The Platters are one of the greatest vocal groups of The 20th Century.
"Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," "The Magic Touch", " My Prayer ", " Twilight Time" are among their best recordings. However, "The Great Pretender" might be the greatest recording of all-time.
Legendary group.
Yeah, everything he just said
I remember them as one of the best groups of the 50s. Slow dancing to their songs was dreamy 🤗💙
Isn’t this song romantic….. so old school but so cool ! My mom loved this and would sing it very loudly! My sisters and I would laugh!
Yes the GREAT PRETENDER YES YES YES
Yes to all of these and more!! 😍
Wow . Hard to believe Jay was a rap fan last year . He's gone into this with an open mind . Now he's listening to and enjoying the platters . Hats off to you young man 😀
He's hearing music as a single thing rather than splitting it all up into genres or cool vs not cool or old vs current. In other words he's become a true music lover.
"... a rap fan." And a Raps fan, apparently.
50s was beautiful, cars and music
Yes, it's a beautiful thing.
You can be a rap fan and like other genres. 🤷🏻♂️
The look on your faces, when this song started was nothing short of priceless. No auto tune back then. Just PURE TALENT.
hear hear!
The Platters were at the top when I started high school in 1957. Loved their music then and even more today at 80 years old.
Boy does this bring back memories. As a 73 old white dude, it does not matter what color we are -right?
Smoke gets in your eyes is their best.
Yes, yes, yes! Please react to Smoke gets in your eyes, then react to “Always” on your movie channel. You will NOT regret it. ❤️
@@melaniewirick6213, I was going to say the same thing. "Always" is a great movie.
Great song
I loved “Harbor Lights” as well..❤️🎶
@@melaniewirick6213 such a great movie!!! 😍
One of the most beautiful songs of all time. Period. "The Great Pretender" is another classic by them. The singer with the golden voice is Tony Williams.
Tony Williams is one of the greatest (and sadly overlooked) singers of the 20th Century.
His vocals are some of the finest in American music history.
Y'all better not forget about Sam Cooke👍
@@antonioiniguez1615 Sam Cooke. I remember when he died. It just didn't seem possible such a thing could happen to such a great talent.
You got to admit it ,our music back then was beautiful with so many talented singers !
Tony Williams, one of the most beautiful voices of all times. No convincing required. Just closely listen to the quality of the voice. If you can't hear that,, you just haven't been alive long enough to know what astounding voice quality is. I was there. As you get older, you'll see.
It’s a shame that he was caught in a hotel with white women and you sure couldn’t do that in the 50s.
The Platters remain one of the best vocal groups ever!!
Lmao!! 😊 I think Amber literally melted in her seat at the sound of his voice. 🫠😍
I saw Jay melt!!! XooX
Yeah I was thinkinging "It's ok Amber you can swoon if you want." :D
@@johnwoodworth9127 😆
@@lifewuzonceezr Did he? I miss that.
Yes! I love seeing these young women "swoon" and I am not sure they even knew what swooning was. LOL Love it.
Excellent reaction. Tony Williams was the Greatest! The Platters had so Much CLASS. Just loved them.
💯
The lead voice is the late great Tony Williams who was a superb tenor. The man was pure class, great diction, beautiful tone, breathing technique. His transition to the headnote was effortless.I have always suspected that this man had some experience in classical music. You should listen to My Prayer and Harbour Lights. Do this ASAP.
You guys should react to more of The Platters…
"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", "The Great Pretender", "You've Got The Magic Touch", "My Prayer", "You'll Never Never Know", "Twilight Time", "Enchanted", "Harbor Lights", "Ebb Tide"
🎸🤘
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
Pretender! Pretender! Pretender!
Hard to believe you made it this long without a Platters reaction. (Not being critical.)
A bag of great performances.
Love Ebb Tide so much.
“Platter” commonly known as a record player’s turntable that spins vinyl discs. Hence, The Platters name was born! Shortly before going into the studio to re-record Only You for Mercury Records, 15-year-old Zola Taylor joined the all-male vocal group breaking the gender divide, a rarity back in the 1950s. In 1955, Only You (and You Alone) was played on the radio by legendary DJ Alan Freed, launching The Platters to the top of the U.S. music charts! Considered the most romantic of all the early rock & roll groups (that is, the ultimate in “make-out music”), The Platters produced hit after hit. The quintet effortlessly achieved domestic and international chart success with multiple tracks, including the timeless hits The Great Pretender, My Prayer, Twilight Time, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Harbor Lights, and many more. This success established The Platters as the classiest, groundbreaking vocal group of the early rock & roll era. Lead singer Tony Williams.
