The dinner talked about in this song is probably one of the most historically accurate moments because we don’t really know much of what happened at this dinner outside of what Thomas Jefferson wrote about it afterwards. That’s why “Thomas claims” is said a lot in lyrics. (Edit-Jefferson was known to be a unreliable narrator in these types of writings). On another note, when you see Burr jump on the table you’ll see that the color of the table is different from the color of the tablecloth that they pulled away as he was in the air. That is foreshadowing with what Burr is about to do in the next song. This song itself is a great example of how so much of the politics game is played behind closed doors. As the saying goes “more happens over lunches than what happens on committee floors”. Great Reaction once again!
And historically, Jefferson is known to write about events in a twisted way to make himself look better and everyone around him look worse. So when "Thomas claims", you can pretty much guarantee there was a bit of BS in it.
@@ms_scribbles very good point. I highly doubt Jefferson was Hoodwinked in the way that he was trying to portray in his writings on this dinner.
I also like the fact that instead of shining light to what happened in that room Burr is angry he wasn't there. It really shows how selfish he really is deep down. The song highlights the many ways politicians are corrupt.

This was definitely Burr's "Disney villain" song. It has that kind of big energy about it, like Be Prepared, Hellfire or Poor Unfortunate Souls.
He also sang in a very similar dark and deep, but loud way like scar or the guy who did hellfire
YES!! It's interesting, because heroes usually have "I WANT" songs in musicals, while villains have "I AM" songs. Burr's is an "I WANT" song, yet you know what he means -- he wants power and the security of that position, but has nothing to fight for.
I see more of Dr. Facilier in him, is that just me or...

Leslie’s “Wait For It” started him on the road to the Tony. His beautiful, clear voice in “Dear Theodosia” put him on the fast track. He won it with that final “Click. Boom” in “The Room Where It Happened”. ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!!!

LMM has said he's not the best singer, so he surrounds himself with these amazing people. It's also one of the reasons he writes musicals - it's the only way he'll get cast.

So, here Burr is talking about this meeting (that actually happened!) that Jefferson, Maddison and Hamilton had, before this they were in completely different sides, but after the dinner somehow there was a compromise made, however, how did they get to that? No one knows, because it was a closed doors meeting, but it was pretty important, considering that the place of the Capital and the National Bank came out of it, so, when Burr talks about this, he's curious as to what was said in the dinner, he doesnt get invited because he keeps "waiting for it", so he doesnt have a said on this compromise that quite literally changes the way the country function, but he wishes he had, he wants to be in the room to have a say.
I didn't notice the first time but the song and choreography show the exact same moment a number of times, just for different perspectives, Burr is just watching them enter the room, Jefferson says that Hamilton begged him to compromise, Maddison says that Jeff went to him and he came with this quid pro quo, and so on... And thats the thing, no one knows which version actually happened.
Absolutely! I'd also add that Burr wasn't in the room when it happened because he wasn't an elected official yet so he was basically useless and I think this song is him finally waking up to that fact and realizing what he wanted and then going for it

One of the most incredibly engaging, consuming performances I have ever seen! Leslie can rest o the laurels from this show and his contributions to it for the remainder of his days and still emerge as one of the greatest Broadway performers of all time.
It's true too, that the only record we have of that meeting between Jefferson, Madison, and Hamilton is what Jefferson said happened. Only those three dude know the details of how it all shook out.
And only one said anything.

A detail I just noticed…..end of Hamiltons first big song…my shot…. He ends pointing up….Burrs big solo he ends pointing down………..another detail showing their opposition

