In my opinion Burton Cummings has one of the all time great rock and roll voices.
You’ve got my Vote 💯% True!!
Super underrated talent.
Agree!
100% For me - he was THE voice of an era that we'll probably never reach again.
And seeing him live is amazing...haven't seen him since 🎶 2000 in Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦 with Randy...took my mother and we had the time of our lives!
One year has passed since The Midnight Special uploaded their first video on CZcams, The Pilot Episode. I love this channel, because it gives us something to feel good about, specially in these hard times. I would like to thank everybody involved for making these historic performances available to us fans. And it's good to know that Mr. Sugarman is doing well, so that he can see how much we appreciate him for being a true trailblazer and a visionary.
I like watching it live on Fridays after work since it's like broadcast TV, I can't skip ahead.
Yes! Thank you MS!
@@tachikaze222Me too, but I was busy tonight while it was live. I'm really grateful for these episodes!
Love this show. Can’t wait for 10-31-75
hard times? More jobs today than ever! Wish there were this many jobs in the early 80's when I was young!~ Markets at all time highs! Never going to get any better...
Watching this memory, I want my old life back.
The songs were written to be good songs, and then the great songs...became hits. In essence now, artists are only trying to write hits. (And they have teams of co-writers to help them!)
We can have our ilfe! Just close your eyes and imagine😊
@@normatible9795 and when I open my eyes, then what?
You can’t !,!!!@@salmonella508
We all do. Very very hard times right now.
Loggins and Messina and Guess Who should be in the Rock and Roll HOF.
And three dog night
Agree dudes..

Angry Eyes
Burton Cummings was the highlight of this episode. Man, did he knock it out of the park on She's Come Undone.
What a voice. Still in my top 10 voices of all time.
Burton was on his A game but the boys in The Guess Who weren't exactly chopped liver either eh?
No doubt what a cool voice.
From the blue eyed soul of "These Eyes", to the jazz inflected "Undun", to the folk pop hard rock fusion of "No Time",to the riff heavy "American Woman"to the acoustic /heavy Led Zep informed "No Sugar Tonight" the Guess Who had to be one of the most versatile groups of their time. And along with riff meister Randy Bachmann, Burton Cummings with his amazing ability to shift from gritty rock n roll to soulful ballads without skipping a beat - not to mention his R&B /Jerry Lee Lewis style piano playing were key to this criminally underrated band.
Wonderful Guess Who. No bachman by 73 however
Come for the Loggins and Messina, Stay for the Billy Preston.
And then find the Guess Who steal the show....
Come for Billy Preston... Stay hoping for more!
YES!
This was great. I saw Burton Cummings 4 times live and met him. The Guess Who are one of our great Canadian rock bands. Cheers! ✌️🇨🇦
Why the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has not invited them in is a mystery.
Because the RRHOF sucks ass. @@RawKnee1111
Love me some April Wine and Rush
@@phillippitts6294 April Wine and Rush are great too. I also saw them live, as well as Burton Cummings.
@@dwaynewladyka577 I was a stage tech for years . Rush came to the coliseum where I worked. Ran a spotlight on Neil Peart . Great show. Roll the bones tour .
Music in the 70s was the best.
couldn't agree more👍👍👍
I would lean toward the best rock years being from 1964 to 1971. The mid and late70s disco years were horrible. Bands like Aerosmith and Heart were humming along. But a lot from that particular time just doesn't hold up well in my opinion. I had enough of Barry Manilow, Debby Boone and Olivia Newton-John other than If Not for You from 71.

