    I own the Sigma 1.4. I think my primary issues are the following: the autofocus doesn't always work (even with still landscapes), there's a bit of a barrel distortion (can be fixed in post), and honestly, I don't think it's particularly sharp.
    However: it's a good nighttime lens. I took it to the Grand Canyon in the middle of a dark night. If you use it correctly, you can get distant galaxies with this thing - at ISO 100 with f/1.4 and a 30 second exposure. That's how sensitive it is.
    You won't be able to achieve these results with something like an 18-135 f3.5-5.5 kit lens. (That kit lens actually is fairly weak for nightscapes unless you crank it up to ISO 3200 and that's fairly noisy.)

    Another cool feature to consider the GM over Sigma’s (or any other third party lens) is that currently only the Sony lenses take advantage of the breathing compensation when shooting video on the a7 IV. Definitely shouldn’t be a dealbreaker for photographers, though.

  • @saschagoth

    Great comparison, thanks. I bought the Sigma. It's very sharp and the AF is perfect on the A7 IV. I see no reason to pay twice as much for the Sony. There is no difference in the results.

    Well, after using the 35GM on my A7C, I sold the Sigma after a year of use. The major difference is the auto-focus hit rate. The Sigma seemed very accurate for non-moving subjects . In most cases, the target could be locked. However, when shooting kids running around, Sigma was not able to track the subject well. Even if it hit the target well on the camera screen, the photo was still OOF when enlarged. If you need a lens that has better micro contrast and autofocus, you should pick 35GM.

    Great video Julia. It’s worth also noting for those considering these lenses who also shoot video, the GM takes advantage of the focus breathing compensation in the A7IV. This might not matter to everyone, but the A7IV lends itself to hybrid shooters, and it is a factor. Thanks 😊

    At first I thought it was due to the angle at which I watched the video, but at the 1:11 position, it was indeed verified that the sigma's graphic distortion was particularly obvious on the model's face. Julia: Outstanding review, both artistically and technically. I noticed that the GM tended to be slightly underexposed, while the Sigma tended to be slightly overexposed, across nearly all of your shots. Since you kept everything else constant, I wonder if the Sigma lets a bit more light through (has higher transmissibility) than the GM does? Several of the Sigma newer lenses seem to have this characteristic, and that might account for the difference in contrast that you noted. I shoot with the 35 GM, as well as many other other GM lenses, and I would say that the contrast and detail that I get from the 35 is extremely (surprisingly) similar to that of the 50 1.2 GM and the 135 GM (after adjusting framing to match accordingly). I definitely have no trouble recovering plenty of detail from any of them, and haven't noticed a lack of contrast, but I definitely see the difference you mentioned in your sample shots!

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  Před 2 lety +2

      Thank you so much! Yes they probably do let light through a little differently to each other. Like I mentioned I really had to nitpick to find any differences in the image quality as they are so similar. With normal lens use (not shooting the same photos side by side like in this video) I really doubt I would have noticed that change in light/contrast as it is very minimal!

    To me a huge aspect is that you need to be able to blindly adjust aperture ring and all the buttons. So if you’ve got another g master lens or another sigma lens your brain will have learned where all the buttons are and then whenever you switch lenses you immediately know where your buttons are. This is underrated especially at an event…

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  Před 2 lety +1

      To play devils advocate, the aperture ring is pretty much in the same spot for both lenses and you can blindly change it as you can see the settings on the LCD or in the viewfinder. The other buttons yes that would take some getting used to! But for me personally I barely use the physical buttons on the lens, maybe if I need to change to MF for some reason here and there but that is very rare!

      I think both those lenses actually have quite a different look to each other and I would have to use them on the same day to really compare them. But the Sigma imo is sharper than the Zeiss. The Zeiss has a really nice character though, it just depends what you would need the lens for.

    5:11 camera screen capture lags like hell. This happens the moment the shutter button is pressed down. I have the same problem with a7c. Before a7c, I shot two years on a7ii, and there were such problems in it. My friends who have a73 and a7riv also say that they do not have such problems.If anyone knows how to solve this problem, please share your advice.

    • @juliatrotti

      That’s not what it looks like for me on the back of the camera so there really isn’t a problem to solve. The A7IV blacks out every time I take a picture, the screen recording doesn’t - it freezes the frame for a sec instead which I prefer for my CZcams vids cos it’s less distracting.

    At normal portrait distance there’s not much between these 2 lenses at all but close up image quality is where they couldn’t be more different. The GM has excellent close up IQ whereas the Sigma’s is just bad.
