Kafir from root word KFR, meaning to cover as when the farmer sow the seeds, he covers them.
Kafir is someone who hide his true face, some sort of hypocrite. Let's assume the US is kafir, then how about those "muslims" who makes long and large prayers but who IGNORE those suffering in Refugee camps. Didn't Allah ORDERED them to help the poor, else you are NOT a muslim. Who is better Mrs Merkel or the king of saudi arabia ?
Quran 2:177 Righteousness does not consist of turning your faces towards the East and the West. But righteous is: He who believes in God, and the Last Day, and the angels, and the Scripture, and the prophets.
Who gives money, in spite of his love for it, to near relatives, and orphans, and the needy, and the homeless, and the beggars, and
for the freeing of slaves;
those who perform the prayers,
and pay the obligatory charity,
and fulfill their promise when they promise,
and patiently persevere in the face of persecution, hardship/stress, and in the time of conflict.
These are the sincere; these are the pious.

For 40 yrs she spoke nothing but the Quran because she feared that the tongue
might slip and she might utter words which is displeasing to Allah(subhan).
Such was the time of piety something we lack big time,
There is nothing pious about not being able to express one single individual thought of your own. Remembrance of God is great, but Humans were not created as robots.
