2019 Acura MDX vs Lexus RX Comparison: Which Luxury Crossover Does a Better Job?

  • The Acura MDX and Lexus RX are two of the OG luxury crossovers. The MDX debuted in 2001 and the RX just a few years earlier in 1999. They're mainstays in the hotly contested segment and have been kicking it before crossovers were cool. Both crossovers have become well known for offering stellar reliability and the soft, cushy comfort that luxury shoppers are looking for. Both CUVs are available as regular gas-powered models and hybrid versions, and although the MDX comes standard with a third row, the RX is now available in a long-wheelbase version that also offers an additional row of seats, so the two are even closer than ever.
Last year, the MDX sold 54,886 units in North America but the RX sold almost 118,000, which is a huge difference. Does the Lexus deserve to outsell the Acura by that much? We brought both CUVs together to find out.

It's definitely a good idea to consider either and it's a tough choice really. Both the Acura MDX and the Lexus RX are great luxury crossovers that are very comfortable and great to drive. If you want more confort and quietness, the Lexus RX is the one for you, since that's the goal for Lexus products, isolating you from the real world. You'll still get that in the Acura MDX, but you can also drive it more aggressively and it's a lot more fun to drive. Plus, I think the tech is much more easy to use in the MDX, and it's very simplistic for anyone to get in and learn within minutes, whereas with the Lexus infortainment..... yeah, it's easy to see why you wanna just break the screen off of the car xD Either vehicle is a win for me though, but for me, I'd choose the MDX for more practicality and I just love Acura vehicles in general (even though some of their interiors may not be the best), and Acura and parent company Honda are pretty conservative with a lot of things, but I don't mind it.

I like the dashboard of the Lexus better, but I prefer the MDX in most other aspects, especially in A-Spec trim. The Lexus looks nice from most angles, except the front, which looks like Darth Vader. So I would pick the MDX in A-Spec trim.

I think most would be happy with either vehicles. Quality stuff from both brands. I recently compared the MDX and RX350 for purchase(amongst others). The RX rides better because of its more upscale interior, but the MDX drives so much better and has more interior space. I ultimately went with the Acura, but I would have been happy with the Lexus as well. Good luck to all those making the same comparison and buying decision.

First off, you guys wrongly evaluated the MDX and Acura as a whole. You guys kept comparing it to a Honda Pilot, which I'm sure it's based on in some capacity, however you stated that the outside gave you pilot vibes, which it DEFINITELY does not. I don't know if you've seen a Pilot, but it definitely isn't similar to the MDX. The inside of the MDX is much nicer than a pilot, and yes the MDX is due for a full refresh, the interior is still very nice and nothing like the Pilot's. They're not even the same size or platform! I feel like you both played into the stereotype or persona of a Lexus. A Lexus is a very nice car, but I feel that your verdict was solely because it was a Lexus. You didn't even talk about SH-AWD, the hybrid system on the MDX, A-Spec or really anything. For goodness sakes, your title is "Which luxury crossover does a better job?" Which you both agreed it was Acura. The Acura drove better, sounded better, had more space, and better useable features. If you weren't going to have the 3 row RX, you should have brought the RDX, which would have definitely handled this RX. Overall I feel the comparison was unfair and slated. Reviews and comparisons are subjective, but to just say the Lexus won, because when you pull up in a Lexus people notice? People notice Acuras too, more and more since their refreshed styling and new designs. As car reviewers, you all have the power to give Acura and other brands like it, the recognition it needs, and the people honest, unbiased opinions. Very disappointed in this review.

Most of the criticism in the driving dynamics of the RX is due to its F-sport package which comes with the 20" rims. a slightly stiffer suspension and add the Hybrid on top of that. Some fact checks:
    1. The Lexus RX-L in most markets will sticker for less than the RX F-Sport Hyrbid you are testing. So, stating that the RX-L would be "much more expensive" than an MDX is simply false.
    2. You can change a radio with the simple switch of a button on the steering wheel. You can also customize the remote touch control to be less "jumpy" and you can silence the "ding" sound if you find it annoying all in the setup portion of the vehicle.
    3. For SAFETY reasons, you cannot enter an address manually while the car is moving. You can only use voice commands while the car is in motion.

