    After years of driving myself crazy with various car stereo installations. First for my personal use, then I started installing them in my son's cars got him addicted. Home audio equipment up the wazoo, everything to me was specifications until recently. There's so much BS out there now that I find the specifications mean nothing. What matters is the actual sound , do I like the way it sounds ? I may like a particular type of sound and my friend might like a completely different kind of sound . That's what I've learned playing around many years with audio equipment. Wholesale, retail building my own equipment fixing my friends Right Down the Line. I have to listen to it specifications can drive a person mad after all the research in the world you can hook it up and expect it to sound like something that it doesn't deliver. Happens all the time.

    • @wal
      @wal  Před 2 lety +10

      Buying from Amazon allows you to try in home and just return if you don’t like the sound. I don’t talk much about SQ as it’s subjective. Unless I hear some crazy buzzing or ringing, I only comment they sound ok to me

      With the market so saturated, if they actually gave specs, most companies would go under, either from just being middle of the road, or due to their gear actually sucking. So annoying that I decided to just get the equipment to do most speaker and amp measurements at home so I can have the actual specs of my gear. One thing I can say is that there is often not much correlation between cost and actual sound quality. Some very inexpensive gear (amps, speakers, headphones) can have state of the art performance, but other expensive posh brands will measure poorly and not sound good. If specs were given to and used properly by the consumer, there would only be about 1/10th the number of manufacturers.

    • @mysock351C
      @mysock351C Před 2 lety +3

      And as for specs, they really give you virtually nothing at all. Just some vague numbers to make it look legit from the quick online preview or on the store shelf. Some of the specs are real, but companies only give the absolute minimum lest it give bad optics to the consumer. This is doubly-so now that things like Amazon exist.

No joke the reg focus II sells for 12 grand yes 12k per pair. I didn't pay close to that but all I gotta say is for a quarter the og price or hell a tenth the og price I could build much better. All 24 k gold traces on crossover board 3 switches on x over board besides the bi amp option hell of a way to toast 12 stacks lol twelve thousand not twelve hundred lol. Open it up or buy replacement parts or drivers n it's like wtf where did that money go???? Fkrs can't cost more than 800 to a grand to build from what I can see.

    I agree the biggest selling point is the sub output. It’s not as common on cheap speakers like this. Too bad it was faulty. Easy infix though if you turn the sub in and off before the speakers. I know it requires an rta you might not have but for a speaker I would’ve liked to see how close to that 45hz it really got and an spl rating. But it was a good video. I love how your not afraid to take things apart band show us what we’re really getting for the money. And I was surprised to see you could get a 55x2 amp for $7 on Ali kinda shows you where all your money is going on these purchases. Thanks

    Interesting video. I think most of us that follow you have broad interest in audio products (home, car, pro audio), so nice when you branch out from car amps. I have a few thoughts. If your powered subwoofer has a subsonic filter, that thump probably wouldn't bother it much. Do they have any built in crossovers, either high pass no the woofers, or low pass on the sub out? I really think you ought to get a mic and show test curves on reviews like this. You could pretty easily get a pretty good idea of the output curve, whether those mode buttons did anything to the output, and you could see if there were crossovers.

    • @wal
      @wal  Před 2 lety +3

      The thump is a voltage spike and subsonic would not help. I’ll think about doing freq response testing when I do speakers. Thanks for the feedback

    Perhaps, the switchmode power supply can deliver 2A constantly, and more in a burst situation. Interesting.

  • @joenagel6644
    @joenagel6644 Před 2 lety +4

    The power supply is also rated at 120-240V @ 1.5A which at 120V makes the input power 180W. Power supplies are often rated at that power for continuous use but cheaper manufacturing techniques usually remove the safety’s and over tax the components which usually results in early failure. Would be interesting to see the power supply under a thermal while running the system limited to 36W total output and comparing it to the system maxed out.

    • @mysock351C
      @mysock351C Před 2 lety +2

      They are abusing it quite a bit. Worthwhile to note that its audio, so the power is not continuous, but rather the peak power will be a minimum of 2X the RMS power, just due to math, with a conventional linear amplifier. The only saving grace here is that its class-D so there is some impedance matching, so its not quite that bad. I have built similar SMPS power supplies for my small amps that put out around 60-80W or so, but even the transformers I use are bigger than that entire power supply. Without any limiting for safety they will put out 200+ watts of continuous power, so that tells you that there's a good chance this thing might burn the house down if you abuse the speakers too much. The IC probably has thermal overload protection, but still I would want to buy a proper one. God only knows what's actually in there. Its probably some e-waste or something.

    the three mode buttons only work through a physical connection not through the Bluetooth connection, when connected through Bluetooth it uses your phone's DAC or EQ to control the sound quality and tone. Fun fact these Bluetooth bookshelf speakers can also be used as passive drivers with a standard receiver amplifier just use the connections on the back like the standard positive and negative speaker inputs but do not connect the power or any other connections to the Bluetooth driven speaker and you are good to go just control as normal through your stereo receiver...

    It might not give the thump turn on and off with all subwoofers. It all depends on the auto sense circuit and the timer.

Also, I would like to know the output voltage of the power supply under load as a static voltage and a loaded voltage aren't likely to be the same on a cheese power supply.. Back to the video.

    Now you are going to have to get your hands on a 24V power supply and re-test it!
    Oh and I would caution against using the supplied power supply, being rated at 2A while 4A is being drawn from it is a fire hazard waiting to happen!
    Those wall warts don't show up their temperature very well on the outside, I had a wall wart that was plugged into the mains but it wasn't plugged into anything, I noticed that the plastic shell was getting warm and I was curious if there was a bad capacitor on the output that was leaking DC and beginning to short the output causing the power supply to work hard even though it wasn't being used for anything... This wall wart had screws holding it together so I was able to open it. When I touched the transformer, I burnt my fingers! I couldn't believe how hot it was and yet it was only warm to the touch on it's outer shell!
    I would recommend to anyone who is looking at getting these powered speakers to get a power supply that is capable of delivering more current than 2A...
    I would even suggest to use a power supply rated for a higher voltage for which at a given volume level, the higher voltage power supply would be delivering less current and thus be more efficient.... The higher voltage will also provide more power output when the need arises...
    I hope that this is helpful to someone!
    I would be interested in seeing what temperature the wall wart get to after being used at higher output levels... Not sure if it has an actual transformer inside which you can tell by it's weight or it's a SMPS type? Who knows?
    But I would definitely like to see the output power with a 24V power supply! I bet that it would get pretty loud! Those 4" woofers are going to bump hard!

  • @Iowa599

    I'm not surprised the PSU is underrated. It is warranted to make _at least_ 2 amps at 18v, beyond that is extra. It may overheat & break after using too hard or too long.
    You monitored only current during use to see 4+ amps, try monitoring voltage when drawing that much current. I predict the voltage lowers substantially, and that means you need a better psu to do some meaningful 2 ohm tests!
    Also, the added powered sub may thump when the head unit is powered with other equipment in many circumstances, not just this. The general fix was delayed power cycles.

    • @wal
