@Frank Sparks So true, 30,000 years of human history and it all repeats itself over and over, the technology is irrelevant, it's all the same thing over and over.

The soothsayer in this scene is actually my mom. Rhoda Levantis. She was not an actress. She was the switchboard operator at CFTO studios in Toronto where the movie was filmed. The director saw her in the lobby and went to the president of the studio and said she had to be in the movie. (I guess she looked like what he wanted for that extra part). That was her one and only acting job. But her picture was in a magazine(not sure what one it was) and she talked about it until she passed away in 2018. For me it’s nice to know her image will live on for years to come. 🥲

This is why the illegal downloading of copyrighted content, especially entertainment content, has not gone away and has only increased, though it does drive down the cost of streaming services to make those services a more attractive option (ease and convenience). It is necessary for consumers to be bombarded with content, images, ideas, distractions. If they are willing to pay for the distraction, all the better. But if they're not willing to pay directly, they still need to be encouraged to participate in the distractions. Consumers who download content "illegally" still pay. They pay for for computer hardware, some software (perhaps), a VPN service, etc. But they also pay by willingly being part of the distractions, desiring them. Perhaps this is the biggest price, to feel that one's desires are satiated to the point where there is little desire for political involvement. Does the oligarchy know the correct balance of "bread and circuses" to keep this ship of fools ambling on, or is the ship headed towards some kind of collision?
My absolute favourite film. More relevant now than when it was made, in ‘76. Or maybe it’s just there are certain universal truths the writer (Paddy Chayefsky) has tapped into. This film is a brutal antidote to the mass psychosis of American consumerism and mass conformity and bland uniformity.
The sadness in all of this is that what Howard Beale says in this scene, relates to what Cable is truly about today! Everything is a distraction to keep most people uninformed and dumbed down !
This film scared the shit out of me when I saw it when I was 9. I had no idea it would be even more true now. The death of individual thought, if something doesn’t fit into the current sensitivities it gets pulled off the shelves, or removed. When the rumor of a act can cause someone to lose everything before due process.
2022 We are living this movie, right now. Think about WEF. It has begun. So, I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell: ‘I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not gonna take this anymore!’
This is one of the most brilliant scenes ever written. This is the first truthful exposure of the media I encountered. Unfortunately we didn't listen to the message because the mainstream media did fall into the wrong hands.
2:32 - 2:46 the most prophetic piece of scripted dialogue ever written in regards to media. This movie is a satire on tv broadcasting but I'll be damned if those words didn't come true in real life. Corporate media gives us our news and boy there's some politically biased shit being "peddled for truth" on their networks. Now we watch news with some caution and skepticism .....sad.
+ReeseMac Ain't that the goddamn truth in the whole godless world. That Paddy Chayefsky was a genius. The film is one of the greatest dystopian dramas ever, despite the fact that it's not a dystopian film.
You're almost there. Don't blame the "corporate media" - they do what they are designed to do - deliver eye-balls to advertisers for profit - it's the individual choice made that does the damage, watching TV, making a life-style out of "boredom-killing" via passive, steady, all consuming "entertainment" addiction. It's us, not them.
I'm directing my aim more so at the news. You can't not "blame the corporate media". It's like having a drug epidemic in your community and saying 'Don't blame the drug dealer or kingpin. Blame the addict.' They're misleading people with bias news thereby undermining the integrity of their own profession. A profession that once had greater integrity; it was more trustworthy in the past. People today have become more & more aware and are becoming less trustworthy of corporate news today. News should be objective. Not bias.
The trouble with that line of thinking is it erroneously assumes that all "corporate media" act in concert which in fact they do not - if by "corporate media" you mean commercial news channels. In fact there are practically an infinite number of ever-changing and competing sources from every corner of the globe representing almost every point of view imaginable. There is no "they" in that sense. People, just like you and me choose to tune in to the sources they find most appealing and come out with basically what they went in for which in most cases is entertainment, some information, or as Beale says boredom killing. I don't think we need a "it's like" analogy, the subject is analyzable on its own. I get my news from a variety of competing and often conflicting channels forming my evolving opinions based on a number of factors. There is no conspiracy. There is a free-press, at least in most of the West. There is mostly chaos and conflict and confrontation as well as cooperation. People are responsible for their own choices and the outcomes. That's the point of his speech, If you don't want to be informed or told what to think exclusively by CNN or Fox or The New York Times they can go to RT or Al Jazeera or BBC or the Washington FreeBeacon, watch The News Hour or C-Span for informed discussion programs with experts that often disagree, or any number of a million other sources and channels and get the mix they look for from El Mundo to Ha'arretz to the Bangkok Post in a nearly endless, varied and always changing landscape, from the AP to Bloomberg to Reuters, I do it all the time so I think I know. Looking angrily for scapegoats is easy but fruitless, Beale is addressing the audience as free agents capable of making their own decisions. He's reminding them. That's his point, he's not blaming the "corporate media" or assuming people are powerless pawns being led around by powerful, evil, cooperating entities. It's a warning not to voluntarily surrender responsibility for your own mind. Thanks for reading. ;)
bigrobtheactor Yes I am referring specifically to FOX News & MSNBC and , yes, I'm well aware and understand that aspect of his speech on audience culpability (It's very hard for anyone to miss) but just because I did not type a remark about that part doesn't mean that I didn't see it or understand it to the point where a CZcamsr has to point it out to me as if I needed it broken down. So I am "there". I just didn't TYPE about audience culpability. I typed about what he said between 2:32 - 2:46 . How ironic that back then it seemed far fetched where as today it has unfortunately come to fruition. ((( My essential sentiment is--->There should be no news channels, especially those that claim to be "fair & balanced", presenting biased and propagandized news information to the public. Even more so when you consider the fact that the actor who played Howard Beale (Peter Finch) actually did collapse and die of a heart attack in real life shortly after this film's release.
Funny thing, is that this guy, he himself and his ideas turned into an amusement instrument, it's paradojic and funnier because its even in a movie, a movie that amuse our boredom.
This is so true. I imitated what i saw on TV my entire life and it got me into so much trouble, from not having friends to getting fired from two jobs. This is madness. There should be a disclaimer on TV shows that says "For entertainment purposes only", or simply put it like he says turn off the TV and leave it off.
When this movie came out in 1976, it was truly ahead of it's time. This is why the Late Great Peter Finch won the Oscar for "Best Leading Actor"(The first in Oscar history to win an award posthumously in an acting category), Faye Dunaway won for "Best Leading Actress", and another woman won for "Best Supporting Actress". Compared to how television was back then to how it is now, it was tame, especially with the Internet, so-called "reality TV", and other things, just imagine if "Howard Beale" was to come back today with one of his fire and brimstone "I told you so monologues", when you think about it, he proved his point by what I just said.
I think John Mayer put it best. "And when you trust your television What you get is what you got Cause when they own the information, oh They can bend it all they want"
I dedicated a house track to this movie and sampled Beale's "mad as hell" speech, which is on my channel called Get Mad. It's not for everyone, but I'm sure some of you will like it.
A great film way ahead of its time. I notice it's not aired much anymore. Also, it's hard to find for purchase. Odd coincidences or maybe the powers don't want us thinking too much. This and Captain America-The Winter Soldier are dangerous films. Dangerous to the upper echelons, their flunkies, and the masses of sheeple who'll be forced to finally think.
I guarantee if you free these slaves they will kill you and the want the chain back (tv, sports, drugs, advertising, school, false prophets) freedom takes guts
I refuse to buy a television for many of the same reasons mentioned in this GREAT speech--that and the fact that I refuse to pay for cable ( the HAMSTER WHEEL OF ENTERTAINMENT )
Probably the most sober segment of this movie; yes, overall it's a dark comedy of sorts, but this is the point, where what he's saying is sober, pure truth, for any who would heed it...not for just the studio audience in this movie, but for anyone watching this movie; even you and I.
Has the internet become the next TV?? I think this depends on what you read/watch on the internet. Certainly the internet has provided for more opinions and ideas to be expressed.
I didn't see this movie when it came out but I do recall at age 11 (around 1980) that there was something strange about the morning talk shows. How they would push (promote) the latest "clothing trends" and that people (some, not all) would just accept it. And the trend being pushed would change and people wouldn't question why. I didn't realize this would someday be the people we now call sheep. Then, in the 1990s, I noticed how all 3 of the major newscasts (ABC, NBC and CBS) would report the same exact stories, verbatim. In the same exact order. You couldn't find a news report that went against the associated press. It couldn't have been a coincidence, it was of course, orchestrated. Now ask yourself, why would the associated press want to control all the news reports and what is in it for them. CIA project mockingbird people. We've all been taken for fools. 🤨 Time to wake up and get out of the fog they have tried to imprison us with.

