  • The velvet-voiced Tony Williams leads the Platters in one of the most soaring love songs of all time in this 1959 video performance. Gorgeous violins and the extraordinary Platters backups add to this song about smoke, indeed, getting in the eyes of love.

One the greatest songs ever recorded. The reach, clarity & arrangements. I cry every time i hear this. What has happened to black music. The Platters v Rap. It is no contest. Black music has been reponsible for our understanding of all popular music. Elvis, The Beatles etc are with us because of the music made by black people. We are forever indebted & i'm sure Motown Stax etc artists feel that love & indedtedness like i do. Thankyou so much for this. Xxxx

it would be imposible for any singer today to sing like this, cos even with all the technology now, sing would have no chance of ever coming close

Couldn't agree more. One of the greatest love songs and one of the best singers I've ever heard. Hairs stand on end every time. I'm nearly 50 and I've been fortunate to have been brought up listening to this music. I'll forever be in debt to my parents.

Great song. They use to play clubs in the 70's. At the time it was Herb Reed (the short gentleman in the group) and The Original Platters. Saw them 3-4 times and they sounded great.

The song “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” predates The Platters by 25 years. This song was written for the 1933 Broadway musical “Roberta” with music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Otto Harbach. It was first performed by Tamara Drasin in the original Broadway production. You can hear Ms Drasin sing the original Broadway version here: czcams.com/video/50QO9vW9iUo/video.html

Thank you. Ms. Drasin’s version sounds rather perfunctory, but the tune is certainly catchy. Hard to believe this song is that old. Thanks again
