Jeez, I've seen Network ten thousand times, I got total chills rewatching that scene right now, out of context. What an actor, holy smokes. (And what a movie, for that matter, jeez.....)
Love Robert Duvall. It's going to break my heart when we lose him.
I have never understood why, but Robert Duvall is probably my favorite actor, the most convincing and naturalistic performer I’ve ever seen.
It's amazing how Duvall ages physically but his intensity remains exactly the same, both on and off the screen. If you watch movies he did 10 or 20 years ago he conveys the same strength than he did 50 years ago, and it still shows in this interview.
He articulates himself very well here for his age. very well.
"Godfather I", "Godfather II", "To Kill A Mockingbird", "M*A*S*H", "Captain Newman M.D.", "Tender Mercies", "Network", "Apocalypse Now" - most actors dream of playing Robert Duval's part as well as he did in just ONE of these movies! He's appreciated, but considering his body of work, underappreciated. One of the greatest of all time. He's right up there with his idol Brando.

The sign of a great actor is how easily he delivers his lines and how believable they are. Bob has a way of delivering the lines in such a relaxed way that you believe them no matter what he is saying. Redford is the same way. Convincing. Real. His performance in Open Range is just spectacular. He is a cranky old shit in real life but he still got roles because he is so damn good and knows instinctively how to deliver his skills in a convincing way. When you reach a certain level as he did 45 years ago, you don't need a director to play your role correctly. You just KNOW and Bob has known for decades. One of the best ever. He is 90 years old now and will be leaving us soon. The cinema will lose a true master. I will cry.

Duvall's best scene is in GodFather II when he asked Pacino, " Why do you hurt me Michael?" Duvall is so amazing and subtle and real. Can't go wrong if he's in the film.

Still makes me sad that godfather 3 wasn't Duvall's character going to war with Michael. The potential "fireworks" that acting could've been!

Yeah I liked that. Keeping it within your personal emotional range. Made me think that it could work though to reach that level and instead of holding back as you may in your personal life just let it break. If the intensity is appropriate.

Network is amazing. Great Great performance by Bill Holden, Peter Finch, Faye Dunaway, Duvall, Ned Beatty, it was just incredible powerhouse. With great scripts too. Boy i miss such films.
His roles are so iconic, one thinks he's immortal and this 90-year-old version of his is a pure makeup and perfect method acting. What a legend.

I understand Rob Duval’s reluctance to explain acting, but keeping within your temperament is more instructive a sentence about acting than anything I have ever heard.

Couldn't agree more, I had exact same thought
I dont think its only a reluctance, he is truly trying to tell how he does it. Its just still so unspoken of, like acting has to be this mythical thing. Took me around 15 years of acting to realise what he is trying to say. Follow the script, read, listen, dont overdo it.
My favourite version of this is Gandalf actors(name escapes me right now) did a comedy skit where he explained his whole method to be "I pretend to be a wizard". And thats pretty much it. Now there are fantastic techniques out there that can truly create magical performances. They just are not for me, after having tried them, and they can often fail when they make you lose focus on what acting is truly about, relaying a story.
Yes, I think he's saying, 'you play a character, but you make the character out of yourself, using your emotional responses; you don't make yourself into the character.' Unless maybe you're playing a famous person in a bio-pic.

After I read Lonesome Dove, which I loved, I was not too interested in seeing the film version, but when they cast Robert Duvall as Gus, I was hooked. He was perfect in that role and the best part of the film. He is the real deal.
Duvall's greatest acting performance is Lonesome Dove. Nothing comes close, it's acting at it's finest. You fall in love with his character within the first ten minutes of the film.
I adore all of his performances, including The Apostle, which I keep watching on DVD. Amazing icon.
Duvall gave amazing acting tips in this. "Keeping it within your temperament" = Being truthful to yourself/your core being, so you're not acting at that moment aka faking it. He's a living legend.
Tender Mercies is one of the greatest films I have ever seen. His singing in that is AMAZING and he gets nowhere near enough credit for it. I have adored that film since I was a child and him because of it

Duvall can do more with a bad script than any of his peers. To me, that’s the sign of a great actor.

My fave scene from Network is Duvall hearing Dunaway's argument that Beale is grabbing all the headlines, and can't be lost to another network et al. And Duvall says to Dunaway "You're asking me to keep an emotionally disturbed man on the air, and keep him on?" And Dunaway just gives him this look of 'Well, yeah!' And Duvall slyly ponders it and says "I'll get back to you Diane". Brilliant!
This is so good. Duvall just reaches out and grasps so much from a place of (seemingly) achievable quiet- I can't think of a human passion he couldn't play.
Kudos to Colbert for the mix of intelligence and reverence shown throughout the interview... This is a masterclass on how to converse with elder statesmen/stateswomen.
I haven’t seen it in a long time, but I remember his amazing performance in The Great Santini. His co-stars are the sublime Blythe Danner and a very young Timothy Hutton.

Seeing interviews, some of me thinks Robert Duvall isn't really even acting. What you see is what you get. Love him.
God bless you Stephen for mining this moment. One of my absolute favorites. The best of Paddy's films. It all seemed to come together with such a force - cast, subject, script, and the times and yet more prophetic than any one could have imagined. That is a great scene, along with Dunaway's "Frank, we're being handed this on a platter let's not piss it away," the opening scene with Holden and Finch and of course Beatty's speech … and the list goes on. Again, thanks for doing this. Surprised he was so removed. "Who wrote it, Chayeskfsky?" Yikes.

