I had the privilege and pleasure of meeting Mickey Rooney back in 1976 at the Downingtown Inn outside Phila. Was lucky enough to have him treat me to lunch because I did some work for him at his cottage on the golf course. He performed at the dinner theater there and if I remember correctly had a part interest in the resort. Great guy, polite and really down to earth.

Mickey Rooney was a genius. His talents were effusive. He could pickup any instrument and play it in 30mins like a virtuoso. I'm still trying to find a clip where he plays the banjo and a couple of other instruments as if they were his lifelong attention. His talents were under-rated and under appreciated. But where there is great talent there are also great flaws.

Good thing I downloaded this. One of my favorites of all time. The era also produced Young Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, Corman's Machine Gun Kelly, Ma Barker's Killer Brood (1960), The Bonnie Parker Story, The Rise and Fall of Leg's Diamond, I remember this watching on the late late show in the 1970's. When The Addams Family went into TV syndication and Carolyn Jones' movies starting cropping up along side King Creole with Elvis.

The reason they all gave was that he could not only do everything, he could do everything well . . . singing, dancing, comedy, romance, drama, whatever.

It's occurred to me over the years, that Mickey Rooney made it his life's ambition to distance himself from all of the "Andy Hardy" and "Judy Garland" films he made when he was much younger. In the 50s and 60s etc. he seemed to always be playing the proverbial "tough guy" , all 5 ft. of him. He in my opinion , seemed to be obsessed with putting as much distance as possible from his early films. Tremendous difference between his early and later films........

For those who say the volume is too low. Be advised that you have two volume controls on CZcams videos. One is at the bottom of the video screen. It is generally on the left side of the screen. If you have Windows, you have a volume control on the taskbar to the far right. Turn up both volumes to the level where you can hear the movies with no problems.

The real "Baby Face" Nelson never worked for the Mafia, although he was, for a short time, an enforcer for Al Capone (who was never considered a Mafia member), who hired him to shake down labor union bosses for "kickbacks" to the Capone mob, but he was soon dropped from their ranks, because all too often, Nelson killed when he should have injured. (It was all the same to him.)

I think Mickey Rooney was a little TOO Overly Dramatic in his role in this movie. However Carolyn Jones - a.k.a. Sue (a.k.a. Morticia Addams of "The Addams Family" fame ) was actually excellent in her role as Mickey's girlfriend. I think her unique acting ability lies in her enchanting eyes.

I too haven't seen this movie since the 60's. I was told on the TCM web site that they didn't have this movie in their vault since they only had movies from certain studios. I too also noticed that some scenes were cut, wonder why as this stuff isn't as bad as what's shown today. Mickey Rooney was very talented as another commenter said cause he could sing, dance and act as well anyone in his time, including James Cagney. Just my opinion, haters keep your silly comments to yourself.

Sue's real name was Helen.I have been to the sight of the last gun battle in barrington, il. actually spoke to an old man who witnessed it as a boy.the movie completly leaves out the brutality of that cold day .when he walked at the gman guns blazing taking 18 bullets.dillinger joined nelsons gang.

Has anyone noticed that in the opening scene the steering wheel to the car is on the wrong side? Also, for those who are Christians, if you read Mickey Rooney's Official Website, you will discover he got radically saved towards the end of his life. to golfmeiester. The car is a Rolls Royce made in England where they drive on the other side of the road. Back then I doubt whether RR would bother to make a car with the wheel on the left side.

So I've heard. While most of the big gangsters of his day only used their guns when they were trapped by the law, and could see no way out, Nelson was quick to start shooting, because he LOVED violence, a fact that shocked even other hoodlums, including his buddy, John Dillinger.
Nelson's addiction to killing was best exemplified by his maniacal opinion on how a bank robbery should be committed. His method, which he laid out to Dillinger and his gang, was to race into a bank, shoot everyone in sight, force those left standing to hand over the money, and then, drive out of town with his gun blazing. When Homer Van Meter, a member of the Dillinger mob, who believed in more reasonable ways of robbing banks, scoffed at Nelson's ideas, "Baby Face" was so insulted, that he was on the verge of shooting Van Meter, but Dillinger talked him out of it.
With Nelson as an accomplice, the robberies committed by the Dillinger gang became more violent and bloody. During one heist, someone set off the alarm bell, and Nelson just went berserk, screaming "I'm going to kill the bastard who set off that alarm!" He was distracted, however, when he saw a policeman looking through the bank window, so he shot him instead! "I got one of them!" he yelled with glee.
