I had the privilege and pleasure of meeting Mickey Rooney back in 1976 at the Downingtown Inn outside Phila. Was lucky enough to have him treat me to lunch because I did some work for him at his cottage on the golf course. He performed at the dinner theater there and if I remember correctly had a part interest in the resort. Great guy, polite and really down to earth.
Mickey Rooney was a genius. His talents were effusive. He could pickup any instrument and play it in 30mins like a virtuoso. I'm still trying to find a clip where he plays the banjo and a couple of other instruments as if they were his lifelong attention. His talents were under-rated and under appreciated. But where there is great talent there are also great flaws.

I heard that he also had a talent for slapping Ava Gardner around!
Here's to 'The Mick'. He was a professional in every sense of the word and continued to do so throughout his life. Well done, Sir!
He was a creepy little groper who got away with it.
I expected Edward G Robinson, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Dan Duryea, Jack Palance to play this role, but Mickey Rooney did a great part - surprised!
Why are u surprised none of those actors u listed had a babyface duh? Also Mickey is one of the all time greats of course he pulled it off
Bogey passed away in '57 , but Cagney would've been a good choice
Good thing I downloaded this. One of my favorites of all time. The era also produced Young Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, Corman's Machine Gun Kelly, Ma Barker's Killer Brood (1960), The Bonnie Parker Story, The Rise and Fall of Leg's Diamond, I remember this watching on the late late show in the 1970's. When The Addams Family went into TV syndication and Carolyn Jones' movies starting cropping up along side King Creole with Elvis.
gotta love these old time gangster movies, perfect for a friday night
Great movie
Thanks for posting
Mickey Rooney was an extremely talented actor
He did comedy and drama
He did a lot of work in early television 📺 His talent is sorely missed
Mick Rooney performed any kind of film, drama , adventure , comedy. He was one of the best Hollywood Stars. God bless you wherever you be!
I like his porn ,movies, he was only shorten stature.... not in ...wink, wink.
The actors from that era were from vaudevillian blood...they were versatile

Mickey Rooney in " It's a mad, Mad , Mad, World". Probably his best movie.
About as classic as that 1967 movie about Bonnie and Clyde.
This is a wonderful old movie and Mickey Rooney is a wonderful actor…… he always played these awesome characters……. I just love him….. very special man, loads of talent……. was a life long friend with Judy Garland
Any movie directed by Don Siegel is top notch viewing with me .... that and this elite cast of character actors , make this an enjoyable and entertaining flick 👌🏻
GREAT MOVIE, ALWAYS WITH MICKEY ROONEY, THANK YOU, A PLEASURE TO WATCH.
Great actor. He had a photographic memory. He not only new his lines but everyone else's. Micky and Carolyn seemed to have a genuine rapport with one another in this flick.
*knew
Mickey Rooney .A true star.
Baby face Nelson was 5'4" 135lbs, Mickey was 5'2" so this is a good match up.
Yesssssss is is
@matrox.
That's a big penis!
Wow what a story actors were incredible the mood was such that you feel as though you were there what a high standard of story line you would hard pressed to equal this in any time period thankyou so much for this Gem of a Movie ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Old is always Gold and this one proved it.
I remember seeing this movie as a teenager back in the 1970's on TV--I thought Rooney was quite good in this dramatic role--This guy actually did 340 different roles in movies and TV--R.I.P.
damn you are old
@@garywilliams6124 Damn, you're a little person and a moron!
Did you watch this on a UHF Channel in the 1970s?
@@warmflash I wouldn't expect a reply that was 8 years ago that make him like 80 or 90 something ,and yes all we had was Airwaves no cable no 8-track just AM radio for the most of us

