The reason why they called him a coward is because he didn't want a weapon but until he showed his true colors and saved everybody then they turn course and called him a hero and savior to those men. That's what you got to think you got to put yourself in the shoes of those soldiers he fought with they didn't believe he was worse than anything until he showed he was worth something.

One of the amazing things is that he never ran while he was up there. When he came down, his uniform was riddled with bullet holes from Japanese machine guns fired at him, and they never hit him. Just his clothes. He was praying the whole time. One of the things Mel Gibson wanted to put in but felt people would believe was when he was being brought back, he rolled himself off of his stretcher, crawled over to a man who was hurt worse than him, used his one good arm to render aid to him, and then forced the other men to take the other man. He started crawling back because a Japanese grenade had shredded his legs when he covered it to save the men he was with. A Japanese sniper tried shooting him but couldn't pull the trigger. His finger froze. He took his hand off the rifle, and his trigger finger was working fine. He went to shoot Doss again, and his finger froze, and he couldn't pull the trigger again. He stopped trying to shoot him. Later on after the war, a Japanese man came up to Desmond and said, "I am a Christian because of you." Ross gave glory to God but asked why. The man told him he was a sniaper who had tried to kill him and explained that he wondered why and started searching his soul, etc, and found God. Desmond led many men to God through his example including the enemy.

Cpl. Desmond Doss was very much a real man and everything happened as depicted at Hacksaw Ridge. We should all be so lucky to have a doc as committed as Corporal Doss was.

He was a conscientious objector who actually volunteered to sign up for the army! How crazy is that. The army put him through hell in training but stuck at it & went to war, steadfast in his principles.
After he saved a solider and hoisted them down the ridge, he would say to God "just one more" then go look for more qwounded, even germans, which shows what a truly compassionate man he was, a real hero who stuck to his principles & beliefs of not touching a gun but was able to save an incredible 75 men.

He is the legend of never giving up. Never used a weapon. Except his mind was the superior force
