How to Make a Leather Dice Box / Tray / Jewelry Box

  • I know a lot of gamers, I am one myself, so a leather Dice Box / Tray seemed like a great idea considering the number of times I've had to chase dice under the table with a bad toss. I figured I might as well put some artwork on it as well, so we've got a Viking style Raven to go along with this project. This would also make a great jewelry box.

Any tabletop gamers out there have a friend who can't seem to keep their dice on the table? Well... this could solve that. It could also solve them magically rolling 20s whenever they find them under the table.

Dark Horse Workshop I just lucked across your channel this morning while learning leather working and bouncing around your videos. Can you recommend a shop to buy a starter tool set? I’m a custom pipe maker and have been getting into adding leather working. This winter I was commissioned to build a Viking throne and will be using a ton of leather on it and would love to emboss some knotwork. I’ll be carving most, but for the seat and arm rests I’ll use leather. I’ve only seen a few of your videos, but will be burning thought them. I’m really loving your work. Cheers

You know what improves dice roll accuracy even better? Bolt cutters and finger removal, because we all know he's doing it to cheat.

I also use the antique stain or gel on the back. I like how it lays down the flesh side and smooths it out.

Same here. Or dye then go over it with Tan Kote and slick it down. Tan Kote darkens and evens out the color so you don't have to use gel all the time.

My son is a DM. Showed him this video and the armor videos. We're getting our first tool set for leather working. He just made his friends wooden boxes for their dice. This is a dynamic upgrade. I may put buckles or clasps on mine to keep it closed in transport. Love the videos and patterns.

I really enjoyed watching how you draw the raven. It shows how much patience you need to have to get everything just right. Both of my young boys have been trying to carve with me but of course don't have quite the same amount of patience. Hopefully after seeing this video they will see that nothing comes easily, you have to have patience. Can't wait to see your next project.

Really like your work . My ancestors I found out a few years ago came from the viking country still have relatives in Norway and Denmark. I do a lot of scrollsawing and use viking artwork. It a lot of work to cut out of wood but looks great when I finish. I live so far in south Georgia that Florida is not but 40 m iles away. Hope you keep up the great work you are good. another tip... When you do NOT want stain or dye to run to the back, build a border with masking tape! Just put masking tape around the edges, so the tape is vertical. The tape should be put on so that it builds a wall and the stain stops at that tape. It's super easy.

I just thought I would share a tip for those of us that do not want to spend the money, or just another "tool option" in the toolbox... when outlining your drawing onto leather, you do not need a special stylus/awl. Use a ball point pen! Not only is it just as effective as a stylus, but you can see where you've already traced so You don't get lost in your drawing! An awl is better for real intricate work.

Epidemic Sound is such a smart choice for your channel music. There's lots of freebie stuff out there but OMG so much of it is trash and I swear I've heard some of those infernal loops a billion times by know. Most of my favourite creators use Epidemic and IMO if you want to set your channel apart from the rest, stay away from the junk and go with Epidemic.
EDIT: I am not compensated in any way for my comments - I'm just a video consumer that appreciates it when channels stay away from crappy "music".

I've never dyed leather, so forgive me if this is an obvious question, but when you dyed the whole piece brown and then painted carefully around the carved raven, then dyed the raven black, why didn't you just dye the whole thing brown and then add black to just the raven? since black is darker than brown? does the dye not work well when you try to stack colors like that?
