Important update : 1) if your colors look weird, in the layers panel you'll need to uncheck "use lights" at the bottom of the layers list, for each layer, just under the blend mode and opacity. This option is used if you have lights sources close to your drawing, to make it affect the color.
2) if your canvas is hidden behind the cube, dont worry you will see in the next step how to move it. For now, just hide the cube with the eye icon in the outliner
3) if you finished this tutorial, please check my update to go further in my other video czcams.com/video/saIFT8_j0LQ/video.html
4) If your paint bucket doesnt work, it probably has the intermediary gap auto-fill. It means that it works only two clicks. After the first click you can adjust the gaps with the mouse wheel, and then click a second time to paint
5)At the drawing introduction, if the canvas grid is hidden under the cube for your blender version, you can temporarily hide the cube in the outliner in top right list, by clicking on the eye icon for the cube
Thanks so much!
Is it possible to convert PNG (line art transparency) pixels to a grease pencil object ?
or generally turn pictures into objects in such a way that every pixel is a surface ? That must be what's happening when the picture is imported as a plane except the individual pixels aren't interactive until you subdivide the plane, while making sure the mapping remains correct ?
WOW, thanks a million, the entire day I tried to figure out what was wrong.
i have no clue how to find this

@FIR Check his Twitter...
Heads up: If you are using Blender 2.83+ grease pencil is now affected by lighting, so if you are at the step where you add fill color to the scene and it looks off that is why. You can disable lighting on each layer by unchecking "Use lights" or for the whole grease pencil object by going into Object Properties (Orange box) on the right and under Visibility uncheck "Use Lights"
Doesn't change a thing, I still have lights problems:(
You have saved me. Thank youuu

Ok
Blender is easy when compared to Autodesk stuff.
At the drawing introduction, if the canvas grid is hidden under the cube for your blender version, you can temporarily hide the cube in the outliner in top right list, by clicking on the eye icon for the cube
edit: almost got it.. thanks again so much. that was cursed indeed to find it :). how do i manage to make the planes of the box match? they don't seem to be aligned ever...
Or you could also do this, there's the same icon as x-ray toggle mode beside the canvas option, if you check that. You'll be able to see the canvas through the cube
i was looking for that
Thank you! :)
@@thismakesnosense4815 i wanted that to work, but it did nothing to my cube
To people saying "use empties instead of boxes for the 3D cursor" ... The problem with the empties is that you need to leave your drawing tool, switch to object mode, then select the empty, then press shift+S, put 3D cursor to selected, go back to the greasepencil object, switch to draw mode.... And continue to draw. With the boxes, while you draw, you just press shift + Right click on them, and don't even need to leave the drawing tool :-). As an illustrator, i know that leaving the pen just to reposition a cursor is very bad for the creation workflow... So with this technique, you just need to place the boxes once for all
Also if for those who don't know, if you press N you open up a side bar menu, in one of these menus you can adjust the XYZ co-ordinates of the 3D cursor so if you set everything to 0 the 3D cursor will move back to world origin.
TLDR: press N to open a side menu, find the 3D cursor setting, hover over them and press BACKSPACE/set everything to 0. There your 3D cursor is now back to default.
Hello !
What about using planes? It seems to work for me. You migth have to rotate it, but you don't have to go through the repositioning hassle. The only downside I see, is that you won't see the plane from the side view. (also, great tutorial!)
@@Giga_Hood Or you can just press Shift-C to reset 3D cursor position to 0

Did you have Blender automatically create that based on your voice, and some randomization for blinking and looking down? Or, did you do it all by hand?

TheRandom Noctowl yeah it’s crazy. I know some people one day will always dislike because they will believe they have better techniques for one specific task i showed or whatever but, anyway, i did this video with all the knowledge i had at the time i recorded it... i am learning new techniques myself everyday and i will make other tutorials. This took weeks to record and edit and it is free so, i am glad people like it!
Clearly your comment triggered people
@@v1nigra3 ahah yeah, let's keep this low XD
@@dedouze Did you record it all in one go?

