In this video I head out with Andrew Beavers for 3 days hiking & 2 nights wild camping in the Peak District National Park. Our aim is to complete the Derwent Watershed Hike which is a 40 miles circular hike over rock, moorland and hills of the dark peak area of the park. It was tough going but well worth the effort.

Stop being so hard on yourself Paul Messner. You are never too old to do these multi day hikes. And the more you do, the fitter you get and the easier they feel. Big respect to you pal, I hope it gives you confidence to do some more in future my friend. Keep up the great content

I don't remember pauls channel being about multi hiking? It was about him doing a cheeky overnighter and the kit he took with him in a beautiful location. Or at least from what I always remember his channel. Multi day hiking i cant think of anything more boring personally.

My last proper backpacking trip was in 2017, the year I turned 50. Later that year, I developed arthritis in my knees, which brought my hiking days to an end. Or did it? I've been slowly building back, and your videos have been an inspiration. Heading out this weekend, actually.

You're too hard on yourself, good sir. It's ok to not be as fast as the others in the group. Pushing yourself to keep up only turns into no fun experience for you or an injury along the way. Take it easy.
Me and my friend started going on walks every weekend and walks have now turned into hikes. We do it for our fitness but also because of how good it feels to manage such enormous accomplishments. We are no athletes and take our time but we get there. You are truly inspirational, humble and simply lovely to watch. You've shared some great advice and tips for our own hikes and what kit to bring with us. Keep doing what you're doing. You're brilliant!

Taking on a multi day hike after not doing one for a while can be exhausting. The feeling of accomplishment when you're done is so good! It might feel difficult while in the process of completing the trip, but at the end of the day you won't regret stepping up to the challenge.
I live in the US, but I love watching your videos because I enjoy seeing terrain in other parts of the world that I've never explored before. So interesting to see the characteristics of the land, and geology in this District. I have never hiked in an area where there's domestic sheep just hanging out with you! Not only am I enjoying what you share in your videos, it's actually been fascinating to see this part of the world from a hiker's perspective.

Hey Paul, if you're struggling with knee pain with these hikes it may be that your glutes are a bit weaker/inactive but age may certainly play a role. I find that doing light glute exercises *regularly* like reverse lunges or glute bridges takes the stress away from the knees and loads the weight onto your glutes/hips instead. Hope that might be helpful!

Being short and stocky myself, I always was jealous of the tall guys in my unit with their long legs. A 35 mile hump with packs and gear was a stroll for them, while I literally jogged the entire way. No sympathy in the Marines though, you're there, you do it and congratulate yourself upon completion. You're doing and have done what a large percentage of the other hikers/campers haven't, and you tacked on a few more miles running up and down for your camera. You deserve two beers!

With all those unnecessary cairns there I would say that it is messy. So much for leaving the place as you found it. You are being to hard on your self Paul. I'm 74 and still out there in the mountains of NZ climbing up to 2000 M with 20 kg. Not bragging just saying age is not a barrier, go at your own pace. I've slowed down a bit over the years, but what I have got is stamina, and I watch the young ones burn them selves out before we get to the tops. Where it would take me 8 hours to my destination, it now takes 9 hours, so what !! I still get there. There will of course be lots of 'huffing and puffing' but that is all part of the trip. I have rambled on a bit ( no pun intended). Just keep on doing it mate, go at your own pace, Cheers from NZ

No two humans are the same. Even at my most fit, I had trouble with inclines. (Having come from flat land, maybe not surprising) I could run, bike, cross-train-but put me on a steel hill and it was huffing and puffing all the way. The older I get the more I realize that it’s the journey-not the pace. It’s not a race. There will always be someone faster, fitter, better-SO WHAT! You did it! We always used to walk behind our slowest on our yomps. The person will still do their best, probably better as their soul isn't as destroyed. (you can always push a bit if time is tight etc) but afterall if you're all together then that's how it should be and planned as such time wise. Small tip, neither of you use your walking poles efficiently either accending or descending. Definitely something to look into.

Good to see Beavo putting you through your paces Paul, looked a good backpacking trip. C'mon the slabs. 😜 Can you see yourself doing more long distance stuff?

In Australia a "slab" is a box or carton of 24 beer cans. Something to think about when you're complaining about slabs. 🙂

      @@landzender that's a decent slab mate. 🍻

Another great video, Paul. What a great hike and well done for sticking it out!
So far I've only actually managed to get one-nighters in but hoping to get a two-nighter sorted a bit later this year. Hoping to make it in winter. I'm in Australia, so tentatively planned for August.
I don't think I'm even remotely aiming for 40 miles at the moment though! haha.
