During a tense family dinner, Sam (Tobey Maguire) explodes at his daughter, Isabelle (Bailee Madison), and she retaliates with some very hurtful comments.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Jim Sheridan's film, adapted from Susanne Bier's 2004 movie, concerns Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire), a Marine who receives orders to ship out for yet another tour of duty in Afghanistan. But before he leaves his supportive wife, Grace (Natalie Portman), and his two elementary-school-age daughters, Sam picks up his black sheep brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), who has finished a prison stretch for robbing a bank. While overseas, Sam's aircraft gets shot down and he's thought dead. Back home, irresponsible Tommy gets his act together in order to be an anchor for Grace and the girls, and the two grow emotionally -- though not physically -- close. As the family finally begins to make peace with their grief, soldiers rescue POW Sam and he returns home. Sam's experiences overseas have caused him such emotional turmoil, he has a difficult time adjusting to civilian life, and soon his fear and paranoia manifest themselves in the form of jealousy for his brother's relationship with his wife. Sam Shepard and Mare Winningham co-star as the brothers' father and stepmother.

Lili Rodriguez I think he did do wrong after he came back. Yes, being in a war changes you, especially what happened to him, but to say it’s out of his control is kind of being light on him and his ordeal. Yes it was out his control on what happened to him, but that’s not an excuse to make when he is tearing up the house, becoming a danger to his family, pointing a gun at his wife and brother and trying to commit suicide by cop to get rid of his guilt. I think people overlook these things and just see that he was a soldier and his brother and wife had a romance, even though he was confirmed dead, so they get mad cause that’s what typical people do. It’s not out of his control to talk to someone or to go get help, which he really needed. His family did try to understand him, help him, and they tried to pick up where they left off but he made himself the stranger. You can’t really help or try to understand someone when they don’t open up and let you know whats wrong, he never asked for help until the very end of the movie when he was already placed in that facility.

She's not a "brat." She was experiencing very real and hard-to-handle emotions. She was acting out because she didn't know how else to deal with them. She's a little kid; kids don't know how to regulate or express their feelings to the same extent adults do. Shoot, sometimes adults don't even know how. Perhaps you should educate yourself. Also, people don't "got suffered from war"; they suffer from PTSD *due* to the circumstances and experiences of war/battle.

This scene makes me tear up every time. The actor for the girl did perfect in the role of a bratty kid who doesn't understand why her dad keeps leaving for war and when she starts making up the lies it reminded me of me so much when I was younger. She definitely sounded like a mistaught kid with parent issues. Tobey is also perfect. He keeps a straight face of horror, betrayal, and anger, but it turns out that the girl is lying but Sam in unaware. Great scene.

The dad comes back from war and has severe ptsd, he is not the same person he used to be. Since he’s been home, he has barely given his daughter any attention. This scene does a great job showing how badly the daughter wants his attention and how badly she misses the person he used to be. She is just a kid and does not know how to express these feelings. The mom and brother also have never slept together, the most they have done was kiss but did not want to take it further.
If only she understood what he had gone through just so he could come home to them. 🥺

It’s insane how many people are vilifying the child in this scenario. Yes, her father has been through hell and deserves all the empathy/understanding/help he can get, but the girl has also been through a lot and is in emotional pain. This acting is absolutely spectacular, bu I just can’t stop to think of the trauma and ptsd the girls got. Plus the dad came home from near death just to come home to his wife cheating on him and his daughter hating him. This made me tear up..

Im still amazed how Tobey acted the role of real PTSD in this scene. The way his posture is different than the others, the distracted look in his eyes, when he tenses up and breathes faster when the girl rubs the balloon.
You can also notice how he Moves his eyes when Isabelle is doing that gun-like noises, like he's trying to detect from where the Sound comes from.

I knew someone who must've had PTSD. He was 17, and his parents had forced him to attend a military boarding school that had lots of bullies, and he wasn't ready for it. When he came home he just couldn't seem to relax. I think he just wanted to avoid everyone.
