  • Why I Loved YS Seven
I can't get enough of the Ys Series, and I made it my mission for this year to play not only Ys VI and Monstrum Nox, but also Ys Seven!
And it's fair to say it delivered on everything I expect from the Ys Series!
Like Ark of Napishtim, Ys Seven was a soft reboot of the Series changing up the formula on the gameplay front. It's the first game that utilised the group based style that many modern Ys fans will be familiar with, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's clunky as a result!
If you're curious about the Ys Series, or wondering what Ys game you should start with, hopefully this might give you the push you need to dive in to Falcom's longrunning stalwart.

i tried this game on hard on psp and i remember the first boss being a severe damage sponge and doing massive damage, like he killed you in 2 or 3 hits and i was just doing chip damage to it. i'm in the middle of playing 8 on hard and it feels nice and challenging without taking such an absurd amount of time to kill a boss. i'm pretty far in 8 now so the bosses are getting tough, but i remember that first boss in ys 7 being harder than all of them. i also played nayuta on psp on hard and it felt like a well balanced challenge just like 8. i gotta give 7 another go once i finish 8.

@@MinhLe19303 It's more than just Ys never having done it before, it actively undermines a trend that's become kind of a series cliche at this point. The series has reached a point where the developers have realized "hey, we reuse a couple of these story beats in almost every installment," and have actively started subverting them. Sometimes it's poking fun at it like 9 did with the shipwrecks, but the antagonist here directly capitalizes on another of the most common trends to fuel the twist.

I loved every moment of playing YS 7 on my PSP all those years ago, i was still in elementary school and YS 7 blew my mind. The story, the combat, the puzzles, the characters. They are special to me, fighting each dragon was exhilarating. Especially the plot twist at the end. This was my first YS game and the first game i took an deep interest with until finish so i didn't know that flash guard existed haha, i often wondered why the game was so difficult, now i know why. Without guarding, I dodged and weaved every attack, used multiple potions and multiple resets took place to beat this game. It was all worth it in the end. You will always have a special place in my heart YS 7. Thank you for introducing me to such a wonderful series and game genre. -Sincerely, once a kid with the best childhood thanks to YS 7.

I just finished this game and it was absolutely amazing. Especially the story. It was also the first game that gave me an incentive to learn guarding properly. And like my buddy who loves arpgs told me, I indeed felt very accomplished when I finally got the hang of it. Ys 7 was my proper introduction to arpgs and I'm very glad I chose this game. If 9 and 8 are really better as 7 like many people say then after finishing this game, I am very excited to try 8 and 9. But one thing is for sure. After this experience, 7 will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the game that made me an arpg fan after all.

There is one character in Ys 7 that really resonated with me, and it's Mishera, the Wind Eldress. Listening to the theme in the Wind Precincts and then seeing how she has a staff that is very similar to Yuna's staff in Final Fantasy X, she definitely struck me as someone very mystical. I even thought she was going to do a sending dance after you beat the bird boss in the wind temple - so she definitely has all the makings of a summoner although she is classed more as a Seer/Prophetess... and then I sync'd up the Wind Precinct's Theme to Yuna's Sending cutscene in Kilika in FF10 and was like OMG... how did I NOT see this beforehand?!

I played this one digitally on the vita before the PC version released and I must say I love everything about this game except the second half of the story. It's there that you realize than half of your party will never go beyond their first impression and that you're being forced through 6 dungeons just so you can reach a dumb dragon that only speaks in poems and won't tell you anything useful. But as you said, the villains are amazing. You'd think they wouldn't find a way to up the stakes after VI pretty much put the whole planet in danger of flodding but they certainly did.

