    Thanks for another thorough and technical review Gerald! Considering here in Europe the Sony 1.4 GM retails for €1700, the Sony 1.8 for €700 and the Sigma will be priced at €849 and also considering I will be using the lens mainly for photography and not be close-focusing too often, the Sigma may still be the best option for me.

    Man i don't own any sigma lenses, sony lenses, or full frame cameras but I still end up watching your videos and learning so much from them because the basic principals and problems when it comes to lenses and cameras in photography and cinematography carry over across brands and models. I appreciate your in-depth reviews.

    Your reviews are as good as Sony’s latest G Master lenses. I appreciate the different viewpoints from the colabs. For me, compact size (and light weight) is everything for street photography and travel, so yet another reason the two Sony 35’s win out for my personal style and use. Thank you for these excellent series of reviews!

    Best in-depth review! On my copy of the lens I also did notice a bit of aberrations especially in the catchlight of the model eyes, when using strobe! I’ve been using A7R4, and it was quite sharp, but it was detailed enough to see that aberrations! Cheers from Japan!

    my theory with the sigma 35 f 1.4 is that they designed it to be a competitor to the zeiss 35 f1.4. its nearly the exact same size and form with drastically better images. i dont think sigma counted on sony releasing a gmaster just weeks before they released their own. i expect this lens to have a version 2 in the near future.

  • @thehotdoglover
    @thehotdoglover Před 3 lety +1

    Love the close-up wide open tests. I shoot like this as well. Have found that the Sony 35mm 1.8 makes most lenses look very soft in comparison when used this way. It's the first lens I ever used on mirrorless and never realized how spoiled I was until I tried lots of others and found that they can't even compare when used this way. Every Fuji lens I've tried is soft close and wide open; I assume they don't optimize for it.

  • @AllThingsFilm1
    @AllThingsFilm1 Před 3 lety +4

    A lot of these issues with this lens would be more prominent to photographers and not filmmakers, in my opinion. Watching a movie, I'm not going to "punch in" to look for chromatic aberration or focus bands. I guess that's one of the nicer aspects of filmmaking. Of course, the focus breathing would be an issue. And from what I've seen from this video, the bokeh is pretty clean...except when you "punch in". Thanks for another thorough Undone review. I don't know too many people that cover products with such detail, other than Philip Bloom and Jared Polin. I'm a grateful subscriber to be sure. 😀

    I recently bought the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 'Art' and I was confused b/w the 50mm, 85m, and 35mm. When comparing them with Zeiss Batis and Sony Lenses, the price makes a huge impact because of that 1.4 aperture. Also! It's built like a tank as compared to cheaper Samyang/Rokinon offerings. I tried my hands on both G-Master and Zeiss, if the price wasn't an issue, Zeiss Batis all the way. While as far as G-Master goes, both 35mm and 50mm but not the 85mm, I would rather take either the 1.8 version or the Sigma.

      @@antoniog8276 I work full time in video with higher end cine lenses, so I already know the differences. I'd just love to see it on Gerald Undone's channel, as he tends to focus on video, and his breakdowns of focus breathing, flare control, CA, and distortion are some of the best. I think it would be extremely helpful to keep things in perspective for still lenses shooters, as it might really highlight the shortcuts that lens manufacturers take to keep the prices down. From my experiences, amateur videographers simply don't know the differences and having a side by side comparison might be helpful to them.

    That's interesting how different of results we have all seen. I just looked over my head to head results on the a1 between the Sigma and the GM and found that Sigma was equally sharp (a hair better, actually), with the GM having the edge in the outer third of the image circle. I did see the CA you mention in a few shots, but not persistently like you encountered. Did your copy seem properly centered? I've had lenses damaged in transit that underperformed.

