  • A playthrough of Nintendo's 1986 platformer for the Nintendo Famicom Disk System, Super Mario Bros. 2 (スーパーマリオブラザーズ2).
This is the original version of "The Lost Levels" that was included as part of Super Mario All-Stars.
Oh boy. If you like your gaming sessions to hurt, this game ought to be near the top of your list. It's the first direct sequel to Super Mario Bros., it shares many common elements with a couple spin-offs (Vs. SMB and All- Night Nippon SMB), and it is the game famous for being passed over for release by Nintendo of America after Howard Phillips decided it was an overly-difficult rehash of the first game that wouldn't serve the brand well.
It is a bit of a rehash, and it is entirely too difficult, but it's a seriously satisfying game to fully clear. It plays a lot like SMB, but the physics have been tweaked a bit to allow for a higher bounce off of enemies, which is a skill that really has to be mastered to get through the game.
The game features thirteen worlds as opposed the first's eight, and you now get to play as Luigi! Luigi can jump much higher and farther than Mario, but he lacks Mario's ability to stop on a near dime. He's pretty much a necessity in the secret levels, but his banana peel feet really take some adjusting to.
I enjoyed the game in spite of how infuriating some of the traps can be, though as far as I'm concerned, stage 8-2 can rot in hell for that windy springboard jump. This Mario 2 is pretty much the ultimate challenge for any fan of the classic series so long as you can deal with the lack of polish (gotta loved being nailed by Bowser's fire blasts that you can't see when he's throwing hammers because of the system's sprite limit!) and the bugs (like being awkwardly teleported through the side of a pipe or staircase when the wind is blowing).
To access most of the secret content, levels A-1 through D-4, you have to beat the game eight times. Thankfully, this doesn't have to be done all at once, as the game saves progress to the floppy disk. Notice the stars on the title screen's logo graphic from the second loop on? They show how many times the game has been successfully completed. You can play with either character, and warp zones don't disqualify a run of a game from the loop count. (All of this is the same as how you'd access All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.' equivalent content.)
Here's the breakdown of the video:
Playthrough #1 is played with Mario, stages 1-1 through 8-4, no warps.
47:18 World 9 followed by a special Game Over message
52:29, 2nd loop with Luigi begins.
Warps zones are used in playthroughs 2 through 8.
    Stage order: 1-1, 1-2, 4-1 through 4-4, 5-1, 5-2, 8-1 through 8-4.
    1:07:24 3rd loop
    1:22:30 4th loop
    1:37:41 5th loop
    1:52:07 6th loop
    2:07:21 7th loop
    2:21:49 8th loop
2:36:48 9th loop played, showing secret worlds A-1 through D-4.
Wow. That's a lot of Mario.

The Lost Levels was such an awesome discovery for me when we got Mario All-Stars for Christmas in 1993, but its legendary reputation for its difficulty is well deserved. It is sooooo damn hard in spots, but that's probably also why it's so super satisfying to master.

I really don’t like The Lost Levels, as it has some punishing design choices, like warp zones where you either have to back or die. It really does feel like a SMM2 super world filled with troll levels. Not cool, Nintendo. And I think the game could’ve done more graphical improvements. Aside from a few new sprites, the game looks just like Super Mario Bros., and if you showed the average person this game and asked what they thought it was, they would say Super Mario Bros. The SNES version is an improvement but the level design still stays. Luckily, it does take away the fact that you have to beat the game 1 time warpless to see World 9 and 8 times warpless to see Worlds A-D! (Seriously? 8 TIMES WARPLESS! What a load of crap, Nintendo!)
Overall, I don’t hate the game as much as some say, but it’s easily the worst of Mario’s 4 NES outings.