This is 1957, lots of those 1920s and 30s cars were still plentiful to make this movie.
love those old sedans 👍
*applause* what a great film!!! Mickey and Carolyn work so well together! EPIC EPIC EPIC!!!
leo gordon always seemed unstable.
Mickey Rooney great actor RIP
Character actors like Ted de Corsia, Leo Gordon, Anthony Caruso & Jack Elam were always quite good when it comes to crime drama films.
they were also good on The Rifleman
My stepmother saw Baby face Nelson at a fair back in the 30's. I asked her what he looked like and she said " like everyone else".
Lol
didn't explain much. she was supposed to say "like a baby!"
Yea ? You better watch it see.
😆 😆 🤣
Uncle Bob you don't get it do you..that is so obvious, like everyone else is actually very droll.
When asked whom they thought was the greatest entertainer in Hollywood history, more of the great Hollywood stars named Mickey Rooney than any other person. The reason they all gave was that he could not only do everything, he could do everything well . . . singing, dancing, comedy, romance, drama, whatever.
This movie was not his best. But Mickey is still one of the greats anyway.
Killed that same year were :
May 1934 Bonnie and Clyde.
1934 John Dillinger.
1934 Pretty Boyd Flyod.
1934 Baby Face Nellson.
Worse than Gangsters they were Murderer Gangsters. There was but one sentence permitted by a USA court.

To paraphrase the kid from "JoJo Rabbit" It's not a good time to be a gangster'
Not a good year for gangsters.
STILL THE BEST MOVIE ON BABYFACE NELSON.
Mickey Rooney was perfect casting.
Andy Hardy turns crooked! HA!
Great character actors help film. Hardwicke, Elam, Gordon, Caruso, DeCorsia etc. Siegel's direction as always is right on.
Great movie ! Mickey Rooney was born to play Baby Face Nelson, when I think of Mickey Rooney
I think of Baby Face Nelson. Almost makes me forget about "Boys Town" (1938)....
but not quite. 1957 was the year Humphrey Bogart died & had he lived he would've
returned to gangster roles...but who knows.
Excellent Film. I saw the movie when it first came out in 1958. I always liked Mickey Rooney's Acting. This film has a great Cast, Story, Director and a plus of a great Van Alexander jazz music score. Thanks for the excellent upload. Out.
They made me wear a suit when I left prison but no suitcase just a paper bag. 😂
Mickey Rooney was one damn fine actor. Thanks for the upload.
I hope you don't mean "fine" like in looks lol.
Really good Gangster Movie with plenty of well known character actors and lots of Thompson machine guns. Mickey Rooney and Carolyn Jones are so good.
if you like mickey rooney, you'll love the movie quicksand. he's great in that one.
Thanks...gonna check it out
I just downloaded that! I'm not noir fan but man he was so good in that!!!!!
Yep, a great movie.
Yes...."Quicksand" is a very good low budget noir ! Not only Mickey, but that one also stars the late great Peter Lorre in another sinister role.
"Quicksand"? ok, looked it up. Don't know if I've seen it before, I'll have to watch it and figure that out. It also stars Jeanne Cagney, James Cagney's sister.
Leo Gordon (Dillinger) served time in San Quentin for armed robbery before becoming an actor, so he had real life experience prior to playing his role in this movie.
He also played the convict Mike Carney in the 1954 movie Riot in Cell Block 11. The director of the movie was afraid of him and the guards at the prison patted Gordon down for weapons every day.
@@shawnmalone9711 Don Siegel directed both this movie and RIOT IN CELL BLOCK 11.
@@jackgrattan1447 👌
@@jackgrattan1447
He also directed the original "Dirty Harry" film with Clint Eastwood, and (I think) several episodes of "The Golden Girls."
Mickey Rooney was a talented actor, especially in song and dance. So funny in it's a mad, mad, mad, world.
His did waaay more than song and dance
Don Siegel! Been looking for this movie for 20 years. I read about it in an Entertainment Weekly article on forgotten/orphaned films that never received a home video release. That was in 1997 or 98. Thanks, CZcams!
Wow! I have not seen this film since the sixties, It was good seeing it again. Although I always had a hard time accepting Mickey Rooney as a bad guy, I guess I always think of him as a comic actor in comedies.
Carolyn Jones and Mickey Rooney!!!what a jem!!!! thank you!!
True ! I can't wait for the upcoming remake with Linda Hunt & Danny DeVito !
I did not realize we had mountains here in Illinois. If I did not know better I would almost think this Movie was filmed in Hollywood
but I prefer to think the film makers would not insult our intelligence like that.
Somewhere in my early years,I saw this movle.Where,I don't remember.I remember talking to a gal I knew who was a big movie fan like me and I remember telling her about seeing a movie in my early childhood but not remembering the name of it.Elisha Cook,Jr. was in it and in later years became one of my favourite character actors.I remember seeing him in the late '60s in an episde of "Star Trek" where he played an attorney representing Captain KIrk.His best role was as a drummer in a 1944 movie called "Phantom Lady".He is seen taking an extended drum solo. The drumming was done by Buddy RIch.All I remember Carolyn Jones for was her role as "Morticia" in The Addams Family.
Dan VanLandingham. Mickey Rooney was on Star Trek the original the original one with James T Kirk and Spock? Mickey Rooney played a a lawyer? Who was Mickey Rooney representative?
The other film with Elisa Cook, Jr, that you're thinking of may have been "The Maltese Falcon" (1941), with Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Sidney Greenstreet, and Peter Lorre. Cook played Wilmer, the henchman of Casper "Fat Man" Gutman, Greenstreet's character.
Love this movie ,Mikey could play anything!
RIP, Micky. You was the man!
Mickey Rooney even starred on a Twilight Zone episode " Last night of a jockey",
Absolute classic, great cast thank you for sharing.