I knew immediately the scene in Network when I saw the title of the video. That's also my favourite from the movie chock-full of amazing scenes. What a fantastic performance!

There are Television episodes from the early 60's from this man that are "OSCAR" worthy, a natural! Loved Lonesome Dove, re-watch it every couple of years.

In the clip from "Network", Robert Duvall reminded me of a younger Robert DeNiro. Awesome.
The reason Duvall is not more famous is this, and so frustrated I can't find who said it (I think Letterman; maybe Carson): "Every movie he's in, it looks like they got The Real Guy to be in the movie- it never looks like an actor playing a part." So he's not 'famous for acting' like others are.

It's the difference between character actors and movie stars. Movie stars get the asses in the seats. Character actors keep them there.
He seems to be more content, from the roles he's chosen and played, to prefer being an outstanding character actor instead of a "star"
He's always been a treat in many classic Westerns too..."Open Range" "True Grit" etc

Kind of the opposite of what's going on now where the TV 'bad guys' are controlling a large proportion of people and having them do bad things.

My favorite Robert Duvall role was Gus McCrae in the TV miniseries Lonesome Dove. He really brought that character to life.

It made me feel like a primitive, single-cell Santini.
I think I understand the temperment reference - he's suggesting that actors must bring their own voice to the character. They can add certain traits or quirks to a performance, but honesty comes when they connect with some inner truth.

Was invited to lunch with Duvall, DeNiro and a couple of others (can't remember), but Paddy Chayefsky was there and I was seated next to him. He was the only one I talked with. At one point Duvall said, She's sitting here with (think there were 4) famous actors and all she wants to do is talk to the fkin writer." Chayefsky was such a brilliant writer and a very nice man. He was so sweet to talk to me and answer my zillion questions.

As a kid I thought he was the bad guy as Michael Douglas seemed to be that “Everyman Anti-Hero”, but the more I watch as an adult the more I see that Prendergass is the real hero.
Yeah, that short scene where he's talking to his boss and you can clearly tell he hates him is excellent. Subtle but unmistakable.
Just refound Falling Down and bought it on DVD- hadn't watched it in decades, but when I did all these buried memories of how good it was with Duvall and Douglas flooded back as scenes played

*I think the best story I ever heard on 'Acting' was from Burt Reynolds*
*Reynolds said "I was working not far from the set of 'Inherit The Wind' and I got the chance to speak with Spencer Tracy and ask him for advice and was shocked when he actually talked with me instead of throwing me out on my ass and he told me "The best advice I can give you is to 'hold back' in a scene where you're being asked to be in a fight or some verbal encounter...don't ever 'go overboard' with your portrayal of whatever character your playing...don't take the easy way out, and think it thru first"*
*Tracy told me "You remember 'Captains Courageous" and the fight scene I had where all I did was hold John's wrist tight? It was supposed to have been a 'punch-up' and we changed it to a test of strength and will instead of sailors brawl"*
*The other advice I've heard was from Edward G. Robinson who said *When you take on role, always give it your best because you owe it to yourself and the audience watching you and THEY are the ones who pass judgment on your abilities...not the director or a producer or even the head of a studio or your fellow actors...the people in the theatre are your judges"*

@@robertbates6249 *I always admired 'Little Eddie G' because he always 'put everything' into whatever role he was offered, no matter what it was...from 'gangster' to 'home-spun farmer' and even a not-well-known movie called 'The Hatchet Man' with him in the 'lead' as 'The Honorable Hatchet Man' which is the Chinese equivalent of a 'roving U.S. Marshal' for the Royal House*
*Even at his end, when he knew he was on his way 'out' he absolutely insisted on playing the role 'Saul' in 'Soylent Green' opposite Charlton Heston...and he put his 'absolute best' into it, and it shows*
(*The studio was nervous over Robinson, and Heston said "No Eddie, no 'Me' because he always makes me look good in anything...all I have is 'chin and strut' and some 'looks' and he's a real actor"* )

You are not a Robert Duvall fan if you haven't seen his performance in Wrestling Ernest Hemingway which, of course, is magnificent.
The first movie that comes to my mind whenever Robert Duvall is mentioned is "Falling Down". And he was in The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, two of the greatest movies ever made.

Robert Duvall's reaction to seeing the "Network" clip is a genius observation, and so many years later! And he didn't remember the movie well before seeing the clip! He nailed it that Hackett threatens to lose it yelling at Max Schumacher, but sits down barely containing his rage, and it totally energizes the scene to the max - the anger Duvall didn't release...

The Great Santini was such a down to earth film even including the color it was shot in. It almost looked more like a made for TV movie. While the acting was solid as was the story. But what made the film stand out as a classic was one thing and one thing only and that was Robert Duvall. The true archetype of the malevolent father who disembowels those around him simply because he cannot love himself. Definitely a superb actor. Compare this to the almost benign role in The Godfather and you see his true range.
Second Hand Lions and A Night in Old Mexico are two of my favorites.

I gotta say, It's great to hear from an aging veteran of stage and screen, who still has a complete set of marbles, and a heart as big as outdoors. He reminds me of Jimmy Stewart.

Reading comments about Duvall's work, I'd give a shout out to a 1997 film called "The Apostle". Very much an "indie" film, which is what brought it to my attention back then, just getting into cinema. Incredible performance in that film, which he also wrote and directed.
He did an "Outer Limits" episode in which he infiltrated a group of space aliens, then left with them, because he "loved no one, and was loved by no one."
That would work with truly talented actors that have done their home work!
