  • So society is crumbling, there's limited access to fossil fuel, there's chaos in the streets, but you happen to have some flour and baking soda and a solar cooker. You can easily make homemade ramen noodles without any fossil fuel.
I used to think of ramen noodles as a low quality convenience food. Still I depended on them back in college and I still love a doctored up packet of fancy ramen noodles from the asian grocery from time to time. But ramen noodles are very popular in Japan, and as with many Japanese things, they have taken it to a level of artisan perfection. You can pretty easily make your own ramen noodles. In this video, I show you how I make ramen noodles without any fossil fuel inputs, using only the power of the sun.

Here's the recipe for the ramen noodles I make in this video:
4 cups organic all purpose unbleached flour or semolina flour
    1.25 cups water
2 tsp baked baking soda (sodium carbonate)
    1 tsp salt

Those look so tasty! I wonder if gluten-free flour could be substituted 🤔

@@mellorahall5522 You'd have to work on a recipe. I don't think it would technically be ramen then, since ramen is made with wheat flour. But maybe the kansui will work the same with other flours though.

Sodium carbonate is called washing soda, and you can buy it online. I use it to make my own laundry detergent. I also use it for cleaning.

"I'm not going to make them an art form", then goes on to absolutely make them an art form. Superb video.

I wonder if that kind of noodle could be dried in the solar oven and rehydrated later like the store ramen packets.

Hey Dan, this was such a great video. I love how you treated this as an experiment with the end resulting in a yummy bowl(s) of ramen. Homemade ramen. Thanks for creating such great content and tying it all together at the end with examples of how taking small steps can lead to educating others. Love it!

Thanks so much for the research and explanation about baking soda conversion. That is so powerful to have in my cupboard! I haven't finished my solar cooker, but chickens arrive tomorrow, so next week I'll be setting up solar oven. As always, perfect video.

here is an informative video about the oupple that i mentioned in Arequippa. i find it very helpful in distilling the reasons for living there. i also looked up info about your questions. there is no restriction on foreigners buying land anywhere except the borders. i am trying to research info about the outlying locals attitude toward foreign "investment's so far no info. again everything that i see about the climate is almost mind blowing. 300 + days of sun a year for solar. average temp year round 74-78 f, humidity 10% average. i found one parcel of farm land that edges on one of the snow run off rivers, the river is advertised as pollution free. (there are no cites or industries along the run offs from the volcanos. only thing is the price was astronomical. i wonder if it is a mistake in conversion rate. hope i'm not bugging you about this and if so i'd be happy to write anyone else who is interested. of course there is the old adage if it sound to good to be true it probably is. i plan to go there in the near future for a visit. i discovered an email for the Fandrich Expedition and i will thy that. i also equate the end of the world with ramen status so good research!

That sounds like an ideal place, but I'm sure that's why it's so expensive. Probably a good idea to visit and check it out. Good luck with contacting those other folks.

Hi Dan,Im new to your channel, love what you are doing. I live on a mobile home park in the uk,been here a year and Ive completely transformed my plot since moving in. I now have 8 raised beds and managed to get a 10 x 6 greenhouse on here too, I'm also almost plastic free. I love the idea of solar panels but we arent allowed to have them here :/ we are a little restricted but I'm doing my best!! Looking forward to the next video, take care :)

    • @HardcoreSustainable
      @HardcoreSustainable  Před 3 lety

Wow, how can they not let you have solar panels in the UK? I thought you were more forward thinking than the US as far as climate change.
I don't know if you listen to Gardener's Question Time but it's one of my favorite podcasts.
Sounds like you are doing what you can there despite unfortunate code. Good luck and thanks for watching!

@@HardcoreSustainable You can get a grant I think for Solar panel, but it's for brick houses not glorified shed's. I think it's to do with aesthetics, different parks have different rules. I'll check that out, thanks Dan :)
