Thanks for watching. This Homelite trimmer is cheap but is it worth fixing though?

I never ever question anybody about what they spend on their equipment because that may be all they can afford, but if you drive up to my shop in a $100,000 truck or car and question me about how much it’ll cost to fix their “ cheap “ equipment then you best get in your vehicle and drive off quickly. You can spend that much on your vehicle because you need a reliable one, then you should think the same way when it comes to your equipment. Another bang on video my friend.
you make a good point
I'll stay away from your shop with that attitude.
Thank you for your video I was able to fix my Homelite trimmer that was not starting after 2 years in storage. Took me 20 minutes of my time and no money. Great Saving ☺
Glad it helped
I just got one of these from the garbage, looked almost new. had this same weed wacker maybe two years ago and it worked just as good as a higher end one and was stoked to get this one running up to par. Thank you for sharing this!
no problem and thank you
I have 2 like that just given to me. All they needed was fuel lines and a carburetor cleaning and adjustment
nice, easy money!
My Homelite was a freebee and all it cost to get it going was a new primer bulb and straightening the shaft out where it had been wrapped around a tree. It might've been smaller/cheaper that that one and was older for sure. As long as it does the job. Blessings and happy weekend.
you got that right, and you did an excellent job getting it working!
Wasn't that much wrong with it really.@@HomeGaragechannel
Another good fix. $5 saved $$$ for a new gas trimmer. I was looking for a new gas trimmer and everything I found after going to the 3 big home improvement centers in my area were all electric. I went to a farmer supply and found what I was looking for, but it was very expensive. So I can get the very expensive gas trimmer or the no-name very cheap gas trimmers from online. You will easily make your money and time back from selling it.
I haven't been to the stores lately, I'll have to take a look and see. And yes you're right, I'll get good money for it.
I agree with your comment about keyboard warriors about being forced to repair a carb vs replacing it due to ability levels. Some people might not even have the time, so if it's a carb issue, replacing it is a 5 minute journey. People should be able to do what works best for them and their situation. Which is why I love your channel, you're not telling people what to do, but offering options, and telling them to do what works best for them.
Also agree about ultrasonic cleaners. They take awhile, and I never had any problems using a can of carb cleaner and some manual cleaning.
thank you and you got that right about the cleaner. I used it today and sediment started to build up on the edge of some of the parts in there. I had o clean it with carb cleaner again
Definetly worth the 5 bucks just for the new repair knowledge. Every motors different. Cheers.
thank you!
Thank you. I'm struggling with a Homelite 26CS and your video is very encouraging. New Subscriber to your channel.
Welcome aboard!
@@HomeGaragechannel Thank you! I actually got the Homelite 26CS to run after several years of walking around it in my humble shop.
Another good one there, my friend. As usual, your presentations are very well done and I have learned a ton from you.. I really enjoy your videos so thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
thank you and I appreciate it!
Great video, excellenty narrated ,.clean clear and precise 10/10
Glad you liked it!
It’s always a good idea to fix up a cheap trimmer. I’ve been collecting throw lawn equipment this year. Hopefully I can get to fixing them soon.
agreed!
I really enjoy your vidoes you talk about carbs an the different ways you clean them. Every time I get trimmers or aney thing I ushely just get a new carb I don't have the best luck with cleaning them lol
yes I always recommend on getting a new carb, however if I don't at least try to clean it, I get roasted in the comments for not trying.
Yes I've got 3 just like it. Won't ruin your shoulder joints like heavier brands.
totally agree
Awesome job 👏🏼
Thank you!! 😁
Great job .
thank you!
Like I said in one of your other videos, even though I have my Husqvarna trimmer, I still have my cheap snot green Poulan P1500 trimmer that is basically the same model as that Homelite. Still runs great after all these years. Just feels a little awkward using it with its curved shaft after using the straight shaft Husqvarna. It even has the original fuel lines, carb, and spark plug, and I just had it out back using it a few days ago.
yes the curve shaft is not for everyone, but as a back up, it works out great!
You need to say and show, which lines go where please
Hello.i watch all the videos on youtube about the machines you make. for me it is very interesting to make such machines and i hope someday to do only this work because i like it very much but i need more experience. your videos help me when i watch them
hey I appreciate that and I started out the same way you did, by watching videos
It was definitely worth it. Great video 👍🙏👍🙏
Yes it was!
