IAA Miami Season 3: Episode 3
Brandon Marshall, Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson, Channing Crowder, Fred Taylor and Jared Odrick jump out the gates tackling subjects surrounding HBCU's and the NFL Hall of Fame. Chad Johnson argues that athletes don't need a Power 5 schools like Alabama to make it into the NFL. Channing Crowder disagrees and believes that the road to the NFL is much easier through a power 5 school. Jared Odrick challenges Channing to donate $200,000 of his own money to an HBCU to help close the financial gap. #HBCU #Ochocinco #Alabama

HBCUs don't look at athletes as just athletes. They hold those young men and women accountable to be more than an athlete and pursue greatness beyond athletics. Many HBCUs want their students to be more than their sport, unlike some PWIs who mostly look at their athletes as a ticket price or commission to build their facilities and presidential suites.

Steve Mcnair, Alcorn State, 3rd pick in "95, went to a Super Bowl & was the first Black quarterback to win NFL MVP. So it is possible, because it's been done. History is forgotten and left in the past, when it's not shown & spoken about. It's the instant gratification that is really being ignored. And how value is placed in material than the actual work, for these young people to recognize their worth.

Yea right prime always been about the light. Let FSU call see what happens. Let a nfl team call and see what happens. Hbcu want great players it’s easy raise the money and build state of the art facilities. These kids need to think who’s telling them to go to these schools and did they go and did their kids go. D1 schools offer these kids great everything from food to weight programs. Prime is awesome but there’s one reason he’s at jsu and that’s the bright lights back on him. If that goes he goes. If other schools call he’s gone. When his kids graduate he’s gone maybe I’m wrong and kinda hope I am because it’s good for those schools but they don’t have to get 5stars. Most schools are made up of more 2 & 3 stars anyways. Evaluate and coach the kids up.

What Coach Sanders and Eddie George is trying to do, is what the “white” colleges did to HBCU’s. There was a time, not to long ago, where the HBCU was dominate with talent. The “other schools would not play them, when they did it was a blow out. We have to remember the only reason these team are powerhouses, is because they have the kids, it’s not the school. Once our kids decide to support their OWN, the whole narrative will change. Stop thinking of the school as the resource, the kids are actually to commodity/resource, that part needs to be understood. In Florida we are having a problem with our kid going out of state making these other colleges look great. It’s the “Florida Talent” not the school.

What Jared was saying is Randy's behaviour at that time could be interpreted as him crying over the jacket and the narrative and visual, was something he wasn't too comfortable with, especially with how much athletes' personas are heavily tied to their respective sports, as if the jacket validated Randy, who on his own merit was one of the best to ever do it.

This conversation on HBCU’s is beautiful. I agree with Brandon and Ocho that you don’t need to go to Alabama or one of those schools to make the NFL especially if you get enough guys to go with you. Look at what NBA players have done teaming up on a team why can’t kids do that with HBCU’s and build strength and visibility there. Also with social media and the change over the last year these kids can get paid in college and even high school so the game is changing. I’d like to see more businesses put their money where their mouth is on diversity and give back to HBCU’s similar to Jeff Bezo’s ex wife. Can anyone go to an HBCU or does that take away from the intent? We all should be funneling money there, we owe that to the black community. The only reason Power 5 schools are Power 5 schools is because our athletes made them powerful. Is it to build a pipeline to the NFL or build the culture through an HBCU? Both are possible. Our community is fractured and HBCUs can begin the rebuilding of the foundation of community-minded leaders. Channing wouldn't be one to sit at a counter during the Civil Rights movement. HBCU's can not compete and he's right, but the bigger picture Channing won't embrace, is the movement and pursuit of a higher purpose of rebuilding Black families and communities. I also don't think Channing knows the history of how HBCU talent was raided because that's where the talent was. Yes, cultural sacrifice. We need higher profile men like Brandon, Chad, Fred, Jared, Channing and Deion to say, you will not ignore Black talent at HBCUs to keep them down and youth, you can come to an HBCU, make the league if you're gifted, and get cultural, intellectual and life development beyond the field if you're not, as well.

PREACH. The single and only reason PWIs and Power 5 schools have the resources and success they have now is simply because of their black athletes who bring the funding there with their talent. The only reason they choose these places is because of the possibility of making it to the league and even then it’s only a 1-2% chance because only the best make it. If you take away the athletes from PWIs they are NOTHING.

Exactly it would help HBCU to have more high profile student athletes go there to uplift the university as a whole and it will take strong people to change that narrative that big college’s are the only choice to be seen if the great athletes are minorities they need to push their power to HBCU’s so minorities can reap the wealth they generate to the big colleges

The money and the resources are there. They just need to funnel that to the HBCU’s and recruit and retain these students. We have to change the narrative and the idea that the HBCU is inferior. I had a chance to got to Howard and Southern. I was so brain washed at the time, I brushed it off like they were trash school. I just had to be at a D1 PWI because that’s what “they” taught me. If I could go back in time I would have gone HBCU and left SJU.
