It was nice meeting you, I'm glad you're happy to review my car.
Now if only I can get him to review my 1998 manual transmission Nissan Sentra... 😂
Nice whip, my best friend has a 2003 mazda 3 that is in much lower condition
Definitely a car you dont see everyday anymore so thats cool but id really think about getting that rust repaired on the passenger rear quarter and rocker pannel and anywhere else it seems like a good running car but that rust is gonna start to be an issue really soon.
@@SAMPLETEXT285it’s 98… it is what it is arc this point.
My sister had a 98 Protege with an automatic as her 1st car. Wasn’t a bad car. Unfortunately, it got totaled. She’s now on her 2nd Mazda3 and I’m on my 2nd Miata as well as a Mazda6. We love our Mazdas!❤
I had the 99 version as my first car.
This is my kind of car-cheap, efficient, and reliable small manual cars.
My wife had a 96 LX. It felt like a FWD sports car in the corners. In off the line acceleration, that 1.5L engine felt faster than its 90 something horsepower. But hit the corners and the car comes alive. Wish I could have driven the Protege ES which came with the Miata 1.8L, larger rims and tires, and a sport tuned suspension.
Ah man...the '98 Protege you reviewed looks so much like the '94 Mazda Protege I bought brand new and drove for 26 years/186,282 miles. I wish car makers would still do as an option as they had in the '90s...create a low-cost entry-level car with a manual transmission. The Nissan Versa is the last holdout of this category, and the CVT's will probably be the only option in that car in a year or two. The A/C cost a lot to keep working on my Protege, so I stopped fixing the A/C after the first 10 years. Otherwise, it was a solid runner. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Zack. :)
I had a 97 mazda protege and absolutely LOVED it! The thing got me through my first few years in college before unfortunately being totaled by a drunk driver. After this I went to a 09 Corolla that had manual windows, locks, no cruise control, etc and it made me miss the power features of the protege lol.
We've had Mazda's for 49 years. 60's and 70's Mazda's were the pick but still good until the early 90's IMO.
Damn good cars especially using in cities.
My wife's first car was a 1995 Protege LX (the same generation as this one). It was a good little car. Unexciting (especially with the automatic) but it got great fuel economy and never left either of us stranded. It met its untimely end when I was rear-ended (sitting at a red light) and an SUV's front bumper decided to reclaim the space normally used for the Protege's rear beam axle. As for my wife; she's been loyal to Mazda. Started with a Protege, then a first-gen 3 hatchback, and now a CX-5.
Known in several markets as the 323. There was also a 323F, a hatchback/wagon, depending on how you look at it (it's pretty long for a compact hatchback). Where I live, the 323F is more common, often used as taxis (an upgrade over the usual MK3 VW Golfs that are normally used).
The 323F is so cool. The BG gen 323F was a 4 door hatchback with pop ups, and the last gen 323F was the wagon wich is the most common 323 variant in Croatia
When I was in middle school (Grade 7-9) one of my teachers had a 7th gen Protege and the other teacher had a 9th gen Protege. 1992 and 1999, respectively. The 9th gen Protege was such a sharp, sporty looking car, especially in black with manual transmission.
I owned a 97 LX years ago, and was very happy with the vehicle. It was much more engaging than the Civic, Corolla, or Focus were at that time.
Love how beautiful the simplicity is of this car
I absolutely love your videos. Mazda really changed the game in 03-04 with the introduction of the mazda3 and mazda6. I have a 2010 Mazda 3 which I love, I have no plans on buying a new car any time soon but when I do it’ll definitely be a Mazda.
Agreed, I have a 2005 3 hatch and the only car I want to replace it with is the same car with about 200,000km less. It ticks every single box for us
My friends Grandpa drives a 91 323 sedan, he bought it new in 1991 in Austria. I love taht little car, its in decent shape only the paint is a bit rotted out and he tor up the headliner a bit but overall its really good. That car is why i fell in love with mazdas and the BG gen of 323 is certantly my favourite mazda ever
My neighbor had 1999 lx automatic transmission with 98,000 miles before she sold it. She tried bribing me to mow and snow removal for her I contact my parents about it She told me not to let them know. Also, I avoided her at all times.
3:43 That A/C button looks sussy.
I owned one... 1997, white, SE, manual, super basic... from 80K to 230K km... (50K to 140K miles). Loved it. Super fuel efficient, comfy, spacious...
We had a mazda Protege too, It was a fun car, We sold it at 250k miles or around there. Its reliable but it can rust; my Protege was a rust bucket, especially in Minnesota.
I just miss when not all cars were trying to be luxurious and the seats weren’t rock hard!
You know what's cool about manual windows?? They dont break...
