Tooled Leather Valet Tray- A Fancy Place To Store Your Stuff - How It’s Made

- Need a place to store all your every day carry items? At the end of the day a valet tray or “catchall” can be a great landing pad for all your daily gear. This tray was made from a combination of 1.7mm thick natural vegetable tanned leather and 2.1mm thick black chrome tanned leather. In this design I added a tooled layer of leather with a basket weave pattern to the bottom of the tray to help with durability and also to help keep the bottom flat. The top edge of the tray has a decorative tooled border and is held together at the corners with nickel plated D-shaped hardware. I hope you enjoy the making process for this leathercraft project.

Very nice! Love the hardware instead of rivets to hold the corners! (Those bars can screw into place, but I guess hammering holds just as well as red thread lock to keep it tight!)
Thanks. There is a version of the hardware that has threads but the one I used did not. For some reason it still had a screwdriver slot at the end of the bar.

I have tried finding the wide flat sponge pads on sticks you use. No luck, I don’t know what to call them either. Can you help please. I love tray you made. Very classy

What a nice Leatherproject and perfectly done :-) What is the size of the wood and inner pattern your are using? How wide is the edge mark? Ty for your answer :-)
Thank you. the large outside square pattern is 10.5”x10.5” and the inside small pattern is 5.5”x5.5”. The cut out border edge is 5/8” wide.

I think the chrome tanned was 5-6oz and the veg tanned 3-4oz
