  • Solar cooking is easy in the summer when the sun is directly overhead. This plastic vinyl sheet has a focal length exceeding 3000mm and produces temperature in excess of 1400˚ F or 760˚ C.

    I'm a big fan of your water lens! I've done it on a much smaller scale with a picture frame and some saran wrap, but never tried cooking with it ;) Nice work Denise!

    Hi Sean,
    The material will fill with rainwater. The last one filled to over 100 gallons before the material tore. While the vinyl is rated as UV resistant it tends to get damaged from 5+ months of exposure. I usually just siphon the water off. This only works in the summer as the sun is lower during other times of the year. Fiber optics do not transfer the light efficiently enough to produce usable heat. I will be making larger fibre in a future video.

    Thank you for the idea. We will do it but not with the water lens as the sun has already made it's move to the south an the focal point is off axis so it would need to me next summer. We have gotten 87" of rain this year so the solar projects have been cloaked by clouds. Denise will be making some videos real soon:-)

    It always amazes me when I remember the energy source is 8 light minutes away! We, as a species, must become solar users to the max! Imagine if the entire global populace came together and designed ta world wide solar grid! The only times power might be hindered due to cloud cover would easily be handled through other alternative energy like hydro, geo-thermal and wind. This water lens is a great example of the awesome power of our sun!

    Do the results of solar power usage vary for areas of different elevation? I would initially think that Phoenix would make a great place for experimenting, yet I wonder if high-elevation mountains would have better results because of the altitude and thinner air.

    I saw you do this a month or so ago & recently tried to use it in a fun cooking competition. It was a major fail because I used the wrong plastic, a plastic bag from a new mattress. I had it duct taped to a metal dog kennel pipe frame & the sun's heat allowed the tape to slip and the ray barley got warm before it became elongated and useless. Had to finish the food on charcoal :( Wish I had taken my time & planned this out better. Now, my wife thinks I'm a real boob. Trying again.

  • @conicEllipse
    @conicEllipse Před 11 lety

    Cool video, guys. Perhaps you could put a 1/4" or 1/2" sheet of metal underneath the pan big enough to shine the light on and leave room for the pan (so the pan is not in the light.) The steel metal plate would absorb all the light/heat. The pan would get the heat from the steel metal plate that it is resting on instead of a direct hot spot. It would be a little less efficient, but the heat would be spread more evenly, maybe?
    Looks like Denise has lost some more weight. No bloopers at the end?

  • @Mileslegends5359
    @Mileslegends5359 Před 11 lety

    Perhaps for cooking you could place a small, raised, circular sheet of dark metal inside a larger skillet so the cooking items will be equally spaced and out of the focused sunlight.

    Why does the plastic not melt?

  • @TheSunergizer
    @TheSunergizer Před 11 lety

    Solar One in California uses molten Salt to store heat to keep the generator running 24 hours.
    In my eye, I see a metal barrel with insulation and molten Lead. Run a copper pipe through it to bleed off heat into steam and then use said steam for a steam engine turning a generator.
    I use Lead as an example. It's cheap and hot enough to make steam. But lower than your 1400 F hot spot. Maybe another metal will be more suitable.

    If the energy was focused onto a thick slab of iron it would conduct into a skillet just as a stove top burner does. If the light struck the iron for some time before time to cook something it would probably be quite hot for a long time
