- Moderna began clinical trials for an HIV vaccine and like the Covid-19 vaccine, it uses mRNA technology to teach cells how to fight the virus. Obviously I hope this works too, but this whole story is written as if there have never been any trials of HIV vaccines before, which is not true. There have been many (obviously none successful), starting with AIDSVAX in 1991. It would have been nice to have some discussion of why mRNA makes a difference in the context of other HIV vaccines. Watching this, you would have thought there had never been an attempt at an HIV vaccine ever.

It took 8 months for a covid vaccine but 30+ years and counting for a vaccine that's way more important.
Unfortunately HIV is quite difficult to combat with vaccines. Covid on the other hand is a very different virus that is thankfully very well countered by a vaccine.
Despite being easier to vaccinate against, Covid-19 has already killed more people in a the US in a few years than HIV has since it began decades ago. I’m hoping that this vaccine is effective and widespread so less people die or even get infected with these horrible illnesses.
It's because Covid is very similar to the flu virus. HIV was never as infectious as corona. Also, we didn't have the technology then.
That's due to the nature of the HIV itself. It mutates within each person it infects, and each person exposed, even a little bit, becomes HIV+ eventually, with the new variant. There have been millions of variants, and vaccines (until now, at least) have been based on a "per variant" type of technology. mRNA tech works differently. It has it's drawbacks too, but for most people, this HIV vaccine would be totally worth it!

Yes, it's been made possible by mRNA technology. The problem with standard vaccines is there is no safe way to introduce a weakened form of HIV to the body.
Not all viruses are the same some can have cures some can have only suppressive medicine while others have cannot be cured or suppressed at all just depends on the virus and its shape and it's protein culture.

How do the clinical trials work?...do you take the vaccine and then purposely get exposed to hiv ?...how else would they test it out?😳
That's called a "challenge trial," where people are deliberately exposed to the virus. We don't do that in the United States. Whether we should let people patriotically volunteer for a challenge trial is another discussion.
They test it out by giving the vaccine to one group, giving the placebo to the other group, and then waiting. If they're testing the vaccine in an area with low levels of infection and transmission, it will be a long time before they gather enough data. If it's in an area with high transmission we'll know a lot more quickly.

Assuming the people being vaccinated are high risk (intravenous drug users, people in relationships with HIV positive partners, etc?) and then see the difference in infection rate between placebo group and vaccine group, advising all to continue their current prevention methods and not assume they are immune? Care to share a link? You sound well informed.

No it would work in this case a person with HIV could get a shot which is personalized to their HIV protein caps. Then if there is enough of an immune response the person would be able to fight off their current HIV infection.

No vaccine is ever 100% effective... Also SARS-Cov-2 is constantly mutating, the vaccines were highly effective in the beginning. 95% effective in the beginning when they first came out, obviously the virus mutated in under-vaccinated populations and caused the current vaccines to become less effective over time.