Although I had fun with Ys Seven, I would say it's my least favourite game in the series barring Ys I. That being said, there were some definite strong points to be had here. Its OST is one of my favourites, I really like Altago as a setting, and it has my favourite story in any Ys game yet despite its party members being rather lacking. And I cannot agree more with you when it comes to the main antagonists, they were definitely one of the game's biggest highlights. Ys SEVEN's main conflict has a LOT of similarities with another Ys game, but I personally prefer how it's executed here. I think Ys Seven is that first game of Falcom on YS that gave us a pretty good plot, but not the best one either. This game has a LOT of reminescence of YS VI and even YS I and II in some of the elements of gameplay such as allowing you to kinda explore where you should not OR not giving you any pointers to where to go, it gives you a general pointer but if you need a key item to get there it won't tell you about it. That freedom makes you backtrack a lot. There's a lot of positives in this game, but even if the plot is way better than any of the Eldeen plot we've got so far, there are some roughness to it, I'm not sure if it's because of cheap translations, sometimes Aisha's dialog feels weird and out of place, another times the peacing feels horrible between dialogues and frankly, people complained about Lacrimosa of Dana poor translations but at least it was fixed there XD
Even if the plot is better than previous Ys's so far and maybe sloppy in translation the ending ALWAYS gets me, which is incredible since I don't think you have enough time to bond with the character that drives that ending like you had with Dana in YS 8. And even so, I'm always fucking crying anytime I play the game.
About the textures, look, this game aged poorly. And the ports for PC from both this game and Memories of celceta DOES FEELS sloppy as hell. I mean, both games you do need to mess a long time with configurations to just make sure the controls works, that's not a good sign, and both games yo need to do a fair bit of work to make the game a little more presentable, because both of them re just, literally, the original versions of the game shoved into a fucking full screen that are at least ten times bigger in resolution than their original platforms, and there's no effort at all from XSEED to try and mitigate that by making sprites to upscale with good quality artwork, but it's possible to mitigate some of it on YS Seven, most of it on Celceta if you don't feel angry at the fact that people from outside the team who ported these games clearly cares more about the game than XSEED.
The OST from YS Seven is awesome, and the gameplay is kinda rough if you compare with other games that followed this system, there's a reason why every heavy character is way faster than Dogi is on YS Seven and why the charge for SP is automatic, the level up mechanics are well, way too much of effort to do so and so far, on normal, this is one of the hardest games ever. Doing a flash guard needs to be abused because doing it only once won't protect you from the consecutive hits, and since being hit after a guard will cause a critical in this game, well you can see what's happening right? xD Even so, this game has a lot of positives going through it. Would it be the first YS I recommend? No, I would probably recommend Memories of Celceta first or YS Lacrimosa of Dana First, depending on how much the person wants to spend on the game, if they chose the first I would also STRONGLY suggest the upscale HD textures made by fans of the game which makes the game goes from 2.5 to whopping 25GB of size but you need to use a texture injector instead of throwing those in the game, but at least the game looks presentable on the big screen since every UI element there looks blurry in th fucking game without it and XSEED fixed it for Ps4 but never fixed it for Pc which makes me feel like I'm being punched in the stomach but that's another issue. XD But I would totally say that even if YS Seven is one of the hardest because of technicalities and bulshit-game design on the final boss (Really, that first phase has the WORST setup of characters with the WORST gimmick of all of the phases, and it's clear once you beat it, that it's the only one that can truly give you any trouble which just makes it feels unbalanced on purpose). Ys Seven tried a lot of new things and old things too, and of the new engine, is the one that makes me remember the older titles the most.
If I should say though, YS seven is the only game in the entire series that I skip every quest possible. I don't know why, but the fact that I need to talk with tons of random NPC to know who wants to give me a quest, all the time, the quests being timed and acquiring certain items are lucky based, the grab items with your party is finicky and the IA will always focus on attacking an enemy they even cannot reach instead of helping you gather the items makes this game quite unenjoyable when it comes to completing it 100%. You can see it's rough around the edges and they fixed most of the issues and almost perfected them in Ys Memories of Celceta and essentially nailed down the system in Ys 8, so much that I'm wondering what they will do with Ys 10, because they reached the pinnacle of what the system can be and feel on Ys IX.
But anyway, don't get me wrong, I love this game, I even had it original for PSP at one point, it's a strong game in the series, it just suffers for the same reason YS VI suffers for being the first game in a new engine, lots of ideas but the refinement came in the sequels. That ending though, it does fills me with FEELS every single freaking time I watch it.
Oh, and one side note: I played Ys Seven in 2012 without knowing about Flash Guard. So yes. I only actually learned about it after playing Memories of Celceta and checking that it existed in Ys Seven XD

I'll be honest this isn't my least favorite ys game but i'd personally rank it low, but doesn't make it bad not in slightest , my issue's with the game are bosses feel a bit too damage spongy at times, dumb AI. but the positives overcome the negatives such as banger music especially that opening, the battle system which holds up well

Ys sounds like a really cool series, but I suck balls at any action games so it isn't for me. But I'm almost done with Sky SC. After that I'll play the 3rd and then it's time for a new PC and Crossbell!

Honestly you could still play this on the easier difficulties. The earlier Ys games are a fair challenge, but Ys Seven onwards strike a good balance for more casual players and those looking for a challenge - try Ys VIII at the very least!

@@TheKisekiNut Agreed. I'm not the best at action games, but Ys VIII is great, even on normal difficulty. It took a little while to get used to the system but once it clicks, combat flows like nothing I've ever played before. Its superb!

@@TheKisekiNut I am back here after playing 4 other Ys games. So far, I've played Ys VIII, Ys I, Ys II and Origin. Currently playing Ys IV. After Ys IV I want to play Felghana. Thankfully there is a very easy difficulty and I can also just grind levels if I get folded. Ys VIII was so much fun with all the exploring. Amd Ys IV too. Mapping the forest is just so much fun. Especially when you roll around through every part of the map. There still the western side but I still need another character to get there. But yeah, Ys games are so much fun. I regret every trying to skip it! Now I await Adols other new adventure for which he apparently learned how to not crash boats. Ys is an amazing series and I love it very much.

Probably my personal least favourite Ys game and even so, I still think it's fantastic. This series is the absolute pinnacle of action game pacing - there's never a moment that feels like padding in this entire series, everything you do feels like progress at all times. I wish other devs would try to learn from these games.

I disagree, ranged characters were handicapped a bit too much. Having no more range than the other characters. It would have made more sense if they had just stuck to the damage type balancing.

Overall not a bad game but for me personally this is the weakest modern Ys game. Celceta has its flaws as well but otherwise many small improvements over Seven.

  • @animeprofilepicture9639

The game is bad imho. Combat is not great, and the story got boring very fast to me.
