This year I have finished both VIII and IX with around 45 hours in each, so I eonly have VIII to go by as a comparison; however I would say I prefer VIII on the whole. The map is better and the monster encounters made more sense to me. With that said, I loved the way IX opened up the map vertically with all the abilities, and the constant stream of dungeons requiring you to use all those abilities. I think in general you only really had that one dungeon with Dana in VIII which was cool enough switching between her forms, but I think they are just handled that bit better, and are just that bit more satisfying in IX. I'd happily replay VIII and IX, but I definitely think I'd be drawn to VIII first.
Adol losing his powers every game is funny af every time. "hey Adol, remember when you had vampires powers and could fly around obstacles?"

You should definitely try Ys Memories of Celceta. Excellent game that is closer to VIII than IX 🙂