Gotta love the “air filter “.
I know right
Yes well worth it especially if you get satisfaction and have a win
agreed!
Hey Home Garage, Taryl Fixes All has a new video out today that covers Briggs and Stratton mechanical mower start, which I referred to as kinetic spring start that winds tension when the engine brake is applied. It is indeed a limited alternative instead of the traditional pull rope or electric start. You will finally know what I was trying to describe.
thanks
yes it was most surely worth fixing up that cheap as chips grass trimmer and as for the filter housing assembly i,d simply make a bit of foam to help protect the engine too as those mesh screens are a hazard for it waiting to happen plus dead easy to make etc.
nice thank you!
@@HomeGaragechannel my pleasure mate even i could do that etc.
Great Video! Just wanted to know what did you spray on the body to clean it and then rinse it off. Thanks!
sure thing, I'm using the gallon jug of yellow degreaser from Harbor Freight. It doesn't have a proper name
Capable man.
👍👍
thank you
Home garage those home lites quite finicky with the carburetors I use to have a home lite yard broom leaf blower great machine
yes they certainly can be.
I have this exact trimmer except it has a straight shaft instead of a curved one and I did the exact same repair to it but it needs a new carb and I’m looking to see if I can find one in my country
I hope you can find one,. .
I have an older Homelite that I got at a second hand store for ten bucks. Got on amazon, ordered a new carb for it because I right away found out if didn't even have a gasket between the carb and engine. I spent about 20 bucks to fix it up and it's been running great for four years now. A total of $30.00 bucks or so. I've seen people buy far more expensive trimmers and have nothing but trouble with them. If Stihls are so great, why do you see dozens of videos here in YT on how to fix them? Are Stihls made by Ford or something? You get a cheap Homelite going right, and take only a little care of it and it will just last. You can have your Stihls and other fancy-smancy brands.
it's an issue care of care and use. 2 stroke trimmers don't like to be left alone for long periods. If you use your cheap trimmer every week for years.. and use good fuel, it should last.. But it doesn't matter if you paid $90 or $700 for a trimmer, use bad fuel, and leave it alone for 8 months, and it'll start to have issues.
much better to have correct tool , but i have sawed across those mixture screws , then used flat blade screwdriver .
that works too
Very much worth putting 5 bucks into to get it useable again.
agreed
Just sub today to the channel. This video is what I was looking for. I’m curious though I’ve had one of these trimmers and find that the trimming head spins even at idle. Would I need to adjust the idle screw for this? Also I’ve never given the trimmer a good cleaning is it okay to spray it down with simple green and hose off ? Thanks again for the help
just to make sure that your trimmer has a clutch, with the trimmer OFF, try spinning the trimmer head by hand. If it spins freely, then your trimmer has a clutch and it should NOT be spinning while the engine is idling . I would then turn the idle set screw out until the head stops spinning. I'd clean it the way you mentioned
@@HomeGaragechannel
Thanks for the help I appreciate it
no problem
If it's not a major problem such as a scored cylinder & piston then I wouldn't have a problem spending $5; on fixing it up !
me too
Hi Home Garage i have a stihl fs 450 and the carburetor is leaking gas what could be the problem?
the metering diaphragm could be petrified and making constant contact with needle, or the pumping diaphragm is leaking at the check valve flaps.
when you clean the outside of all the engines do you use normal soap and water?
no I'm using a strong degreaser. I have had minimal luck with soap and water.
I have a homelite timberman 45cc chainsaw i have it running however it does bog down when i squeeze the throttle and i can find any place that carries the carburetor that i need, any suggestions? i just got the saw today for free so that helps
sure, get the carb tool and turn out the L screw a quarter turn and see if it improves.
@@HomeGaragechannel okay will do
I changed my oil in my mower after 2 cuts, will that hurt it or was it a good thing I changed the oil
it won't hurt it.