Started in the 60’s…then 🚀!!! ❤️🎶
I just can't believe The Guess Who is not in the Rock n Roll hall of fame, freaking UNBELIEVABLE!!
I was 15yrs old when I heard Loggings and Messina. It changed my life literally. I am still a fan all these years later. Jimmy Messina is the most underrated guitarists. He really is one of the best.❤
I had no idea Burt played the flute on Undun. Spectacular talent from Canada.
Burton (not Burt)
@@lonidelahuerta3439 Burt Reynolds
@@MrMatteNWk not Burt Reynolds, 😜
@@lonidelahuerta3439 Okayyyy, Turd Ferguson.
He learned to play it for the recording of Undun.
Imagine that it's 1973 and it's all being broadcast live on TV. Dad just bought a color TV.😁
I'm discovering new facets of rock'n'roll music....
I got a reel to reel recorder from Radio Shack and tape recording those Simul-cast FM broadcasts...or was that in the future? lol
RadioShack was a good company, but it's bad that it went bankrupt
I remember sneaking down from my bedroom to switch in the FM radio and listen veeeeery quietly to WXRT.
@@jeepstergal4043 I was blessed our family had a lake house about 80 miles from town and the folks went almost every weekend, leaving Fridays.
Ha ha, I could drag my reel to reel in the living room and tape the audio, and when they had the Stereo Simulcasts, too bad that wasn't done on Midnight Special episodes. I taped the California Jam that way.
There was a lot more going on while the cats away the mice did play, lol
This is how entertainment is meant to be! There certainly is nothing out there these days that compare to it. The Midnight Special still holds up many years later today as it did back then. Thank you so much for creating this channel and keeping the spirit of the early 70's alive and... of course one of the greatest radio and tv personalities, Mr. Wolfman Jack.
Burton Cummings - pure talent, stole the show!
Wish he would have looked into the camera, shown some personality, been more charismatic.
@@CoCotheTurtle He tried acting in one film in the 80's but it sorta bombed. Glad he stuck to music which is where he belongs.
Which one's Randy?
@@nondeblah At this point Randy had left the band.
BY DECEMBER 73 RANDY WAS IN BTO @@nondeblah
Burton Cummings one of the greatest rock singers!
There were not many more talented people in the seventies than Billy Preston and Burton Cummings. It would have been great to see them do something together on this episode. Great great show!
Cummings sartorial sense would fit in the 1990s and now, too!
The Guess Who clips are amazing!
I,ve never seen them before.
Got the “Full Sail’ album by Loggins & Messina……I still play it….
That’s so cool.
I’ve got “Native Sons” & play it at my happy place w/o Wi-Fi, it’s an “ambience” album. Love them! Their performance here is amazing!
Great album!! My mother had the original vinyl and I bought a CD version when I got a CD player.
I’m headed to see Jim Messina tonight. Loved him then, I’m sure I’ll love him tonight in a 700 seat venue!
Yeah! Guess Who “Star Baby”, an excellent performance as I recall!
I look forward to their appearance on this installment!
Our local radio station had news from the top of the hour till 5 after, when school let out at 3:00 they always played the number one song, star baby was that song for almost 3 weeks
Undun is a masterpiece
I just realized my favorite band is The Guess Who
Same!
Those performances by the guess who were outstanding. Burton Cummings is the man.
Another packed episode, certainly a wonderful trip in the Way Back Machine.

Loggins and Messina did a good job hosting. Way less silly and embarrassing than the Bee-Gee's.
The Bee Gees were good singers but bad comedians.
I love The American Graffiti Clip Such an Iconic movie that stands the Test of time Remember The Wolfman is Everywhere
A very early Lucas movie.
Ed McMahon looking all fly in his cool outfit!! ❤
Must have borrowed the outfit from Wolfman, who appears later in the same garb.
Johnny Carson Apparel Inc. Popular line of polyester suites by Hart Schaffner & Marx Co.
THE GUESS WHO PURE CANUCK GOLD!
This episode was very enjoyable. Loggins & Messina,The Guess Who and Billy Preston.Great music throughout.
I remember watching this episode. I had just found out I was pregnant and we were so happy on this night. My husband looked like these guys then. Long hair, beard etc. It was the 70s and life was so great for us
Man... Burton look like a guy from 90... Grunge !!!
Yes, ahead of his time.
Flannel shirts were around long before grunge stunk up the world..
Who wasn't wearing plaid shirts in the 70's in Canada? Even women were wearing them.
"Grunge" was just a marketing tool to sell chain wallets to suburban kids.
Burton Cummings surely was the only guy in the early 70’s with short hair in the rock business
David Gates
He had long hair down to his elbow, 6 months before this program. He's like a chameleon. Always changing. Never boring😊🎹👍🎵
Leggings and Messina: You Need a Man. Fantastic song, great in live. Jim Messina’s guitar playing is amazing.
He's absolutely killing it there!! Always loved his playing.
The Guess Who's on it and Billy Preston does the Bandstand halftime theme on top of that. Sounds splendid.
That song is called space race from nineteen seventy three not american band stand
@@RustyCrawford-cc1zy Dick Clark used Billy's "Space Race" when AB would go into their commercial break at the half way point of the telecast. This occurred from when the single was issued in 1973 until the series became a 30 min show in 1986
Thx for clearing that up. It sounded like an old 70s cop show theme song.
I truly agree😊
Burton such a talented dude..pianist,jazz flute , song writer and great vocalist...
He also plays rhythm guitar, saxophone and harmonica. Also he has filled in to play drummer & bass guitar.
CZcams has so much more, through 65 yr. Career of Burton Cummings, The Guess Who & solo.