Performance is top notch, as usual, but can we give LO Jr. props for how physically demanding this is?? 🥵🥵 Ik he said this song was one of the most difficult because he is literally running up and down the stage while performing such a technically demanding song, but he makes it look effortless. This is a real turning point for Burr. Up until this point he has been very controlled. and willing to wait to make things happen. He sees Hamilton succeeding but Burr is also doing well. This is where he realizes that Hamilton has just managed to make a deal for everything he wanted financially and he is still waiting on the sidelines. We see here how much he really wants to be a part of the decision-making process. Up until now he has been a little condescending, seeing Hamilton's success as partly luck and knowing the right people. Look at his reaction when he says "You got more than you gave". He is realizing that he has vastly underestimated Hamilton and that Hamilton is now the power player he isn't.
This song is often quoted to be Burr's villain song! Because he is the villain in Hamilton's story (even though it should be Hamilton himself, he is good at self-destruction). Also, in case you didn't notice it last time, during Non-Stop Hamilton says "Macbeth" and from then on bad things start happening to him, this is a reference to the myth around Macbeth which had a series of accidents around the play back in the day so now it is tradition/superstition that if you say Macbeth in a theatre bad things will happen. The line is: "I'm sure you'll understand the reference to another Scottish tragedy without my having to name the play" so here he avoids saying it, but immediately in the next sentence he goes: "They think me Macbeth, ambition is my folly." There are so many small details like this in Hamilton that I absolutely love. Foreshadowing galore. Have you been told about Bullet yet? :D
I dunno, if you look at history, Burr wasn't just the villain of Hamilton's story. He was a con artist (the Manhattan Company, where he told people he was raising money to fix the water supply in New York to fight the Yellow Fever, but then used the vast majority of the money to build his own bank to compete with Hamilton's bank, probably resulting in many, many deaths), a thief (after his first wife died, Burr married a wealthy widow, then proceeded to take all her money and dump it into bad real estate deals until she finally divorced him), and damn near a traitor, though he got out of that one through a technicality (the Burr Conspiracy, where he dealt with foreign powers to try to create a new country with himself as the leader/king/whatever).
The play is very kind to Burr, frankly. The man was utter slime.

This meeting happened. Hamilton got votes for National bank, Stock markets to be in NYC and Jefferson got Capital moved south which of course became Washington DC. By looking at this from Burrs point of view it’s fascinating to imagine him angry that he’s not part of the big decisions
It's so interesting to me to think of all the major cities in the US that deal with completely different things. Like most countries have a central capital or power city where major political, financial, trade and transactions happen but with the deal these men made it changed the course of how the US was to be run and I really do wonder how that went over at the time saying in one city we will have finance, while another will deal with politics. Especially in a time without planes, cars, and other methods of fast transport, they really said be rich and have time to travel, otherwise good luck becoming a member of Congress.

Aaron Burr seems to fully let loose in this song! In Act 1 he seemed really stiff, and danced and sang like he refused to let out and go for it- even in Wait for It
In THIS song, however, he finally breaks and let's himself be seen.
Yes, this is reflected in the choreography. I was watching one of those behind-the-scenes videos and I remember that Lin said the choreographer made it such that Burr mostly walked/danced in straight lines up to this point. In this song he finally breaks free from that pattern and does a swooping semi-circle, and he doesn't go back to being so tight-laced afterwards.
This is the song that won him the Tony award for best actor.
His voice and energy in this show is amazing!
I remember watching this performance for the first time, nodding my head over Leslie completely stealing the show, that was until Chris ran away with the undisputed title in his breathtaking and unbelievable "One Last Time" performance! Both performances are my favorite from the whole show!

Burr is such a good character, his songs are bangers
This song is also something of an ode to West Wing by LMM (he LOVES the show, the orchestra played the West Wing theme music during the bow of his final performance). There is an episode in particular where Sam has to staff the president in place of Josh, and at the end of it he talks about wanting to be in the room.

the general idea behind this song is that the decisions made in government aren't really made in congress, they're made in the bars and golf courses and restaurants /around/ congress. you can vote whoever you want into congress but the deals and alliances are all made outside of work hours and it's about having connections. it's why there's such an emphasis on tj saying that he arranged the venue and the whole event because it's all about appearances to get what you want out of the meeting. burr feels blindsided by hamilton making deals with his "enemies" but it's just how government works lol he's definitely pissed about being blown off by hamilton at the start of the song when he walks off with tj and madison because he wants to be in the room where the /real/ decisions get made but doesn't have the right connections like alex does
What Burr is saying in this song is that literally no one TO THIS DAY knows what they were talking about. There’s no documents (that I know of) that have any information about what was spoken in “The Room Where It Happened” so ig you could take this song as a disclaimer thats saying “we’re clueless of what actually happened in that room” it’s very interesting to think about. And Thomas Jefferson’s part in this song starts with “Thomas Claims” meaning that it’s not confirmed if that was true or not. Everything they said are Claims, not true, but not confirmed false either

Really this is the story of Aaron Burr. It is his character that changes. We are seeing him tell the story of Hamilton but it is really the story of how their life collisions changed him.

Leslie Odom has a warmer tone in his tone than the man who okayed Hamilton.
And that was what got him his Tony, very well deserved
I don't know if there's a theatrical equivalent, but LMM did say that part of why cast Leslie Odom Jr. was because he has this air of elegance about him, which makes sense - Aaron Burr came from old money, and he should sound like it.

This may seem petty BUT I've noticed you keep stopping videos asking questions that are answered later in the video. It's very frustrating when you do this.