Mickey Rooney is my all time favorite actor. Animated yet believable. He was good in everything.
Of course when youconsideer my all time favorite actress was Margaret Hamilton, you may want to question me. : ) But she always played in movies you just loved her animated ways too.
I just wanted to watch because I 've been thinking Rooney would be perfect as Nelson since ever I can remember, then I discovered the movie is signed Don Siegel. That signature is like a quality brand logo on something you buy because you know is better than others in the category. Thanks for posting, a pity for the video quality
I know what you mean about the video quality. During the first eighteen minutes of the film, there were points where it pixilated, and a few times when it just stopped altogether.
The sound quality wasn't too good either. The volume was so low, I could hardly hear the dialogue. I tried listening to it with earbuds, but the sound was still pretty low.
They did a lousy job of downloading this movie on CZcams.
It's occurred to me over the years, that Mickey Rooney made it his life's ambition to distance himself from all of the "Andy Hardy" and "Judy Garland" films he made when he was much younger. In the 50s and 60s etc. he seemed to always be playing the proverbial "tough guy" , all 5 ft. of him. He in my opinion , seemed to be obsessed with putting as much distance as possible from his early films. Tremendous difference between his early and later films........
...he got older so it makes since he would choose different roles that would reflect his age he couldnt keep on playing the kid role of a Andy Hardy....
Hey thank you very much for putting her collection of these old gangster movies together. I appreciate it and we'll enjoy watching every one of them thank you don't forget the popcorn. ✌️✌️✌️👁️👁️

Really good film. Thanks for the upload.
John Hoyt and Jack Elam @1:04:20 both starred in a classic Twilight Zone, "Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up ?" I thought this Mickey Rooney flick vanished forever. I last saw it on tv in the early to mid 60s. Morticia's lookin good in her pre-Adams Family days.
Even though I think of Mickey Rooney as a comic actor, I feel this role as Babyface Nelson was made for him. He performed it well.
Ain't nothin in the world like a big eyed girl... to you Carolyn Jones
Those eyes of hers were absolutely hypnotic.
I actually sat next to Mickey at the TCM classic film festival in 2012. I wanted to ask him about this film, since it was sort of "out of character" considering most of the roles he played. I didn't think of it at the time - I could kick myself for the omission.
The reason the wheel is on the wrong side is because it was a right hand drive Rolls Royce
Wow...what a genius an obvious conclusion you came up with stating it was a right hand Rolls...that we can all see...the ? is why.. when the movie was made in the U.S...wasnt there any left hand Rolls made at the time in America
Sad feelings are hard to ignore when seeing Mickey Rooney after hearing what his disgustingly greedy family did to him in his final years.
Absolutely, I was so pleased with all the positive comments, I didn't want to mention that of his ungrateful children. Truly sad though about them, but, nevertheless we will always respect and love Mickey Rooney 😢❤😂❤😊
Children over 12 not allowed on swings but it's ok for mickey babyface rooney to use them 😂🤣😅
The Narrator at the beginning of the film sounded like Walter Cronkite!
Caroline Jones in 57..WOW..!
R.I.P. Mickey Rooney

