Back to the 1950s and 1960s different time and different place, much simpler time, a much more innocent time. School "sock hops" so called because they were held in the schools gym and you had to take your shoes off (so not to harm the floor). The music switched back and forth between rock and roll and slow music. Slow dancing an acceptable way to hold your girl close. I am in my 70s and this type of music take me back to win I was 16.

Thank you so much for sharing your feelings about this music. The Platters are so revered. Their music lives and has a lasting place in history, and this particular song is a classic that has been covered by so many great singers. It was actually written by composer Jerome Kern for a Broadway play in the early 1930s. It has been sung by Irene Dunne, Kathryn Grayson, recorded by several Big Band orchestras (incl. Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman.) Harry Belafonte and the wonderful Nat King Cole recorded it, as did my very favorite female jazz singer, Dinah Washington. The Platters' version certainly clings in the memories of those of us who grew up in that era! Absolutely beautiful. My dear mom loved this song, too.

This was the mid-50's where music was transitioning from Big Band and Swing thru folk/pop with smaller groups like the Platters and into the beginnings of 'Rock & Roll' which got cranked up just a few years later in the late 50's. And yes, Mel there was no electronic enhancement at all back then. It was all voices. The only thing electronic at that time were the guitars , and they were still fairly new. I'm really looking forward to when you two get into the 'Folk' and 'Folk/Rock' genres. I think you'll enjoy those too. Top 6 groups for that music was The Brothers Four, The Highwaymen, The Irish Rovers, Simon and Garfunkel, and last but probably the best - Peter, Paul and Mary and the Mamas and the Papas. They cover the genre from the mid-50's thru the 60s and into the 70's. You both Take Care.

Kathy here - hope you guys are doing well. Love your reactions. I also know you love "old" music. Here are a few songs that are turning 65 this year. Trouble - Elvis - other songs, couldn't get all the names but these are the songs - Johnny Be Good - Rock and Roll is here to stay - Tears on my pillow - Chantilly Lace - Breathless - Good Golly Ms. Molly - Lonely Teardrops - Rockin Robin - Stagger Lee - Rockin around the Christmas Tree - these are some great songs which turn 65 years old this year! I am almost 69, so this is the music I was raised on and sang and danced to. Love the memories all the older songs you two play just fills my brain with memory after memory. Thanks for that.

IMHO , of all the groups of this era, The Platters were the cream that rose to the top.

...if you haven't already seen it, watch "American Graffiti ". The soundtrack supports the movie so well. It's in the wheel house of what your listening to these days. This song in the movie is poignant, with ron howard dancing wth his girlfriend, cindy williams, both from happy days, the 70's sitcom. Such a sweet song.

The song was also featured in the movie "Always", starring Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter, and John Goodman. Tissues are a must!

I'm not old enough to be your grandparents. But I'm old enough to be your parents. Because of my parents I grew up listening to great songs from the 50's and 60's

I was so, so very fortunate. I discovered the power of music about the time I hit 6th grade. That was the sixties. I grew up down the road from Detroit so Motown songs flooded the airwaves right along with Elvis, the Righteous Brothers, country, rock-a-billy, to rock and roll, and soul music. I learned to love and appreciate it all. Hearing these "oldies" makes my soul smile