    Love that you don't put brand preference ahead of objectivity. That specular blooming and lack of contrast is a bit reminiscent of some of the super fast manual primes on the market, my M43 & E-Mount Mitakon's show this quite distinctly at f/0.95, my Voigtlander less so (still not what you'd call a sharp lens. 35mm is one of my favourite focal lengths too, though for Sony FE my favourite overall to date is the Samyang Tiny Prime. I recently lost mine for a few days as I had inadvertently put it away on my M43 lens shelf. It is just that small. Sigma are one of my favourite lens manufacturers too, so a bit of a shame they didn't completely nail this. I recently picked up the new Sony FE version of their 85mm f/1.4 and that thing is ridiculously good.

    Very perceptive review, thanks for all the details! I do think though that the Sigma is a slam dunk choice over the Sony f/1.8, because it does everything the Sony does plus it offers the option of f/1.4. The f/1.4 is flawed in some situations but in others it shines. Certainly worth the slight increment in price over the Sony f/1.8 unless size and weight are very critical or strong preference.

    Hey Gerald, love your lens reviews, but could you please start testing vignetting? I imagine Sigma's larger lenses may have quite a bit less vignetting than Sony's, especially wide open, which is quite important for low light shots where we're already cranking ISOs for the center.

    Thanks for a very comprehensive and clear review!
    Seeing this trend with more and more lenses these days .. close focussing compromised to get closer to GM infinity performance (and size/weight) at a lower price point. I guess it makes sense looking at typical usage, but I really like to shoot 24 & 35 focal lengths up quite close. Other case being the new Samyang 24/1.8 close focus compared to GM24 .. However that one did less worse compared the GM at an even lower size & price. Not sure what went wrong with the Sigma. Oh well .. luxury of choice is a good thing.
    Edit: Kinda loving the slightly outlined bokeh from the Sigma. Very nice aesthetic!

    I too love the 35mm focal length. I have to say, the best I've ever used is the Tamron 35mm f/1.4. Granted it was made for DSLRs, but even adapted to mirrorless, I find it's sharper right to the corners than native equivalents. Probably not your best choice for your system and what you do. With all the great improvement in optics in the last few years, it's great to have such an amazing option for my D850.

    How long can Canon and Nikon continue to prevent Sigma and Tamron from making lenses? There is little enough reason to buy a Nikon already, but since neither of them can ship the few lenses they make, Sony is just that much more attractive to the remaining dslr shooters looking to jump.

    Perhaps a bit off topic but: how does this Sigma 35mm f/1.4 compare to the Sigma 40mm f/1.4, size/weight excepted?

    Okay... But how does the rokinon/samyang 35mm f1.4/f1.8 compare to these sigma and Sony lenses?

    I wish this was easier for me to decide but it's not. Gerald, Should I get a Sony FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS Lens or the 24-70mm f2.8 G-master if it's only going to be used for video?
    All I see is people YouTubing with regular lenses but no one mentions the 28-135mm is it no good or is the 24-70 just superior for video?

    great review, but would have been a bit better if you showed us more outdoor images. I feel like most of the tests and comparisons were taken at very close focusing distances, which not everyone uses realistically all the time

    It is the Q2 35mm lens :-)
    I wonder if Tamron will release a Q3 35mm lens. Thinking of it Zeiss too are lagging behind on new 35mm lenses. Sony offers 4 of them while Sigma and Samyang each have 3 models. Tamron and Zeiss drag their feet with only one 35mm lens per brand

    I notice that you haven't reviewed the Zeiss Batis 40mm ... I would be interested in the Gerald Undone treatment and how it compares to your favourite 35 mm 1.8 lens from Sony...

    Hi, Gerald! A bit confused I couldn't find your review of Sigma USB DOCK for lens calibration. Is it much of a value for a Sigma lens owner? Pretty sure lots of subscribers would be happy to get it UNDONE!

    Hello Gerald, it's a great review. But I was skeptical about the Vignette of this lens while shooting the video. Can you please make a video on its Vignette Test? No CZcamsr spoke about the Vignette issue of this lens.
