    I made this exact mistake I went from a Toyota to a 3/4 ram cummins Laramie

    Dude you are so much on point with this video. I ordered a f350 crew cab Lariat SRW truck in Jan thinking I was good in the future to get a 5th trailer. Of course the dealer is going to lie and say "oh yeah you can tow any 5th wheel with that truck" So I did the research. yes it may have the towing compacity of 20,000lbs however I did not take into consideration of payload compacity just as you spoke about in your video. Realizing I made a mistake I went back and got the same truck in a dully for that very reason. I think future Kevin will be happier now. I think I will make a video about this when I get my truck in.

    I’d get a 4500 or equivalent. This way you get a wide track front axel and a much tighter turning radius vs a 3500 dually.
    The big thing about towing is you don’t want to go “over weight” ie you have a truck rated to pull 12k but your trailer is 16k. If you get in an accident Your insurance will drop your coverage and you’re on your own.

  • @bobowhispers
    @bobowhispers Před 2 lety

    This man speaks truth!
    Had a 2020 1500 Limited and went to a 2021 2500 Limited. We pull a 35’ 6500lb (loaded for trips) ultra lite Coachmen Apex. Scales has us around 860 hitch weight loaded up and we never tow wet. The 1500 was capable thanks to WDH, Air suspension, and proper loading and we traveled over 17,000 miles in the last 7 months with zero issues. However, we had a hard time fitting into gas places and stopping for gas every 2 hours got old fast. The Hemi screamed on hills and steep grades (think Tetons, Ozarks, Appalachia areas). The problem signs were that OEM tires lasted only 12,000 miles before the wear bars went out and I always felt towing shouldn’t have to take so much mental driving and work if that makes sense. What sealed the deal for us was when we faced our first real windy day returning from Wyoming with gusts of 25-30MPH and we had our first “oh $#%\” moment while getting passed by people pulling similar loads with slightly larger vehicles at speed. Traded the 1500 the following week.
    Just did a 8+ hour trip (round trip) with the 2021 2500 Limited Cummins (no mega) and it was effortless. No worry about fitting into gas stalls as diesel truck stops are plentiful and getting 16MPG towing compared to 7MPG, and add to the effortless and quietness made it very well worth the change for us. I didn’t even have to stop to fill up and arrived in both locations with more than 1/3 of a tank left (leaving full both times). We faced 20MPH gusts based on AccuWeather’s info and it didn’t phase us one bit. No tail wagging this dog.
    My payload is just shy of 2000lbs with my options and I added sumo springs to keep it level. That number may not be a lot of payload compared to the leaf springed competitors, but is plenty for us and our growing family of 5 based on how we load with nothing in the truck or bed, but everything in/on the camper.
    I do have to ask, many say that the ratings are based on legal and registration/commercial reasons and that the axles can handle and support more than the stickers say. I’m not testing this, but what do you think about that?
    Thanks for the great insights and all you do for the truck/towing community JB!

    Most of your information is good. The weight of the current Cummins is around 1100#. You are spot on about the GVW limits for taxes and fees. The problem with the Cummins is the electronic 4BT puts out more than enough power. And with 3.73 or 4.10 gears. 35" tires are practical.
    We have a 2500 Crewcab Tradesman 4wd with 3.42 gears. It does tow our 7x16 cargo trailer real nice. But only gets 13mpg at California towing speeds. But our Dodge Durango gets 15.5mpg towing that trailer. The plus is the VGT turbo technology. That the 2500 makes towing smoother in the mountains.

      I though the fuel tank size was the same. And I hope the factory was not printing the wrong numbers on the sticker. Shopping from the internet. I decided to go with a 3500 longbed with the Cummins. But when I got to the dealer that was only 5 miles from my house. Another customer was signing the papers on that truck. And due to the shortages. The next lowest priced 3500 Cummins powered truck, was like $15,000 more.

  • @cfyves
    @cfyves Před 2 lety

    Amen!! I had a small truck and a small trailer last year... and learned about all this stuff prior to shopping for the upgrades... I went shopping for a truck that would meet my needs, 6 people (bench seat) and enough payload/towing...
    So now, I got 6 people, about 1050 tongue weight (loaded) from my trailer, my WD Hitch (all in all probably weighs 130 lbs), 300ish lbs of cargo in the bed and the dog... and my 3/4 ton Silverado (with Duramax) has 3300 lbs of payload. This is exactly the kind of truck I knew I wanted, not high trim either... try to over estimate the numbers... assume that the factory hitch weights are under what they will actually be from the RV dealer info... because they will be. Even with over estimating, I still have just under 600 lbs of payload by my estimates and I'm far under the towing capacity (which is probably the secondary number to payload).
    I'm in a good comfortable zone. JB, your channel as well as a few others have given me and I'm sure countless others some good information to think about! Hope life is treating you well!