😣 ( *_"Not THIS game! Not THIS game!!"_* ) Ladies and Gents, *_THIS_* is my least favorite Mario game. Before I rant about why this game blows, time for a bit of a history lesson.
The original Super Mario Bros, I believe, needs no introduction. It (alongside R.O.B. The Robot) helped put the market back into business, and ended the 1983 Video Game Crash in North America. Not only that, but the game itself is still a ton of fun to play every now and then. The colorful graphics and the catchy music, especially make it one of the most recognizable games in existence. But, as they say. With one hit, comes a misstep.
Nintendo, seeing the sheer popularity of the original Super Mario Bros, created this sequel and even showed Nintendo of America the game. Thankfully, the American staff turned down the offer for this game. So, we instead got a reskin of a Famicom Disk System game called, *_"Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic"_* . That title roughly translates to *_"Dream Factory: Heart-Pounding Panic"_* .
The game was a 2D side scroller where the plot is to save two children who were dragged into the dream world, "Subcon", by the villainous Wart. It had 4 playable characters, each with their own unique abilities. Sound familiar? It should, because that's how Mario and Co handle in that game. Also, various enemies, like Shy Guys, Ninjis, and Bob-Ombs would become mainstays for future Mario games (mainly the spinoffs). Not only that, but it is *WAY* easier and *MUCH* more fun. I consider it to be the rightful sequel to the original Super Mario Bros.
Years later, Americans were finally able to experience the *_REAL_* Super Mario Bros 2 on the SNES via *_"Super Mario All-Stars"_* (Not to be confused with the recent *_"Super Mario 3D All-Stars"_* for the Switch). This version had better graphics, better sound, and a save feature, thus making it the best way to play this game. Why, you ask? Where do I even *START?*
      POSITIVES
      • *It Has What Made the Original Game Great* (The colorful graphics, the music, the memorable powerups and enemies, you name it, it's got it! Except for good level design.)
      NEGATIVES (Oh boy...)
      • *_"THIS HORRID EXCUSE FOR LEVEL DESIGN THAT MAKES KAIZO MARIO BLUSH!"_* (It's unbelievable how much of a quality drop the level design suffered from game 1 to game 2. The original game had solid level design that really emphasizes Mario's control... this game is that, but with toxic a duo of horrible enemy placement, and level design that gives you little room for error ( *_"Get it right, or DIE!"_* ). Because of this, do that 1-Up trick at the start of the game, trust me, *YOU WILL NEED ALL OF THOSE LIVES!!* . I should note that at the title screen you can play as Luigi. But, with his terrible traction in a game like *THIS* ... don't play as him. Just don't... unless you want to experience even *MORE* rage, for some reason.)
      • *Getting to Worlds 9 & A-D on the FDS* (In the SNES version, when you beat the game a single time, you are immediately taken to World 9 (Time for some level design that spells out *_"Arigato"_* [Thank You] in Hiragana... I have a better idea of a word or two that Nintendo could've used ( *_"Gomen"_* or *_"Sugoi"_* ) [Sorry & Amazing] that can better express the feelings one might get playing this game for so long ( *_"I'm Glad that I made it World 9, but I still have to deal with the bullsh#! design."_* ).
*_"Anyway, you wanna take a guess as to how to access these worlds on the FDS... You sure... I rather you not know given the insanity of it... Okay. In the FDS version, you have to beat the game 8 TIMES IN A ROW WITHOUT USING ANY WARP ZONES! I kid you not, that's how it's done"_*
      [Sarcasm] 😊 Great design, guys!
      Final Rating: 3.5/10
Harsh, but can you really blame me here. This level design is just too insane to be enjoyed by casual players, which are the usual demographic for Mario games.
If *_you_* want to give it a try, play the SNES version with that save feature.
*ME?* Well... I'll keep playing the fake *_Super Mario Bros 2_* while avoiding this game. Scotty out!

@@amso7169 You can't warp to get to world 9, but you can warp as much as you want toward the 8x for the secret worlds. That's how I finished the game in 15 minutes on loops 2-8.
I agree with you about the warp zones though. It could be pretty soul crushing to be sent backwards in the game.

All stage hazards are in the GBC SMB DX, however world's A-D are not programmed into the game, they are there, just not accessible by normal means, and using some kind of cheat device to get to them shows that the levels are just not programmed the way they should. Howard Phillips was wise. This feels like a director's cut - in the sense of stuff that was originally left on the cutting floor for a reason. The bugs also give off the impression it was even rushed.
Of course it cannot be all bad because the "core" is the same as SMB but I think we got a better deal at the time, a repurposed and improved game that still had Shigeru Miyamoto involved and was great on its own.

I first played this when I got The Lost Levels on Super Mario All-Stars. When I finally found World 9, when I got to 9-4, I thought there was a hidden message of some kind because of the "!" at the end. Much later on, I found out the message is in Japanese, and that it says "Arigato!" which is "Thank You!" Of course in The Lost Levels, it moves on from 9-4 to A-1 instead of looping back to 9-1, and you didn't have to beat the game eight times to get to them. Was it a glitch that Nintendo corrected in All-Stars, or were they just easing off on the secret content?

This is insanely challenging! I heard about how difficult Super Mario Bros 2 was on the Famicom, but this is completely out of my league. How many times did this player have to practice to get this good? It's impressive.

As I was a kid at the time, I'm glad we got Doki Doki Panic in the USA instead of this. This is basically just the first game over again, on a higher difficulty level. Doki was a fun new way of playing Mario/Toad/Luigi/Princess.

Bruh, Family + Computer = Famicom, that's why, why the Japanese People will said the word Famicom than FC because they need to pronounced it correctly plus Japanese are shy to speak English.