I'd like to see a PREMIERE every night. I can't get enough of the MNS.
Burton Cummings: what a talent from one of Canada’s best ever bands.
The best performance out of all the rest of this show! Burton Cummings...I love the song "Straighten Out". Just cut his hair at this time. Burton is about his music. He doesn't care what people think of what he looks like. He's the best singer songwriter, showman & instrumentalist. He lead The Guess Who at age 22 yrs old. He plays guitar, piano, harmonica, flute, and saxophone. He played drums & bass guitar when he needed to. He's very intelligent, funny & unpretentious. Real, direct & tells it how it is.
♾️🎵🎶🎹🎸🎙️🎼🇨🇦✌️👍🎷🪈 At age 76...He is still touring this year 2024 in the USA🇺🇸
"Glamour Boy" is astonishing. I've never heard it before. I suppose Burton's proto-grunge look is in keeping with his objections to Bowie and glam rock at the time.
Burton was & is all about the music. Bowie was glamour on stage, theatrical.
i was just watching the bowie episode and surprisingly couldn't make it through an entire song. Then i find myself watching every guess who song finidhing with glamour boy-ouch!
Burton Cummings will own the show. There is just nobody else on the show that comes close to him when it comes to talent . How many times did they hit the top 40 😮
I'd say Billy Preston can match him. But no one else. They're both performance dynamos and Preston was a childhood prodigy. czcams.com/video/yBoq-lBSCzY/video.html
Loggins and Messina are better
@@johnurban7333 they're too generic. But then people like you like generic music because that's the way your brain runs . That's why God made loggins and Messina for people like you who shop in the generic Isle of your store . 🤣
Logging & Messina had three Top 40 hits...”Your Mama Don’t Dance”, “Thinking Of You” and “My Music”. Guess Who had fourteen Top 40 hits, if you include “No Sugar Tonight”, the flipside of “American Woman”. Burton Cummings had two solo Top 40 hits...”Stand Tall” and “You Saved My Soul”.
Albert Flasher, this song and Rain Dance to this day or a couple of my favorite songs. I'm so excited to see Albert performed live. I know I saw it originally but it's been a minute
I've always loved Kenny Loggins' guitar solo on Your Mama Don't Dance as well as Jim Messina's riff on that Strat. They were both really fine players that complimented each other well. Of all the guitar bands of the era they are definitely the most underrated.
Messina is playing a Fender Telecaster.
50 years later and Martin Mull is still funny as all get out!
🙏🏆🏆🏆🤗💙⭐
Thank you for sharing this
Cant say I'm too familiar with Leo Kottke, but what I heard there was pretty darn good. I'll have to listen to more of his stuff down the road. Not to many people can take a twelve stringer and go to town with a slide. The best guy I've seen who could dominate a 12 stringer with a slide was the late Johnny Winter.
He was a virtuoso standard for acoustic guitar at that time
He’s Fricken!! 😍 Fabulous!!
The song he was doing was titled 'Vaseline Machine gun'.
@@lotharroberts5978Hmmm, what an interesting song “title”, thank you! I swear the way his fingers frenetically go up and down that fret board, it’s like they’ve been dipped in vaseline beforehand!
And in 2024, Leo is still playing Vaseline Machine Gun in his concerts. On a six string and slower and prettier. He admits to playing way too fast when he was young with his youthful exuberance
Man, does this bring me back.
THANK YOU!!!
The first time I heard ' Share the land.' I was hooked.
Always loved Loggins and Messina and luckily got to see them in concert many years ago at Blossom Music Center northern Ohio.
Burton Cummings sounds GREAT live!
Burton Cummings is the man...note perfect. Good gracious he was so damn good in his prime. No one sounds anything like him.
I had no idea Martin Mull played guitar. He was really funny. Love the chicken solo.
Chek out his album Martin Mull_ Martin Mull (1972) and you can laugh -=**
26 years old, and writing and singing songs like "Glamour Boy." Twenty-six. I mean, what was I doing at 26? Just a stupendous talent, a stunning voice. Thank god for Canada, our best kept secret.
💯🇨🇦. Burton Cummings took control of The Guess Who at age 22. He was ahead of his time. I love seeing all his concerts & interviews. He's intelligent, well spoken, direct in conversation & funny.😅
Wow, this aired one day before my 4th birthday. Loved this show when I got a little older.
bedtime was ~9pm for me in the 70s, alas.
LOL, for me it was 5 days before my 4th birthday
I was a senior in high school !
I am so thankful I was able to be apart of this timeframe. Wish our world would be like these times. Am I the only one that thinks Sean Penn looks like Messina? The resemblance is crazy strong.
I was 10 when this aired. Mom and Dad didn't stay up with me. Good memories.
Guess Who with Burton Cummings were quite interesting band! Not only for their hits but also 'the deep cuts'. Thank you!
Wow, Leo Kottke! Young man is a virtuoso with that slide!
That young man will be 79 this year! Pretty cool to see him so young.