I own a 2018 Lexus RX with same infotainment system and for most of its use, it’s not bad once you get used to it. But I will agree with the reviewers that having to type in addresses for navigation is pretty awful. But the voice recognition for adding full addresses works well, and that’s m only method of entering an address. Lexus is using a larger track pad on their 2019 ES, LS, NX, models which is infinitely better than the RX current mouse. Still not as good as others, but better than their current mouse.

....to me as a person that uses plenty of electronic devices, I have never found any of the Lexus systems to be difficult to use...there are steering wheel buttons to control everything so it always makes me cringe when they complain about the joystick. Not to mention they always make it seem like the UI and its controls are like such a major component on a vehicle when virtually everyone only uses it for music, text message readouts & navigation...and unless you're a pizza delivery driver or have a horrendous memory, how often are you really using the navigation..? They always love to trash on the Lexus UI and call BMW and Mercedes input methods amazing but I always fail to see what one needs to be controlling with these "amazing UIs" while you're supposed to be driving...cars, especially luxury ones, have become so inundated with stupid shit that have nothing to do with driving on top of people expecting to be spoonfed everything. I hate hearing about headunit systems on cars, they take up so much in car reviews when in reality they ALL suck anyways compared to my smart phone and computer...

Living for 4 years with a MDX I have to say that its mostly a good car, but some of the quality issues are to consider. I have no clue about Lexus' quality because it's not sold in Mexico, but now I wonder why. Anyways, I can confirm that the driving dynamics with the SH-AWD are really good tho. But it feels like it needs a new generation asap, but we'll have to wait another year.

I have had several Acura's I presently have a MDX. the dealer service and support from Acura has gone to He**, almost non existent compared to what it once was, year ago. No more Acura's for me because of this. Findlay Acura of Las Vegas is a total joke. When I bought my Acura they gave me several free oil changes and when I went to use them Findlay would not honer them. Told me some employees had stolen some and they won't honor them, this comes after making a service appointment with them for the oil change Needless to say, I left and have never been back, after being refused to be able to talk to the manger. They covered for him, said he was busy to see me and in a meeting. yeah right! I wrote Acura Corp and told them of my experience they refereed me back to the dealer and I have never heard from either one to this day. I took new deliver of one at Jody Wilkinson in SLC they left the car so it would get hard water makes from there sprinkler system on my Black MDX when I went to pick it up. they said I will have the wash boy take care of it and he scratch the He** out of brand new car and had to send it our to be buffed only to return it with swirl marks from the buffer. like I say No competent service and support from Acura. Byers be ware.

Aside from the MDX having more space than the RX, the Lexus just looks so much more modern than the Acura even the Lexus was redesigned just two years after the MDX. I'm a Honda person, but I would definitely the Rx over the MDX. The Acura needs a redesign as the RDX had.

I own a 2012 TL and 2012 MDX...both bought new. Still own and drive them. I've been a loyal Honda customer since my 1988 Accord. I've influenced family members to buy Honda. But after the 2012 MDX...
I WILL NEVER BUY A HONDA PRODUCT AGAIN.
Honda motors tells me that my 2012 MDX is within manufacturing specifications to burn 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles. They manufactured the engines with a defect and now, instead of standing behind their products, have invented specifications that they call "acceptable" to turn their back on the customer.
I paid $48000 for a vehicle that began to burn oil at the 60000 mile mark. Every service has been done by Acura dealerships. I've had the complaint checked multiple times. There's now a recall. Guess what? Honda/Acura still refuses to admit that my vehicle has a manufacturing defect. I have a crappy Ram pickup truck that doesn't burn that much oil.
So in conclusion, your review is worthless. Interior materials really don't matter when the engine is manufactured with a defect that the manufacturer won't stand behind.
