    When i tell people that dobermann’s are my favorite dog breed, and i want one when i get older when have a family or something, they always tell me that they are dangerous something like that and they should be kept as a guard dog instead, it always irritates me since they are very well suitable of being a family dog aswell as a guard dog, it mostly depends on how the dog is trained aswell as it’s personality, and not the breed.

    I get that Minute Earth is trying to say that we shouldn't judge a dog simply based on what breed it is (e.g., it's a pitbull therefore it must be aggressive)--which is a fair enough point. The video, however, seems to be conflating breed groups (which is very general and encompasses a number of different dogs breeds) with a singular dog breed (such as a doberman). Thus it's not a good argument in support of their point.
    It's not surprising that there is a large amount of variation in temperment, mental abilities, & behavior within breed groups (such as the working dog breed group), since dogs within breed groups (such as Doberman, Newfoundland, Husky, etc.) were often breed to perform very different jobs (such as guarding, rescue, pulling sleds, etc.). For example, Newfoundlands who were developed to rescue people are incredibly friendly even towards people they don't know (which is good considering their job--rescuing strangers) whereas dobermans were breed to protect their owners and property and are on average pretty wary of strangers who enter their homes (and yes aggressive in this situation). This same logic can be applied to the other breed groups (herding, toy, sporting, etc.).
    Even though it's clearly wrong to think that all huskies, pitbulls will be the same (clearly there are individual differences in genes and environment for each dog), the evidence presented in this video doesn't nullify the idea that specific dog breeds (which were breed to look and behave in certain ways often to serve a specific function), have characterstics that distinguishes them *on average* from other breeds.
    I'm not trying to say that all dogs of a specific breed act the same way with no variation...far from it (I'm sure there are lazy huskies, agressive newfoundland, non-protective dobermans out there), but to say the breed has nothing to do with it goes against the idea that genes influence personality and mental abiliteis in some way. Keep in mind too, that since dogs for most people primarily serve as compansions, many dog breeds in recent times have been breed to reduce the aggressive tendencies that were historically characterstic of their breed (the great dane is a good example of this). Thus, if there are fewer differences in the psychology between dog breeds today, this likely has something to do with it.

      I have a Doberman who thinks and behaves like a labrador stereotype around humans.. he will lick them to death.. however, he is the most aggressive protective dog if there are other animals near the house or around his humans. He has gone up against bulls and cobras to protect the home. He was raised to treat all humans as friends. It's all in how you raise them.

      Racist

    • @boguslav9502
      @boguslav9502 Před 4 lety +3

      @@hg.chetan This is not true at all, dogs, much like humans have personalities and natures. Breed groups on average have certain natures much like humans have certain natures. (to better get an image imagine cultural differences as differences in nature). These differences are immutable, unchanging, and generally present as certain temperaments. Even if we find one special case, we can clearly see a trend say with for example japanese culture being collective and USA culture being individualistic, much like we can see Pitbulls being aggressive and retrievers being more friendly.
      Basically if you take dog genetic tests, much like humans, you can identify its breed like a person can identify their ethnicity this way. These then of course overlap, but then when we look to see what changes we see clusters emerge, and with it we see trends and traits appear, illnesses as well.
      So I would say you can do everything you can try to raise them right, you cannot however not take into account their nature. A pitbull will forever be more prone to aggression more than a lab, or a collie.
      Not only is the evidence as said above, its literally statistically everywhere. Humans, dogs, everything has its own nature nad we either are responsible and appreciate and respect it, or we ignore it and it leads to tragedy.

    • @boguslav9502
      @boguslav9502 Před 4 lety +2

      @IHatePteranodons Thats the thing its not really that simple and generally statistics show this brutally. As well as the fact that we often misunderstand culture as something a people, an individual does and participates in but we often forget that ulture is also tied into something such as ancestry.
      People dont really beave like those around them because they are raised identically, rather they still act and identify differently because ancestry is, a very important element of culture and of ourselves.
      The easy way to imagine this is a simple mind experiment, replacing people X with people Y, lets say we take the Nigerians (X) and replace them all with chinese (Y). A slow burn kind of way where the chinese eventually replace the nigerians after say 500 years. BUT all the chinese were raised in nigerian culture. Can we say for sure that Nigerian culture exists anymore? Well rather no, and that is because culture isnt only something you do, it is something you also are (we can infer here that ulture has a point where it simply eventually dies, due to too much change over time until it is not at all comparable to what it once was). The reason for this is because culture evolves with a specific people, who have very specific traits, in a specific place over a specific time. Thus only that people can everyembody say Nigerian or chinese culture, only they can carry and propagate it.
      You can be say "chinesized" ? or "Nigerianised" but you will never be either nor a member of either cultural group. Rather it would be akin to a boarder collie trained to act like a pitbull and vice versa, human share about the same amount of divergance as dogs do from each other.
      generally the way one can see a hirarchy is - ethnic population -> culture, rather than culture -> population. Since the latter asserts that it forms the former when that simply isnt true (people tend to unite mot readily based on their immutable traits as is, ancestry being a huge element of identity is thus important in all cultures)
      This is the reason why I brought up cultures, mostly because it illustrates the differences albeit the seeming similarities, but also because it is an accurate comparison. (the only time we see multi ethnic societies is when there really is no original culture left, and it really is just a stew of things people do, without any real roots.)