    • @cfyves
      @cfyves Před 2 lety

      @@JB_WhoWork Yeah it pretty much is. I may be estimating my hitch weight a little high, my intention is to actually buy a scale, but I'm using a video from Big Truck Big RV as a reference, where he went around to several different TTs/RVs with a scale and compared dry weights as displayed on stickers vs what they actually weighed. There was quite a difference in many cases. So estimating high is a good way to go in my books.

    Went to the dealership last week and there was nothing but used vehicles and "model vehicles" with a waiting line and you had to order MONTHS out and wait for the vehicle to hopefully come in. The dismantling of our society in the US is real. And we're just letting it all happen in front of our eyes, while we continue to give away our personal liberties and freedom because the politicians told us what is best for us.

    The price differences between a 2500 and 3500 are so minimal. I tow 12 000lbs several times a year and went with the 1 ton. Probably not necessary. . You're already at 80k canadian for a base laramie, what's another 3k to go to a 1 ton? You won't have payload worries. Doesn't squat down as much. Plus the HO is a beast

    • @JohnDiMartino
      @JohnDiMartino Před 2 lety

      Maybe you can’t tell in a loaded limited it you sure can tell in a gas engine big horn.Night and day difference, IMO 3500s are for contractors and work trucks ,the coil sprung 2500s are for dual purpose trucks daily drivers and weekend tow vehicles. In the real world most people don’t care about the payload number much when it comes to 2500vs 3500 srw. The 2500s have an artificially low GVWR and payload for DOT purposes,the brakes are identical,the frames are the same ,the real difference is in the rear suspension in the case of the Ram and tires. For personal use weight ratings are not as important. The rule has always been to stay within your tires ratings and axle ratings ,DOT allows 5 percent over on all numbers , axles and total gvw. Another great video.

      I just bought a 2021 Ram 2500 for towing our 7200 lb (loaded) trailer…without towing it’s a big difference between that and the 3500 in ride quality (my father in law has a 3500 Laramie). I came from a Ram 1500 Laramie, which is mostly as smooth as a car - the 2500’s ride is exactly between the 1500 and the rough ride of the 3500. In fact I’d say the biggest difference is in steering feel, where the 1500 is very direct. I think the Ram 2500 is perfect for longer, heavier travel trailers where the gas engine is still perfectly fine (under 10,000 lbs would be my guess)

    I have a 2021 2500 bighorn crew/cummins with the 5th wheel prep. I plug my VIN into the ram tow capacity guide and it comes back with 2202lb payload, and 20181.75lb max towing. The payload rating matches the sticker on my truck. If I just use the model year and specs, it comes back with same payload but an 18000lb max towing. JB, care to weigh in on which one you think is correct? The model year/spec doesn't include the 5th wheel prep option which I have. Thanks.

    I think most people don’t even think about payload. They just know they have a heavy duty diesel and then just send it. And for the most part that’s ok because even with the lower payload ratings they’re typically not exceeding the axle ratings. However the problem would be if they ever get into an accident. A good lawyer might take notice that they were far exceeding their truck’s legal ratings.
    It’s kind of a fine line I suppose for personal use. What’s truly silly is my 1500 has a higher payload than my 2500 had, and that happens a lot for 2500 diesels.

    If u plan on towing heavy 15000 plus pounds on a regular basis get a 1 ton dually tradesman or tradesman level 2! I have a 21 longhorn and with my auxiliary fuel tank witch is smaller than I wanted due to my payload and passengers plus the b&w hitch witch is heavier in the ram than ford or Chevy and the pin weight of my 5th wheel I am right on my max payload! My same truck in a tradesman has almost a thousand more Payload. Look at everything u will have in your truck and in the bed when towing and the weight of your trailer than buy your truck. All the creature comforts are nice but your payload suffers from it.

      This is why I’ve looked at the new F250s. You can get the Powerstroke in a Lariat or higher and still have nearly 2800lbs of payload. If Ram offered owners an option to up their 2500 GVWR to 10,800 they’d be much better off. Maybe they are worried it would hurt 3500 sales? I wouldn’t step into a 3500 MC at 12,300 because then likely go over the 26k CDL limit pulling a 14k gooseneck with 2 Jeeps.