Have a Homelite weedeater that wouldn't start replaced carburetor, fuel line, fuel filter, spark plug. It started and after shutting it down tried to start it the next day and won't start.
the engine may be flooded, remove the spark plug and leave it in the sun for a couple of hours. Then replace the plug and try starting with no choke and see what happens. If it doesn't start, then follow the starting procedure
Hey bro what's up? This trimmer looks like it would be a good back up trimmer. My only problem is that it has a curved shaft instead of a straight shaft
I know right, eh it's still works though
@@HomeGaragechannel once it can serve its purpose I'm good with it
Hello. I am trying to get a craftsman weed trimmer started. I wanted to ask if it was okay if I used straight gas without the oil mix just to see if it will start before I go spend the money on the mix and another gas can. I will shut it off right when it starts just want to make sure I can at least get it to start.
no I would not do that , I would jut buy a new trimmer
@@HomeGaragechannel buy a new trimmer? Why would I do that. I’m trying to get this one running lol
@@HomeGaragechannel what I’m saying is I have no clue if the trimmer runs. I don’t have a 40:1 mix right now sense I use an electric trimmer. So I’m wanting to at least get the trimmer running before I go buy the mix and and gas can
I think there is a filter that goes in the plastic cover. I have a bollings trimmer (spelling?) that looks like that and foam has a filter in the cover.
if you look up the model and serial number for this trimmer and look at the schematic there is NO, air filter for it.
Why do so many people hate the curved shaft ones? I have one with no problems at all. I just spray lube into the the upper part and the lower part once a year. Good to go.
from what I can tell, it's an issue of height of the user. The other could be an issue with their backs.
hey man i have a question i have this featherlite weed eater that doesn't start the best but still starts but wont idle for long i have tried adjusting the fuel on the carb do you have any ideas? thank you
sure, If you've already tried to adjust the carb, with no luck, then there's a problem with the carb. That means either a rebuild or a replacement is needed.
ok thanks@@HomeGaragechannel
@@HomeGaragechannel i have now checked that and now my spark plug is getting very hot and the engine head is smoking do you have any advice?
Question I have a similar Homelite trimmer and although it has spark it won’t even attempt to start with abit of fuel directly in the cylinder could you tell me what this could mean ?
sure, I would do a compression check. You can have the best spark , and all the fuel going into the engine but if the engine is not able to compress the air, then it won't start or run correctly
@@HomeGaragechannel and is there a way to fix the compression issue on these Homelite trimmers if that does in fact become the problem ?
I have one where the magneto is broken how do you disassembly
remove all the screws holding both front and rear covers and it should expose the engine
@HomeGaragechannel yes I know that but the shaft parts can't seem to work out how to get that off
I have a Murray 2500, new carb and spark plug and no Start still, why?
have you done a compression test on it?
@@HomeGaragechannel that's next step cause I haven't done compression test
@@HomeGaragechannelwhat it was the improper plug and connection
Also what would happen if you started a old engine but it has problems and it has a new problem it leaks the fuel and oil mixture on the floor dose that means the engine does work but with more problems because I have a 1944 generator I gave up fixing it and I thought it was so bad of a problem but it was the spark plug and the thing that is attached to the spark plug
I'd need to know more about the generator first
Homelite a division of Textron Jacobson lawn care equipment company
yes they are
@@HomeGaragechannel I looked them up and they are now owned by a different company now at one time they were owned by John Deere then someone else bought them from John Deere
thanks for checking
@@HomeGaragechannel your welcome h.g
What was the most funny problem story about the engine or problem or they used it for something that it was not meant for
to be honest I don't really have a story like that. Most just didn't start, or somehow it broke on them but nothing too strange.
is homelite good
I think they're fine too.
How to remove the cover from the engine
that would take a video to show.
Need magneto name and part number
not without model and serial number of the machine you're working on

Is your rejuvenation bath a super secret to you or are you willing to share what it is? No worries if you would like to keep it secret, I totally understand.
oh I share it all the time to those that ask, it's brake fluid
@@HomeGaragechannel Thanks man!
no problem
For me, it is worth it only to flip it. I wouldn't want that trimmer and would have just passed on it. While that one was an easy fix, investing more money in it, if it needed more work than you did, would make it not worth the risk for me to pick it up. It is one thing to overspend on a repair if you're fine with it not selling and keeping it, but it is another if you don't at all want to keep that machine.
I hear what you're saying. Money is money