    For my various medical issues, I have a service dog in training. I get a lot of crap for him because he looks like a rottweiler. Actually, he is a mix of the two "most dangerous" breeds, a Rottweiler and a Pitbull. It's not fun to talk to people about my new puppy only to get the dreaded question "What breed is he?"
    (It always ends in some kind of "oh. Are you sure that's a good idea?")
    I purposely chose his breed because it provides me with what I need (a tank of a rottweiler, to use as a mobility dog, and the unwavering loyalty and affection of a pit bull) I also love rottweiler coloring, and also the wide head and open-mouthed "smile" both breeds are known for.
    I know this will probably cause many conflicts in the future, especially because I look like an ordinary college-age girl, but I'm determined to let it help me educate the public on service dogs and the damage of breed bias.

    I feel like the reason these dog breeds are associated with these jobs is because they have been breed to have PHYSICAL characteristics that make them better at it. Then they can be trained since birth to fit that role.
    Certain breeds may not be more aggressive than other but are born with a physical form that makes them more dangerous. Raised to have an even temperament they are safe, but it only take a few poorly raised ones to give them a bad rep.

      The one who has an owner who hasn't established himself or herself as the pack leader clearly lets the dog become the pack leader. It isn't right to classify psychology by breed, only physical traits. A pit bull for instance will only show distrust for you or biting because you have not yet established yourself as a pack leader or a friendly face and told them they are in a secure environment. A pack member follows the leader, so naturally they are as the leader is. A chihuahua would be willing to tear you to pieces just like a pit bull for instance would if placed in an unstable environment that they weren't meant to be in or are lacking the right leader.

She’s a rescue btw and I literally cannot imagine why someone would neglect her in a garage because she super sweet lol

    Weren't dog breeds bred for certain personalities? This conversation always has a subtext of defending pit bulls, but how often have you seen a mean lab or a sweet chihuahua? They exist, but how often?

    • @tarynkane9833
      @tarynkane9833 Před 4 lety +5

    • @bennygo3
      @bennygo3 Před 4 lety +3

    • @TheFrontyer
      @TheFrontyer Před 4 lety +7

      The chihuahua problem is mostly because of incompetent owners. They usually have no clue how to train a dog and to be honest they dont care much, because they dont really have to. They cant do much damage conpared to a big dog.

    • @mandymills1031
      @mandymills1031 Před 4 lety

      Curtis Densmore yeah. I mean if you are mean to your lab then obviously it’s gonna be a shitty dog. Likewise with a bulldog. However when training a bulldog or something like it you have to train it to not be aggressive. You don’t have to necessarily do that with other dog because they aren’t as aggressive. Obviously you must train all dogs to not be aggressive but you really do have to do more with those damn pit bulls. Ugh.

    • @yorkshire_tea_innit8097
      @yorkshire_tea_innit8097 Před 4 lety

      Yes that was the subtext, but nothing she said promoted that position if you actually listen. Plus, there is always an issue with looking at "aggressiveness" as an isolated personality trait. A slightly aggressive Chihuahua is less of a problem than a slightly aggressive pitbull. This effects the practical usage of the information, and it effects the way in which people keep the dogs which in turn effects their personality. So its a bit stupid to take these studies further than their original usage of proving a very small isolated fact.

    I have a cross Springer Spaniel with Japanese Akita and he is incredibly smart. He figured out himself how to twist door handles to open doors, and get your attention by slapping your knee with his paw.
    He is moody though, he occasionally growls at my cat if he tries to climb over him.
    He almost never barks or makes any verbal noise so he mostly communicates through a form of sign language he invented, placing his chin on your lap, giving paws, high fives, and placing his chin on the arms of sofas is usually how he tells you certain things. We didn't train him to do that he just sort of made up his own language.

