      Michael Eisner almost killed this film. If you watch Defunctland's episode on Michael Eisner (forgot what the video was called), Eisner was so against this film and Johnny Depp's character but the producers did not back down and stood their ground to finish making this masterpiece of a film.

    The true story behind the Pirates score is amazing. At first, Alan Silvestri was hired by the director Gore Verbinski but Jerry Bruckheimer wanted to go in a different direction (less traditional, more rock n'roll), so Badelt was brought on (one of Zimmer's protégés) and Zimmer wrote the main "he's a pirates" tune. This is all just in the middle of when Zimmer and his team was in production for the The Last Samurai and Ridley Scott's Matchstick Men scores. They had only a few weeks to do the score before the movie had to be delivered, so there were lots of composers brought on to do heavily lifting. Anyone who worked on the music team for the Pirates movies always talk about how insane they were. I know for Pirates 3, there were like 8-10 different composers writing music for it, aside from Zimmer, and Bruckheimer is super involved in the music too. Iconic scores though, 100%.

    • @15Candles
      @15Candles Před 10 měsíci +22

      Apparently for the first movie, Zimmer hired composers such as Ramin Djawadi, James Dooley, Nick Glennie-Smith, Steve Jablonsky, Blake Neely, James McKee Smith, and Geoff Zanelli to worked with him on the score because of the tight schedule he has

    • @spencercreaghan6579
      @spencercreaghan6579 Před 10 měsíci +11

      All of this is true! HZ couldn’t do the film bc he was contractually bound to the Last Samurai at the time. When Bruckheimer came calling with the SOS, Zimmer write a theme suite in one night and his team fleshed it out throughout the film. Everyone did handful of cues and I believe Klaus got the credit because in the he did more cues than the others. The majority of the music is based on Hans’s suite so one could argue the music is still by Hans Zimmer, wotu arrangements by the Remote Control productions team :) Great score regardless!

      @seanwilson4350 Před 10 měsíci +2

      Alan Silvestri was reputedly kicked off the score because Jerry Bruckheimer disliked the 'traditional' tone that favoured organic instruments like woodwinds. Bruckheimer also favoured Zimmer because of their past relationship. I would have loved to have heard Silvestri's work on this series (although he later came good with the Marvel movies).

    • @AshtonGleckman
      @AshtonGleckman Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@seanwilson4350Apparently Silvestri never got past 1M1 (the first scene in the film). Silvestri had worked with Verbinski on his last movie and I think Bruckheimer, who's obviously a huge force, wanted to go in a different direction especially because of his long-running relationship with Hans. Lots of business drama but of course turned out great.

    Curse of the Black Pearl was probably the first film I ever watched, I was born in 05 and when I was a little Kid I was constantly nagging my parents to put the “Jack Sparrow DVD” on which is what I used to call it. This movie will forever hold a place in my heart and Johnny Depp has been my No.1 hero ever since.

We both loved it so much we took the whole family the next day and it has been a family fave ever since. That opening scene with Jack Sparrow riding the sinking ship, it was just amazing. Who knew at the time that it was a metaphor for the future of the series. The original still holds true though and Its in my collection :)
    To recommend some older pirate movies just cause. The Crimson Pirate, The Flame and the Arrow (both Burt Lancaster) and Captain Blood (Errol Flynn). I think there are nods to all of these classics in The Black Pearl. Especially The Crimson Pirate.

    You going to review Sound of Freedom? Or will you stay silent on the matter too?

    I have a request. First off, awesome video and happy to see an "older" movie review on the channel! As my favorite CZcams movie reviewer and in honor of the 20th year anniversary, I formally request that you remake videos about The Lord of the Rings films. They are by far my favorite movies of all time and arguable the best trilogy of all time. I would love to hear some updated commentary of your thoughts of the films. Maybe even going into the shoot techniques now that you have experience making your own movie. You speak so passionately about film and I feel it would be an amazing blend with LOTR! Be well!

    Hey Chris, I am one of your older fans, Love your passion about film. As a kid I went to the movies maybe twice a week. I went when a new movie was playing. Often I didn't know what I was seeing. Back then they had a children's section, no adults. We behaved because there was a uniformed matron. It was another time and world back then. I just turned 80, have never lost my love of the movies. I have a collection of almost 400 films. my apartment is filled with movie posters. I actually was commissioned to do one. (I was an illustrator) 1972 Godzilla on Monster Island. Even got a private screening. Back to you, I wish when I was young I knew someone with your passion. All the best Chris, keep going, look forward to your movie. Bob501
