Breaking Into Composing: Must-Have Skills For Composer Assistants

- Most composer assistants take a job with the hopes of writing music for major projects. However, before any of that can happen, your focus should be on building a relationship built on trust and reliability. These are different skills, other than music writing, that can be incredibly valuable to a busy hiring composer. By taking on these tasks, you will be able to prove yourself as an asset to the composing team while learning the ins and outs of the fast-paced world of composing. Performing these tasks consistently over time can eventually lead to many opportunities, including writing additional music and, for some, eventually co-scoring with your former lead composer. I hope this information is helpful!

Fantastic videos that you post Jonas, just such useful information and a fresh approach, thank you.
Itâs my pleasure thanks for the lovely comment and happy to hear the information is helpful!
Thanks for another insightful video Jonas!
My pleasure! Thanks for checking it out
Video requests!! Can you please do a video (or all 8) for each of the tasks weâll be performing on the sequencer? I.e. score prep and printing stems as mentioned? Thanks again for the quality video đđŒ
All in the works!
Yes!! Very excited to watch every bit đ
A little off-topic, but, the only small problem with your channel I feel like... is your banner image. I get what you're going for but it looks like you fell asleep on the job. It doesnt underline you as a proactive composer and is a weird first introduction (to me atleast). Still love your channel, one of the better ones on film composing!!
@roelofmeijermusic5706 yep - been meaning to change that. I always liked the photo but someone else said something similar. Appreciate your feedback!
Hi Jonas! Amazing video! I have a question: What is the most used platform where I can find a job as an assistand? Is LinkedIn? IMDb?
I'm really interested in opening myself to this world.
I have been a musician for 20 years, as a session player. But right now, I want to know and work in this beautiful word of composition, production for film and series. Thanks!
Thatâs a good question and i may make a video about this but for now my best advice is to look up every working film tv and game composer you can. Start by making a spread sheet of all media projects from 2-3 years ago to today and then use IMDb to identify who did the music. Iâd research online who has the ability to be contacted directly and from there Iâd do research on their music, interests projects and so on so you can customize your outreach and application to each composer / studio - you never want to send a generic introduction. From there you follow up and see who has openings, a lot of it has to do with timing.
Iâd also frequent events where composers go, and donât forget a great âinâ can be through other assistants. Staff and opportunities change all the time and the first people to know or be the gatekeeper to an assisting job may be a former or current assistant
@@jonasfriedman Oh man , thanks for that detailed answer! I appreciate so much!
hello i'm a beginner in this composing world, using Fl studio my laptop and headphones to compose music, is there any sort of short course or internship where one could enroll and gain these skills quickly as well as the required experience quota to be able to ventuure into the industry
This is a great question @JENBEATZ - Iâll be releasing a lot of content covering how to do these tasks specifically so if you sign up at ModernMediaComposer.com youâll be notified when that information is available.
In the meantime I highly recommend getting Cubase (or Logic) and start moving your music creation process over to one of those applications from FL. The more you use the applications the better your skills will become and the more effectively youâll be able to assist someone. Also search Composing In Cubase and there are lots of other channels (some with good content, others not so much) but the information is there to get started!
Iâm not sure of your experience level as a musician but channels like @zachheyde offer great information about compositional process for aspiring composers at different levels.
I think I could be a good assistent đ
right on!
How old is too old to be an assistant? Is there ageism for assistant ships? If you are in your late 30's can you still be an assistant?
There are no hard and fast rules for this and honestly hiring someone in their late 30âs can have many benefits to the employer IMHO. Younger musicians and composers typically get these rolls but thatâs just because theyâre entry level positions and they attract a certain age range commonly. However the truth is âŠif someone possessed all of these skills and executed each one at the highest level I donât think anyone should care how old or young someone is because it would be so valuable to their studio. Itâs hard to find good help ⊠thatâs honestly why I started MMC and this channel - when hiring my own assistants it was clear that so many applicants lacked the essential skills to be truly valuable right away. So in my opinion there is no âtoo oldâ - all that matters is that you can do the job better than anyone else and be an indispensable asset to the team youâre working with. You just need to be able to have the ability to effectively communicate that when applying :)
i need one and this issue is the last thing it came to mind mind
Boe a good minion.
