related stuff and it's so cool. Back in the day I was told to grow up and I did and sold all my toys and video games but years later I realized I missed it and wanted my stuff back and that's when I discovered your channel, AVGN, Game Chasers, Pat the NES Punk, and realized I'm not alone with us being the same age still wanting to have some fun and enjoying it. So hell yeah!!! I'm so happy. I remember your 40 year old video and was like...damn we're both Capricorns and the same age only days apart. I totally agree mate. I am a 65 yo video gamer since my teens in the 1970's and have a large gaming collection playing all consoles and PC as does my wife and my sons. I have been blessed to truly see the full evolution of gaming since its humble beginnings and my wife and kids supporting this passion. Everything you have said I can relate to. Gaming in 2024 just keeps getting better. Don't ever give up your passion. My favourite game of all time is the Bioshock franchise. But I have so many favourites. Cheers from Australia

I love this channel so much because Johhny is not only such a positive energy, but he speaks for my generation who love video games, but were age shamed to grow out of them. You know, you were one of the first CZcamsrs I've ever watched before (I'm relatively young, only 24, I started watching CZcams in like 2013) and I remember when you made your 40 Year Old Gamer video. I can't believe I've been watching you this long and here's to another 10 years! I don't comment that often, but you really are one of my favorite CZcamsrs and have greatly inspired me in my love for games and making my own videos on here too. I found your channel in mid to late 2013, it's so crazy to fathom it's been a little over 10 years since then. Absolutely love your work, Johnny, your enthusiasm for games is not unlike mine you've always been an inspiration to me with your humor and positive attitude.
I almost teared up watching this because i love your attitude and i feel the exact same way as you. It's amazing to hear someone 10 years older than me say what you've said, literally everything is exactly how I feel. It's weird how video games have been my one passion that's actually gotten stronger over the years and I definitely don't plan to ever stop. They really do keep getting more amazing and i love having been there since the 8bit days. Remember, no time is wasted if you're enjoying yourself.

I'm turning 40 this year, and I still love video games. I also love modern games. I started with the NES around 89, and while I feel the nostalgia of old games, the new games are soo amazing. Way better than me and my friends could ever imagine back then...and yes, time really do fly. The older we get, the faster time accelerates. Videogames are an amazing part of our culture.

Happy birthday! Time does go by fast! I am in my late 60s and just started gaming last year. I'm retired now and wanted to take up something new. I briefly played some Nintendo games in the 90s, but that was it. Gaming has come a long way over the years, which is really exciting. Starting from scratch now has been more challenging than I thought. Just learning to memorize controller functions is something I thought would be easy. But I feel all is good because it helps with cognition and reflexes. So, keep it going because everything helps as we age. I have found that CZcams has been great in not only game previews but also gameplay. It has helped a newbie like me.
You are an absolute legend, man.

I still remember if it was yesterday when I use to play Atari Games and Arcade Games in the 1980's, I still miss the good old days but I happy to see technology advancing in Video Games on PC, Consoles and VR Headsets.
Happy Birthday! 💯 Loved the Best Games of 2023. I got a voice acting background and have to say that Yuri Lowenthal's voice has been such an inspiration for me since the Prince of Persia Trilogy. His performance in Spidey 2 is amazing. The vocal training was really tough, sometimes without noticeable results for months but actors like him and the late Kevin Conroy are a great impulse to not give up. You almost saw me as Leon in those new RE games :)

I'm 3 years behind you, so i grew up in kinda like the same era of gaming. Me and my older brother's _(who by the way also a frequent viewer of your videos)_ first game "console" was a videopac G7000. In hindsight of course a horrible computer, but back then it was the coolest thing ever! So yeah, i was also always a gamer and probably always will be, even when i'll be 80 years old.