Burton Cummings is the songwriter, singer, pianist & leader of The Guess Who.
There is so much of his music, live perforances & interviews on CZcams.
In my opinion, he is the best from 1965 to 1985. He is still touring 2024 at 76 yrs. Old
This music was in the top ten when I was 15 years old. Thank God punk rock saved my life.
Yeah punk is the absolute peak of music just ask it
Can't wait, The Midnight Special!
OMG - these Midnight Specials were absolutely packed with great music, eh?
People are always asking what was the greatest decade...do they really need to ask? You're looking at it.
Looking back at The Midnight Special, it's better than ever!
Now my youth is a just passing fancy in a Midnight Special dream.
Wow I haven't heard "Space Race" probably in like easily 50 years. I was just about 7 or 8 when I first heard it on my local radio station in NYC. Honestly never knew Billy Preston did the song, but it hardly surprises me whatever he puts out, it's all gold. Martin Mull was hilarious. I never knew he played guitar let alone that well in front of a live audience. This was the earliest version of him I've ever seen before.
My 2 FAV songs undun and dannys song in the 70s. great to see it sang live by original artists.
The geuss who, what a great band even with all the personel changes,I was fortunate enough to see burton cummings in ringos all-star band he was the most talented performer in very talented band

Jim Messina is absolutely on fire on You Need A Man!!! Amazing Tele picking!
Wow, had no clue Burton played the flute too-so SUPER multi-talented!! Love this group!!!👍❤️🙏🌞‼️
Classic Loggins and Messina. Oh My, this is good stuff.
Great episode! Kenny Loggins, Billy Preston. Burton Cummings, Leo Kottke!
In Saigon I used to listen to Wolf Man Jack on the radio.
I have cassette tapes to this day of his nightly show that I recorded on my porto- studio.
Then he came to the Saigon USO and I was fortunate to be able to see him. For a short minute.LOL!
Excellent music, singers and bands on the Midnight Special from back in the day.A blast from the past!
What is this? 🧐 Randomly popped up in my feed…I’m all in!
She’s Come Undun, I sure did when seeing the gorgeous music man Kenny Loggins in concert ‘78 solo w/o Messina though, darn it. Can still picture him wearing very tight green stretch pants um-hum, yummy he put on a great show. Can his long hair be any more fabulous here? I don’t think so. Have their ‘76 album “Native Sons” at my “happy place” in the mountains w/o Wi-Fi, one of the songs on it has the sound of a “crackling fire” it reminds me of the wood burning heat stove there, it’s an “ambience” song as the band is dressed up in old west style cowboy outfits on the sleeves/cover. Giddy UP!! 🎶🐴❤️
When Leo Kottke plays the guitar, he always amazes as he and his instrument seem to become fused together as “one”, a genius, wearing that slide on his pinky finger. Wow!
Enjoyed the “American Graffiti” movie scene with Richard Dreyfus, one of my favorite films, seems like ‘73 was just yesterday, doesn’t it?
Are you the Wolfman ?
Naw
Pushes the play button of a tape recording and says The Wolfman is everywhere.
I remember Curt walking out of the studio and hearing The Wolfman talking to his listeners through the building’s intercom and Curt looks back at the Wolfman through the window and looks in amazement.
I agree it’s one of my favs. It’s such an iconic movie. George Lucas was on his game along with all the actors and actresses involved with American Graffiti.
@@curtisphilumalee1447 I need to watch it again as I cant remember most of it, it’s been much too long ago. Can’t believe I don’t have the dvd, loved all of the cool cars and the racing scene with an “unknown” actor, cowboy hat wearing Harrison Ford…giddy up!
That ‘1932 bright yellow Ford Standard Coupe sure stood out, just read that it’s known as Milner’s Coupe.
Reminds me of the red one in ZZ Top bands videos.
Vroooom 💨 Vroooom💨💨💨
Great footage that brings back wonderful memories of those pre-MTV, pre-streaming live music days where the artists actually were also fine musicians, too. How lucky we were to come of age during that time! It's like going back in a time machine!

Martin Mull playing guitar. Wow, could have knocked me over with an egg...
Sorry to hear that
I was in the Us Air Force, stationed at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas, we all got our chores done just so we could watch this in the dayroom in the barracks! Great memories, great musicians, Burton Cummings' voice is incredible still o this day! Less than a year later got to see Billy Preston, Grand Funk Railroad and Leon Russell at the Airman's Club at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX, solidified for me what I was going to do when Uncle Sam was done with me.....and got to meet and work with so many of my musical heroes over the years in Nashville.
Saw Jim Messina two years ago in a real small intimate venue. It was one of the most enjoyable shows I’ve been to in quite some time. He and his band sounded great and his sharing of stories made for a great evening. My only wish was that his pal Kenny Loggins was there with him.