I love "The Great Pretender"!!
I love all of those songs from The Platters!
@@catwhisperer9489 Oh yes!
That is ALAN FREED who introduced them and then sat down between that couple that arrived during the song. ALAN FREED started out as a DJ in my hometown of CLEVELAND, OHIO and was the person who coined the phrase "ROCK AND ROLL" and held the FIRST "ROCK AND ROLL BALL here in Cleveland at the Cleveland Arena in the early '50s, it was called the "MOONDOG BALL" He grew up in Salem, Ohio which is about an hour drive southeast of Cleveland.
@@brachiator1 👍
Amber fell in love as soon as the singing started, the look on her face was amazing, her reaction was one of a heart melting. Great reaction as always keep them coming.
Totally Agreed....I saw that
Loved Amber's jaw dropped.....at the first
I saw that too great to see that these youngsters are touched by such quality.
Tony Williams had one one of the most beautiful voices this World has ever heard!!
Jay & Amber, you'll Love their "The Great Pretender", "My Prayer", "At Twilight Time", "(You've Got) The Magic Touch" and "You'll Never Never Know"!!!! One of my Mom's favorite groups!
edit- Tony Williams on lead vocals.
"At Twilight Time" YES!!!!!
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.
@@mikemaricle9941 Absolutely agree. I LOVE that song!!
Just watched your Fast Tines at Ridgemont High reaction and this song appears in one of my favorite films of all time AMERICAN GRAFFITI which is also a film about high schoolers in their last Sumner before going to college etc. It's a masterpiece directed by George Lucas so I hope you watch it. And the whole soundtrack is tremendous.
I have been hoping that American Graffiti would be showing up on their movie reaction channel. I agree, Robert about the soundtrack from American Graffiti....it is amazing. ✌️
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Agreed!
Classic movie with classic music and classic cars! They really need to check out American Graffiti. I gotta go watch their Fast Times reaction!! 🤩 I was hoping they would get it suggested to them, but honestly wasn't sure if they would like it or not.
One of my all time favorite movies! Just wrote a comment that I bought the American Graffiti soundtrack album once I had my own money, as I was about 12 when I saw the movie. What a cast, what a soundtrack, and I had a tremendous crush on John Milner in his yellow coupe 😊.
My parents, both in Heaven now, used to say that this was their song. Miss them a lot! God bless their souls! 🙏♥️
That's beautiful
Tony Williams...singer....one of the greatest purest vocals in pop recorded history
In the eighties, I was out with my parents for dinner at a pub with an old juke box and this song came on and I had to watch them make goo goo eyes at each other. They did not listen to music at home so I was surprised by their reaction. An epic love song is unforgettable. Oh. And another epic love song is Unforgettable by Nat K Cole.
The real beauty in this performance is that it comes directly from the singer’s throat into a microphone and on to acetate. Zero filters or enhancements, just the raw God Given talent of a remarkable human voice. Such a joy ✌️
If you enjoyed this, you will REALLY enjoy The Platters version of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." It truly showcases the fantastic voice of lead singer Tony Williams.
Do “My Prayer” please
No one to compare with Tony Williams besides rudy Lewis of the drifters
My Grandfather. ❤
For people of my generation who danced to this at school "sock hops" the opening of this song STILL gives me goosebumps!!!
"Ebb Tide", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "My Prayer", "Red Sails In the Sunset", "Twilight Time", "The Great Pretender", and "You'll Never Know", are great songs by The Platters...❤❤❤
Ebb Tide is so wonderful.
@@daz_n I play it every year for my parent's Wedding Anniversary... They loved The Platters
No duds with The Platters! Twilight Time gives me chills. I've always been fascinated with the fifties because of my folks 45 collection.
My folks had this on 78!
The female in the group, Zola Taylor was one of Frankie Lymon"s wives.
This is one of the greatest songs of all time
They were the epitome of this style in the 50s. I have their greatest hits. Any song you select is great. Try the Great Pretender and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.
Tony Williams was the lead singer (until 1960), leaving to begin a solo career. Sadly, he died of emphysema in 1992. This song was on the charts in mid-1955.
Falling in love to the Platters beautiful music (Tony Williams lead) over decades 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm 72 years old and I remember my Parents slow dancing around the kitchen when this came on the radio, he died in 1992 but Mom is still with us at 93.
Loved the Platters. You should also react to them singing Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. They are magnificent. They had some great hits back in the day. Miss this music. Thanks for your reactions.