This movie is considered a cinema classic in France. It's one of the film noirs which influenced the French New Wave directors of the 1960s.
It goes to show that the French cinema experts don't get out much.
What did you do to this films audio. We can't hear anything except the music and thats hard to hear. Don't you test ever thing before you send it out to share?
For those who say the volume is too low. Be advised that you have two volume controls on CZcams videos. One is at the bottom of the video screen. It is generally on the left side of the screen. If you have Windows, you have a volume control on the taskbar to the far right. Turn up both volumes to the level where you can hear the movies with no problems.
the volume is terribly low. thanks for the tutorial tho.
"Tish! You spoke French!" Carolyn Jones .
Call Batman,!!, it's Marsha, Queen of Diamonds!!!. Carolyn Jones.
Ha ! I kept waiting for Mickey to start kissing her arm.... :-)
Good olde tyme vintage gangster movie with a fine supporting cast. I think I actually saw this at the movies back in the day, but can't remember because my old man was such a fan of the genre he took me to see so many. Thanks for sharing...

Baby Zface Nelson robbed a bank in the town i live in. Theres still bullet holes onthe top of the building. Its now a freakin pawn shop! It was one of his biggest hiests of his career.

mickey rooney plays a crazy mafia killer i havn't seen this movie in along time.
The real "Baby Face" Nelson never worked for the Mafia, although he was, for a short time, an enforcer for Al Capone (who was never considered a Mafia member), who hired him to shake down labor union bosses for "kickbacks" to the Capone mob, but he was soon dropped from their ranks, because all too often, Nelson killed when he should have injured. (It was all the same to him.)
One of the first time a toilet was shown on the big screen before Hitchcock pyscho
Mickey Rooney as a bad guy just didn't suit him but I enjoyed the movie so thanks for posting it.
Clark gable said Rooney was the best actor in Hollywood. Got his autograph at a memorabilia show in n Hollywood in the 90s. He was tiny
Looks like Mickey needed quick cash to pay some alimony. Great for the Late, Late, Late, Show, nonetheless. Had notable character actors.
Awesome find...I have to add to my DVD collection. Thank you for posting!!!
Love the old gangster movies
Nelson was indeed a runt gangster, so Mickey Rooney was just perfect!
My Father was interviewed by Micky Rooney to be his cook, back in those days.
Did he get the job ? I'm curious as to what Mickey's diet was.....
I herd he enjoyed steak and eggs, an fried chicken
I think Mickey Rooney was a little TOO Overly Dramatic in his role in this movie. However Carolyn Jones - a.k.a. Sue (a.k.a. Morticia Addams of "The Addams Family" fame ) was actually excellent in her role as Mickey's girlfriend. I think her unique acting ability lies in her enchanting eyes.
this comment is backwards. those eyes are goofy af.
I too haven't seen this movie since the 60's. I was told on the TCM web site that they didn't have this movie in their vault since they only had movies from certain studios. I too also noticed that some scenes were cut, wonder why as this stuff isn't as bad as what's shown today. Mickey Rooney was very talented as another commenter said cause he could sing, dance and act as well anyone in his time, including James Cagney. Just my opinion, haters keep your silly comments to yourself.
Rooney did a great job of acting in a twilight zone episode, but this movie is a bomb.
he married the best looking woman frank sinatra married his ex wife
Mickey Rooney is what you call man of the forties
🎬 fabulous movie,📽️ thanks for sharing, loved those fabulous cars and the fabulous music to the soundtrack. some cool actors in the movie 📽️ thanks
Gillis (or "Nelson ") had two kids. And he seemed to be more visible than the others he did dirt track racing while still a bank robber, owned a race car, etc. His son turned out to be the Chief Foreman of the water works in Cook County, Chicago.
Casting Mickey Rooney was there first mistake
The second mistake was putting film in the camera.....
Just got done watching this great movie.was disappointed with the historical accuracy though.Lester Gillis got his name baby face from a description given to police from a woman whos purse he stole. Sue's real name was Helen.I have been to the sight of the last gun battle in barrington, il. actually spoke to an old man who witnessed it as a boy.the movie completly leaves out the brutality of that cold day .when he walked at the gman guns blazing taking 18 bullets.dillinger joined nelsons gang.
wow!! I'm 57 and the first time i saw this movie.. Mikey was great in the role... Ivonne sexy as always... :)
Has anyone noticed that in the opening scene the steering wheel to the car is on the wrong side? Also, for those who are Christians, if you read Mickey Rooney's Official Website, you will discover he got radically saved towards the end of his life. I'm sure most on here don't really care but I for one hope to see him in Heaven.
ha-ha, radicallized by Christians! more like swating bullets for decades of cherr popping debauchery.