I mean that was a ton of knowledge dropped in this hour and very concisely explained with no major interruptions (sometimes even a little bit fast, but that's what the pause button is for :)
It must have taken a ton of work to organise all your knowledge in a good concise order to present.
@@FreakStyler i re did the tutorial 4 times after learning new stuff myself. And for the final version, i recorded the audio multiple times, and wrote a lot of the script. it was so many nights of work
Yet I know nothing about greasepencil. Looks like the best place to start learning😊
ur profile pic says it all
Best part here is that since it's your first tutorial, you also have a very efficient fundamental overview for new users. It's pretty straightforward. I wish that I had this when I was learning years ago. Thank you!
I cant believe you managed to tutorialize the technique ive been imagining in my dreams for so long, from now on, whatever piece of art I'll do with this, I will owe it to you
This is an brilliant tutorial. It's quite dense in information, but everything is very clear. Not only do you explain how to do everything and exactly WHY it works that way, but you also mention what to look out for and possible mistakes you could make in the process.
I've been a fan of your work for some time now and went into this basically expecting to be overwhelmed by how difficult what you do is (like with... a lot of blender tutorials lmao). In the end I managed to not only understand exactly how everything comes together, but also learned something i could use to incorporate into my own art (the "draw on shape" tip in particular, even though it wasn't even needed here). Thank you so much for making this amazing tutorial, I imagine this took a heck of a lot of time to assemble.
7:49 how to create drawing
8:43 how to add 2d animation
Just in case I cant find.... Your tutorial is awesome!! Thank you for your sharing:)
At 8:43…
I can’t find the plus button. His tabs somehow change and are much different to mine? The plus button doesn’t appear and I’ve looks so long trying to find it but I’m pretty much a beginner so I don’t know where anything is 🤷♀️
This is one of the most valuable blender tutorial channels due to how rare are good grease pencil tutorials are thank you Dedouze!
35:51 Tip:
Alt + D to create an Instance (changing one object's properties affects all)
Shift + D to create a Duplicate (each object is unique and treated differently)
These techniques feel like the future of animation. As these tools mature, I think a single animator will be able to create so much more output per time than they can currently. Maybe one day we can even reach the holy grail where with smart use of tools a single animator can create very long animations.
@That guy 🤣

If you're having a hard time seeing the canvas due to it being too faint. You can increase the "Canvas Grid Opacity" in the overlays panel and also change the color by clicking the "green spaghetti" under "viewport display" - "Canvas" - "Color".

Большое спасибо!!! Очень долго искал туториал, и наконец нашёл лучший!!
Someone might have already given this tip but... in order to hide any kind of object in the final render you can also click the "funnel" drop-down list above the Outliner and select the "Disable in Renders" toggle, natively it's hidden. It's basically the same operation but in the long run and in more complex scenes it helps you visually keep track of all the objects. Absolutely brilliant tutorial nonetheless!
Note for those who are using Blender 2.83+.
If your colors are too dark and changing color managment does not help. Uncheck "Use Lights" on every layer in your Grease Pencil Layers list.
Second note: If you can't see your canvas (that square grid thingy in middle) even when it is turned "on" it is possible that color of background match color of your canvas. To change it go to that panel where you have grease pencil layers, then Viewport Display > Canvas and change color :)
Third note: in Blender 2.83+ for fill you can use vertex paint which is faster but using materials have some benefits. For example you can quickly change colors in every layer.
Thanks for the "use lights" tip, that was just the problem I had!
@@trenensen8592 Sure, no problem :)
Hi, thanks for the tips. The problems i've ran into with the canvas is that it is being obscured by the cube. If i look inside the cube I can see the grid.
omg thanks for the color tips so much !!
I really need this, thanks man👍👍👍👍👍
That head motion with the sound waves is a genius idea!
Thank you for making this! You've been so busy and I know this took a lot of work. Thank you!
This is a great tutorial. A little tip, I'm not sure if it's the same in grease pencil but in every other tool that uses a brush (especially sculpting), the hot key F will allow you to resize the brush without having to adjust the slider. I forget but i think shift F allows you to adjust the opacity/hardness of the brush. Also if you press the TAB key it's a shortcut to change modes (object mode, drawing mode, sculpting mode, etc.), a littl wheel will appear and you can move your mouse and click yo change modes, if you're quick it will change to the mod3 you move your cursor to if it's done quickly. Also if you press Z you can switch between the views (render view, wite frame, texture preview, etc.) so you don't have to click in the top right.
I'm sure you probably knew these but if you didn't here they are and if you dod well i hope this helps someone in the comments ^-^.
For the weel you actually have to press ctrl + tab, but yes, thats very useful! (Edit: also, the "if you do it quickly" happens when you move your mouse whilst still holding down the key (key or tab). The mode will change as soon as you let go of the key.)