And then they need to watch Always.
“Smoke Gets in
Your Eyes” was my mom’s favorite song. Great songs
His voice is BUTTERY. "Smooth and sweet like butter".
Wow, Look how beautiful they look! They just drip with Class and style back then.
And that smooth sound... awesome!
I was 9 years old when this was released in the UK. It made an instant impact on me which has lasted for the last 66 years. It is perfection.
I am so happy you guys are experiencing this music and I can relive it with you
Yes me too. I never had kids and one of the things I miss the most from not having them is being able to introduce them to these great sounds! I cried and got goosebumps when I first watched these 2 young ones discovering this music.
@@courtneyhenley681 it is so wonderful watching them react and fall in love with older music. I also enjoy them watching movies now too.
The Platters were THE superstar vocal group of the late '50s and early '60s. Immensely successful on the charts.
Tony Williams, the lead singer, has a great voice, love the Platters, a bunch of great songs.
My mum absolutely loved The Platters...she would melt at his voice...such beautiful voices
You need to listen to "Smoke gets in your eyes " by them . That is my favorite song from them .
Please watch American Graffiti!! Jay will love the cars and the soundtrack! Their music is all through the movie.
Agree!!!✌️
This is one of those groups where you can pick any song of theirs and its amazing…
My Mom was a Huge Platters fan! She had every album. I got to see them live as a teenager with Mom. ❤
I still love them so much. ❤
"The great pretender" is my best song from The Platters. Love you both!
The look on your faces when he started singing was priceless. You should check out more of these guys. You will not be disappointed.
When I was a kid, every adult had a Platters album. Tony Williams had the best voice from the fifties, period.
Platters lead singer Tony Williams could give anyone a run for their money when it cames to singing....easily one of the best, if not the best, of the time
The Platters are LEGENDS!!!! (and one of my all time personal Favorites) They have so many amazing songs, TWILIGHT TIME, SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES and THE GREAT PRETENDER , a song covered by the Late Great FREDDIE MERCURY!!!!!!!
One of the greatest recordings EVER!!!! Thanks for playing it.
The Platters are my all time favorite group from the 50s, this is the era when I was growing up in my teen years! Love love love them !
Almost angelic, choir like, brings tears to our eyes they were very popular way back many hits
The Platters are one of the best groups ever. Smoke gets in your eyes is a must listen to.
Another great singer of this era that I dont believe you have done is Jerry Butler "The Iceman" Wonderful voice. "For Your Precious Love" , " Let it Be Me", "Never Gonna Give You Up" are a few of his top hits.
Your faces tells it all at 1:51... love your channel!
One of the greatest voices of all time ! Tony Williams RIP 🙏
💯
Such an enduring classic. Doesn't really get much better than this.
It's a treat to watch your faces during the first 30 seconds of the song. Gobsmacked, comes to mind. ❤
My very favorite of this group's hits. Melts my heart every time.
Back in 1964 I was 14 years old working in a detail shop. Me and 15 black guys. They messed with me for awhile til they heard me sing. I've been a big soul music guy my whole life. Me and 3 other guys used to sing this one on breaks. I miss those guys.
"Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" is simply beautiful
Another two great songs in a similar vein are "I Only Have Eyes For You" by The Flamingos and "Stay in My Corner" by The Dells.
Thank you for the Platters. Had a huge impact on R&B and Rock and Roll. Smoke gets in your eyes is also a great song.
The great Tony Williams, one of the 4 great singers of the early do-wop/R&B era, and one of the great pop singers of all time. Listen to The Platters do "Twilight Time", "My Prayer", and of course the great "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes".
Both of your face expressions when they begin to sing are priceless!!!!! Confirms the greatness of the Platters!!!
"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is striking! Tony Williams at his finest.
Important group. This song is a classic. Try Smoke Gets in your
Louis Jordan - Is You Is Or Is You Ain't (My Baby)
Big Maybelle - I Don't Want to Cry
The Mills Brothers - I Heard
Etta James - All I Could Do Was Cry
My formative years were wrapped in the Platters velvety songs: "Twilight Time", "My Prayer" and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes". Enjoy the love they embrace.
Oh Ya'll done good !!" My Prayer"" Great Pretender" "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" are some more from this iconic group!! Thank you Thank you!!!