I refuse to buy a television for many of the same reasons mentioned in this GREAT speech--that and the fact that I refuse to pay for cable ( the HAMSTER WHEEL OF ENTERTAINMENT )
you had me the whole way and i nodded approvingly at a bugs life, excellent comment
This is how people are living in FEAR about this virus.
substitute "television" with "twitter".
And now we have You...Tube
Replace tube/television with social media here and you’ve got today’s world.
It’s both. Boomers love their Tv programs.
Probably the most sober segment of this movie; yes, overall it's a dark comedy of sorts, but this is the point, where what he's saying is sober, pure truth, for any who would heed it...not for just the studio audience in this movie, but for anyone watching this movie; even you and I.
Love it!
Life is like a Hollywood movie, except the bad guys win. This is not a Hollywood movie.
YES YES YESSSSSSSSSS!!
Nicely done!
Now the "Tube" is Social Media... nobody watches TV anymore
RIGHT.
Bravo good sir.
He's right!!!
Hallelujah! A truer statement could not have been said if it came from the Bible itself!
The Revolution will be televised! and I'm mad as hell and i'm not going to take it any more...ahrgh.
Has the internet become the next TV?? I think this depends on what you read/watch on the internet. Certainly the internet has provided for more opinions and ideas to be expressed.
Such Truth!
I remember saying this is "this is sick" when the crowd chanted what was a battle cry to the voiceless to a catchphrase that they put on a T Shirt
Here in 2021 I can’t help but think this is as prevalent currently as it was when made, makes ya think bout things.
Time to wake up and get out of the fog they have tried to imprison us with.
This is what I'm telling people now, TURN IT OFF. No fear, no virus if you simply turn the damn TV off.
just perfect text!
