What is amlodipine and how does it work?
Amlodipine is a medicine used to treat high blood pressure, otherwise known as (hypertension). What exactly is hypertension? Its a common condition in which the consistent force of blood against your artery walls, when your heart beats is high enough that it causes health problems, such as heart disease for example.. Blood pressure is determined both by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to that blood flow that is present in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure becomes. You can have high blood pressure or (hypertension) for years without any symptoms. Even without symptoms, damage to blood vessels and your heart continues and can be detected when you get your blood pressure measured. Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke.
Amlodipine is also taken to: prevent chest pain caused by heart disease, known as (angina).
    How does amlodipine work?
Amlodipine is a type of medicine called a calcium channel blocker. Like other calcium channel blockers, amlodipine works in a high blood pressure setting by relaxing and widening blood vessels. This lowers your blood pressure and makes it easier for your heart to pump blood around your body. AND In angina or chest pain, amlodipine works by improving the blood supply to your heart since the chest pain comes on when not enough blood gets to the muscles of the heart, either because the arteries to the heart have become hardened or narrowed.
    Amlodipine Dosage
Amlodipine is available in tablets and capsule form and in a range of strengths, including 2.5 milligrams (mg), 5mg, and maxed out at 10mg quantities. For adults: usually your doctor will have you on 5 mg once daily then possibly work up to a maximum of 10 mg daily.
What are the side effects of amlodipine?
The most common side effects include headache, flushing, feeling tired and swollen ankles. These usually improve after a few days though. Amlodipine can be called amlodipine besylate, amlodipine maleate or amlodipine mesilate.
    How to take amlodipine?
Take amlodipine exactly as your doctor has told you take it, and follow the directions on the label. If you're not sure, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
Amlodipine side effects you must know
Like all medicines, amlodipine can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Side effects often improve as your body gets used to the medicine. Keep in mind that: This medicine could lower your blood pressure too much, especially when you first use it or if you are dehydrated. So Stand or sit up slowly if you feel lightheaded or dizzy. If you experience headaches when taking it, make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Stay away from drinking too much alcohol and Ask your pharmacist to recommend a painkiller for the headache. If you experience dizziness: stop what you're doing and sit or lie down until you feel better. If you experience a flushing either of warmth, numbness, or a tingly feeling in any part of your body: try cutting down on coffee, tea and alcohol. You could also spray your face with cool water or sip cold or iced drinks. If you experience a pounding heartbeat: try to take it at a time when you can sit down (or lie down) when the symptoms are at their worst. It may help also to cut down on alcohol, smoking, caffeine and big meals as these may make the problem worse. As for swollen ankles, raise your legs when you're sitting down to prevent the swelling.
    Amlodipine precautions
Call your doctor if: An Allergic reaction:this includes Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness and trouble breathing. If you experience Lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting, New or worsening chest pain, Swelling in your hands, ankles, or legs, nausea, and unusual sweating.
How long does it take for amlodipine to work?
Amlodipine starts to work on the day you start taking it.

Good day Doctor! Iam taking amlodipine for over 20 years along with different brands of telmisartan along the way because i still have unnoticed high blood pressure unless pressured, it ranges from 170/90 sometimes over 100 then i have the notion that these medicine does'nt reactions in me. Only now that I realized those have to be taken the same time everyday. Because i take these medications different times everyday, sometimes late in the morning and so on. Do you think this is because of this habit that i still have my blood pressure high. Thank you in advance Doctor.

I've been taking Valsartan and Hydroclor. for about 5 years but 2 years ago the doctor added Amlodopine as well & attempted to add a Stanin drug which I have heard bad things about and refused to add due to immediate reaction from it. It was fine for about a year or so but now Adema has been hitting my feet as well as causing me pain and a sort of tendonitis which I blame on the Adema once it goes down. I recently cut down to half doses for about 2 weeks and now have completely eliminated them all. The Adema has gone away as well as the tendonitis symptoms so I am going to start monitoring my blood pressure and see how I am doing. I'm no doctor but I recommend you listen to your own body and do what is best for you and not take the word of a doctor that has no real idea how you are doing from day to day. Maybe consider a more holistic approach and lower your sugar intake as well as cut down on smoking & drinking. Try to get some exercise as well.
I did bring up my concerns to the doctor and he was of no real help. My understanding is that the human body needs many of the things, such as saturated fats to function properly and you are doing yourself more harm than good listening to them.

What do I do if I missed a tablet? Do I take it as soon as I remember it or just continue with the normal dose the following night?

Can you provide any insight into this medicine and hair loss? I am over 60 and have been taking this for two years. I’ve noticed significant hair loss in the past two months. I found an article that tied Amlodipine to hair loss after two years. I do have an appointment with my cardiologist in two weeks but found your video and would be interested in your knowledge on this side effect.

I have just been prescribed this and it is making me tired, sleepy and not generally very well. There must be a better drug to take. I live in the UK and I reckon it is a cheap drug. . I want Felodipine as that is better. I do not smoke or take caffeine. I do take alcohol. My Blood Pressure has been 145/71 now slightly reduced to 135/66. and I am almost 77 years old.