    Dobermans are excellent dogs with children, especially if properly trained. Their breed originates with Karl Dobermann, a German tax collector. He would often have to travel through bad parts of town carrying sums of money, so the risk of him being robbed was very high. So he needed a large, highly intelligent dog to protect him and that was how the doberman was born. Dobermans are not just guard dogs but also bred to be personal body guards and companions, so they are very sensitive to emotional cues as to best understand what their humans need and intelligent to understand what needs to be done. Dogs like Dobermans get a bad rep from the perspective of intruders and strangers who are not trusted by the dogs.

      All I know is that my dogs know 'food', 'dinner' 'snack' 'kitchen' and 'bowl'. When we tried spelling words they learned those too. They now also know euphemisms like 'mince time'. All-in-all maybe several dozen words.
      Yet they are still unaware of how a dog door works.

    My dog is a shih tzu cross something-or-other, and we thought it would be a pretend dog for comfort since our two other dogs died (we've only really had working breeds untill now). But Trotsky decided that he would much rather roll on his back for scratches, chase horses (once he jumped out of a moving car and chased a rottweiler into it's own backyard) and roll in/eat shit. Seems like that whole "toy dog" thing is more abott how you raise them than anything else.

    weird. for my 4th bday my mom and dad got me a dog, a standard schnauzer named Brodie. he was originally bred to be a show dog, but his bottom teeth are in front of the front teeth and that disqualifies him. so he went up for adoption, and we bought him. my mom and dad bought him thinking that he would protect me. the only thing he does that could scare strangers is jump up and down excitedly lol. there where these teenagers that threw toilet paper on the trees in front of my house and he barked at them tho.

      Angana Bose probably the public generalized it that way which it doesn't have to be. It's not the dog's fault if they are being bad, its because their owners are bad...

      People often confuse dogs that *can* fight with dogs that have a tendency towards aggression. In fact, many of the dogs with the strongest tendencies towards aggression are very small breeds. Of course people aren't so scared of them because of their size and limited potential damage (which is still more than most think). I honestly don't know as a breed which way rottweilers go, but any dog from any breed can be ruined, it just is easier for some than others. Any breed can be raised properly with some competent training.

      To be fair, this video doesn't mention aggression. There is also the fact that some dogs have more damage potential than others (e.g. an English Mastiff could hurt you more than a Chihuahua).

    • @bigdp141
      @bigdp141 Před 7 lety +9

      The thing is those dogs banned due to aggression aren't actually more or less aggressive than any other dog breed. True they have more damage potential due to size or bite strength like Graham X said earlier but they're mostly seen as aggressive due to who buy/train that breed of dog most often. You're more likely to see pit bulls in dog fights and rough neighborhoods than collies for example. That doesn't actually mean pits are "meaner".

    • @Beer_Dad1975
      @Beer_Dad1975 Před 7 lety +5

      Because statistics do show that Pitbulls are highly aggressive and far more dangerous than other breeds...
      www.livescience.com/27145-are-pit-bulls-dangerous.html
      However what is not entirely understood is the reason for the aggression. Some of it may be due to selective breeding for aggression, which has certainly taken place, but it also could be because a particular demographic is more likely to own certain species of dogs - ie, if you want an aggressive dog, you buy a breed that is seen as aggressive, and then you treat it in such a way that you encourage its aggression - pair that with the fact that such breeds are normally very strong with powerful bites and you have a news story.
      Stronger laws on dog ownership & treatment would probably work better than banning certain breeds, but based on the unarguable statistics, pitbulls need to go.

      correlation doesn't always equal causation. while there may be statistical evidence of link it's doesn't mean there not a common factor in the case of dangerous dogs it's that idiots think one breed is tougher so they buy that dog and bring it up that way.

      My black lab, on the other hand, got in SERIOUS trouble more than once for biting people; once, an actual burglar, once an angry neighbor who had grabbed my brother by the arm, and once a police officer who had the wrong address, kept asking for a person we didn't know, and then tried to shove past my mother with one hand on his gun and get into the house. He was a really friendly dog, even around strangers, but if he thought you were trying to hurt somebody he would stop you.

      My black lab is the softest dog in the world, if another dog gets feisty though he won't mess about and when i take him hunting he'll just switch from being soft to knowing exactly what to do. Labradors are strong as hell and can bit like much bigger dogs, no matter how soft they seem they will protect their owners and are very good at it