I agree with Tim S - some scenes seem incomplete as if the movie has been cut.
I thought Rooney was very good and the brief love scenes between him and Carolyn Jones love pretty intense - she looked fantastic.
Never seen that model of Rolls before. It looked wonderful.
Nice continuity. 40s trucks for 30s time line.
When the guy grabbed Mickey by lapels and picked him up off bed effortlessly the balance of the movie just seemed comical for Mickey being a tough guy.
to golfmeiester. The car is a Rolls Royce made in England where they drive on the other side of the road. Back then I doubt whether RR would bother to make a car with the wheel on the left side.
yeah, I thought it was a RR...used to see cars a lot just like that one drawn in cartoons like in the New Yorker.

At the beginning of the movie....HOW IN THE WORLD DID THE STEERING WHEEL END UP ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR !!! Is it a film reversal? I love Mickey Rooney, Truly one of the greats.
Arthur Renner happens a lot a because the film can go into a projector either way I’m tipping its been reversed there . Of because it’s a Rolls Royce maybe back then it was a right hand drive ?
John 'Red' Hamilton was born just a few miles from me. RIP Red

interesting take on it... the real Baby Face was a freaking sick maniac.
As at the oligarchs who seek complete control over all of humanity.
And his table manners were also known to be atrocious. He'd eat peas with a knife. And once he was spied drinking out of the finger bowl !
So I've heard. While most of the big gangsters of his day only used their guns when they were trapped by the law, and could see no way out, Nelson was quick to start shooting, because he LOVED violence, a fact that shocked even other hoodlums, including his buddy, John Dillinger.
Nelson's addiction to killing was best exemplified by his maniacal opinion on how a bank robbery should be committed. His method, which he laid out to Dillinger and his gang, was to race into a bank, shoot everyone in sight, force those left standing to hand over the money, and then, drive out of town with his gun blazing. When Homer Van Meter, a member of the Dillinger mob, who believed in more reasonable ways of robbing banks, scoffed at Nelson's ideas, "Baby Face" was so insulted, that he was on the verge of shooting Van Meter, but Dillinger talked him out of it.
With Nelson as an accomplice, the robberies committed by the Dillinger gang became more violent and bloody. During one heist, someone set off the alarm bell, and Nelson just went berserk, screaming "I'm going to kill the bastard who set off that alarm!" He was distracted, however, when he saw a policeman looking through the bank window, so he shot him instead! "I got one of them!" he yelled with glee.
Morticia, Zorro & Frollo, who knows what am talking about ?
