  • Description of changing out the steering fluid reservoir on a 2004 Town & Country. I dove in and just did it and then realized that folks might like to see how it was done, so went back and made this. It probably took me an hour, figuring out things step by step. It was pretty messy with the ATF getting all over. Siphoning it out initially, and then after swapping the reservoir and refilling it a couple of times to flush out the old fluid was the worst part of the job. It took a couple of days for the engine to burn off most of the fluid (after degreasing the engine), and it has a pretty strong odor. Knowing how to do it now, I think it would be a 30 minute job, and then cleanup time after that. One problem that I overcame but that needs a better solution is getting the larger hose off the reservoir. There might be a tool to do that, it would be helpful to hear about your answer to that. Using a pair of pliers isn't really a good method, and I do not recommend that anyone do it that way as it can and will damage the hose. I ordered from Quirkparts on eBay and the cost was $23.20 with free shipping. Thanks for watching!

That mesh screen filter in the bottom of them reservoirs build up residue and restrict fluid flow which is the cause of the problem.
Or low fluid or nasty condition.

Great video. I was looking for a video on how to remove the ignition coil since the steering reservoir was blocking the coil, and found your video that will solve the groan/squeal I have had for the last year or so. Your fix remains me of a similar problem I had on the same van with smudge on the oil pump screener that would cause the engine to stall on high speed. Thanks!!

Nice video, thanks. A few suggestions. I used a turkey baster to remove the fluid (Bought at the dollar store). Then I disconnected the small hose and stuck it inside of an empty apple juice bottle, start the car and turn the wheel left then right a few times, that will get all of the fluid out of the system. After you reinstall the reservoir, fill it, then start the car and turn the wheel left and right again, the fluid level will drop. Fill it and repeat the process until it doesn't drop anymore. Makes for a nice, easy, process. Thanks again.

I had a similar whining sound. I checked the power steering reservoir and it was low. I toped it up with ATF+4 and that took care of the problem 80,000 miles and it runs smooth now. Cost $6.98.

    Hello from Jim
I'd like to thank you so much for this video
    I did do this myself
but without the video. I would not have known what to do first
    it help me a lot
yes you are right, the big hose was difficult
and I could not get to the bolt underneath
without removing the big hose first
thank you again from Jim IOU a beer or coffee

Been over one year now, and not a single squeal or issue with my repair. Hope this helps you guys (and gals). I was looking through receipts and the last time I took this to the dealership to fix this problem they charged me $106.24 and all they did was a power steering flush, refilled with ATF+4 and added an additive, and it wasn't fixed.

Another quick note did you bleed the system it's just like power brakes you have to get all the air bubbles out shorter lifespan on your power steering pump if you don't you may have introduced air bubbles in the system when you took it apart you may want to drain out some of that oil out of your Reservoir looks to be a little too full there are three lines on your reservoir one is add line one is the minimum line and one is the maximum line put the fluid between the minimum and the maximum line and you will be good

Nice video. In total, how much fluid did you use to flush and fill the reservoir? What did you use to clean your engine and lastly, how many miles/kilometers on your van at the time of the change?
    Thanks

Thanks. I know it was definitely less than two quarts, all of one quart and part of the second. I used Gunk spray engine degreaser (1 can, kinda tall with an orange lid) and then rinsed. It got most of it, but since it had dripped down the back of the engine where I couldn't get to it, and down the exhaust, it took about two weeks to burn off and get rid of that awful smell. It was my fault getting that fluid everywhere. The van had about 83,000 miles at the time of video. It had that groan/squeal for at least the last 4 years. I'd get tired of it, take to the dealership to have it fixed, and then it would be gone for a while. But it always came back, I think they must have just changed the fluid. They never changed the reservoir. I don't know how much money I paid, and never got it fixed right until I took matters into my own hands. It is now 5 months, and not a hint of a problem. Total success for less than $40 for everything I used. The used fluid I siphoned was taken to my mechanic for proper disposal.