Funny how an inline 6 used to mean you had the base engine. Now it's a bragging point for "luxury" vehicles worthy of a fender badge.
Inline engines are also on average more reliable....(not counting BMW). We need the return of the Straight Eights!
I own a 2003 protege5 with manual transmission. A fun car and gets compliments. Get your hands on one if you can
Easily the best looking of all Proteges.
I hope you do a review of a manual Protege5 soon. Best car I ever owned
My first car 🥺
Can’t wait to see a Mazda protégé5 (wagon)
I have a protege. BJ model. It has this weird plaque on it that says Mazdaspeed.. Whatever that means 🤷♂️
Mazdas peed?
I had a 3 as well with the 2.3. A 2007 S. I desperately miss that car.
Magnificent video sir.
One of these was at my former shop. We had to do a state inspection on it. It's was in fantastic shape and only had 90k miles. The dude wanted to sell it to me but I couldn't justify it cause my Mazda 3 is much faster, bigger and better looking. And also newer. The only downside with mine is it has 100k more miles then that guys.
I had a 2000 Protégé as my first car. Had a 1.6l engine with about 110hp and a 4 speed automatic. Was not fast but it was reliable. It had manual windows but came equipped with AC. You really felt the loss of power when turning the Ac on . All in all it was a good car and was very cheap to buy
I wish you could find a Mazda Millenia to review. 2015 wasn't the first year Mazda tried to go premium. back in the early 90s, mazda tried to develop their own luxury brand to compete with lexus and infiniti called amati. But due to the economy crashing in the early 90s in Japan, Amati never came into fruition. But they did develop one car, which ended up being the Mazda Millenia. The car was supposed to be more luxury oriented, compared to its other models. Now Mazda is doing the same thing without creating a new brand
Wasn’t the Mazda 929 suppose to be a luxury sedan as well?
There was also the Eunos brand and Eunos Cosmo, but they were half-attempts. Either making something new or just making one car nice. Post 2015, Mazda is trying to make ALL their cars up scale. Standard leather on mazda3 hatches, turbo options on everything but the MX-5, etc.
@@greatvaluechoppedonions8130 the 929 predates the Millenia or the Amati brand. It was their version of the Toyota Cressida which that car predates Lexus
@@ShootingCars they also had xedos and efini
I also think that the 626 was kind of bit upscale as well in my opinion
The Ford Escort from the 90s was in fact based on the previous generation car haha so it should drive similar.
Yes,second gen North American Ford Escorts & Mercury Tracers were based on Maza 323s.
Am i the only one who thinks the back tail lights design looks like the FD RX7?
Like come on guys !
Reminds me of my 98 Mazda 626
And to be honest, as mucha as your bottle test if funny, no car from that era was ever conceived to welcome that size of bottle.
2:40 Lol..."Escort influence". Other way around.
I have a 1993 323F BG, funny to see parts that they reused , like the shift knob and pedals.
I had one in the 2000’s and it was a work hourse
Cool😀
Does anyone know the name of the radio featured in the protege in this video?
mazdaspeed familia looks good tho
That car was called the Mazda etude in South Africa 🇿🇦
Do you want to do a review on a 2nd generation honda Odyssey.
Hope you get to review the 323 and the GLC
In Europe the GLCs & Protogés were badged as 323s...same cars. We also got the more coupé-like 323F in Europe.
Mazda 323F crying in the background.
But I’m watching this on my tablet 😂😂
Mazda attidude the was even a wagon available on the facelift
Is it safe to assume that the timing belt is original?
Owner here, the timing belt was replaced per Mazda's maintenance schedule.
Wanna review a Mazda Millenia?
I do! You can submit a car here: Zackpradel.com/submit
Those were not great cars... They were called here the 323 and the Lantis... Here they were sold if im not mistaken with the 1.8 and auto boxes... Much better equipped than this one though... This is a very budget version... The next gen of those was much better... 99-04ish... Including the facelift in in 01 if im not mistaken... The BK 3s that started in 03, sucked imho... Shape was great, but everything inside sucked really bad... Stiff, cheap, bad plastics etc... Horrible factory head and tail lights... Water used to get into each and one of those...
I see an automatic transmission as a downgrade.
@@fortheloveofnoise Agree to disagree... I dont see any advantage today for the regular Joe schmoe in manual box... Uncomfortable in dense traffic, uncomfortable in city and just in general uncomfortable... I understand that some folks like the manual labour, but it's just becoming more and more irrelevant with each passing day... Even my father who is very old school in his opinions on automotive technology, wants to move to automatic, because the manual becomes more and more difficult for him to deal with in his day to day delivery job...