Back when times were more pure and innocent. The Platters were my moms favorite. She passed in January. I’m tearing up. I love them. Smoke gets in your eyes. The great pretender. Those are two more that are just beautiful
One of the very best band’s ever love them.🍿🇨🇦
This song with the Players should be in every every wedding❤❤❤the ultimate wedding song. Proposalsong
That's known as song styling. It's an art on its own.
“On My Word of Honour” is another great song of theirs
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, is a MUST!!!!!
Two hundred years from now, they'll still be listening to the platters.
The Platters are absolutely amazing. The great pretender, That magig touch. Just beautiful.
My Dad’s favorite group… I remember him playing this when I was a kid. ❤️
Tony Williams......such an iconic voice......wow... and the other Platters harmonise amazingly...
The look on your faces when my man hits that note . Priceless
Tony Williams was not singing falsetto. He was a pure tenor, and smooth as silk.
What a gem! Unfortunately there won't be any music like this again. Tony had such an incredible beautiful voice one of the best👍
Welcome to the greatest group with the smoothest singer of all time. To this day nobody has ever done it better. They have been my favorite group since I was a kid in the 60s
No one’s voice comes close to matching Tony Williams combination of power and smoothness. It is really a one-of-a-kind voice.
My husband & I were just talking about this fabulous group, after hearing them sing this, one of our old faves from way back. We never knew back in the 50s, 60s & 70s just how fortunate we were to have the opportunities we did to hear the golden music from that time. Oh, we loved & appreciated the songs, singers, bands and all - but we didn't realize it would go away, never to come again in such wonderful quality/quantity. However, we do know just how blessed we are to have our many reactors, and the ability to watch younger people like Rob Squad hear that great music for the first time all over again! It's truly an amazing experience, and we can have it over and over again. Thanks! Love you guys!👏👏
Check out Little Richard - Long Tall Sally, these are my two favourite songs. Released around the same time, 50s.
Remember I was in the pub one day a the person I was with put this on, nearly fell out my seat. The amount of vibrato he does in this song is amazing. Great reaction guys
The unequalled voice of Tony Williams. Sublime.
I was born in the early 50's but I remember these songs because my mother loved them. The Platters, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathers and many others. Elvis came along a little latter and I fell in love with him at 6 years old. I had two teen age sisters in the 50's so I heard all the rock and roll songs on the stereo.
Suggestion for your movie reactions: Always- 1989. It's a romantic movie staring Richard Dreyfus and Holly Hunter. Classic movie star Audrey Hepburn's last role was in this movie. She was brilliant, as always. (If you aren't familiar with her, also see Roman Holiday or Sabrina) The reason I mention it is the movie features The Platters throughout. Great tunes used perfectly in this film.
My mom used to listen to The Platters when I was a little girl and I loved them and hearing them now makes me remember sitting on the living room floor while their albums were playing, along with so much other music both my mom & Dad listened to. All genres, I was so lucky they had such eclectic taste on music... Which is where my love of all music comes from. I don't know what I'd do without music everyday in my life. Your reactions are so very real and I love to see you both discover new songs and artists daily and I believe you guys also cannot go a day without listening to a song or a hundred songs each & every day. ✌️❤️ 🎶
Tony Williams probably the best sweetest perfect sound I’ve ever heard come out of a mouth ever! Perfection rip 🙏❤️
💯
The Platters music was played everywhere when I was young. They were a huge group. I loved slow dancing to their music 🎶. Very romantic.
The Platters are my mom's favorite group. She was in her teens and early 20s when they were at the top of the charts. She used to hum "Twilight Time", "The Great Pretender", "Only You" when she would cook saturday morning breakfast. I'm happy you enjoyed them too. Check out The Ink Spots.
Someone already mentioned it in the comments… Legendary group, lots of hits, Lots to look forward to
The female singing background was Zola Taylor who was married to Frankie Lymon who was in the group Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. They had a huge hit when he was just 13 years old called Why Do Fools Fall in Love.
These guys were even before my time, but my parents had an album with all their biggest hits. I knew every word to every song. Greatness! Thanks for playing the Platters.
Another great vocal group of the day was The Coasters. "Poison Ivy" and "Charlie Brown" come to mind.
Fun fact about this group: They were portrayed in the film “ Why Do Fools Fall In Love” about the tragic story of Frankie Lymon (Lorenz Tate) with Halle Berry starring as Lola from the Platters. She was one of the three women Frankie was married to and illegally married to two other women.
Wow what I just said was almost pretty much what you said two days ago lol. I wish I would have seen this first. That was a great movie.
Listen to My Prayer and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes! a wonderful Singer and Group!
The words to these songs are captivating. These songs are iconic.
