  • Have you ever wondered how to model an awesome waterfall on your own layout or diorama? This tutorial will show you exactly what to do!
    In this easy to follow tutorial I’ll step you through the process, from a bare piece of foam right up to a completed scene that will amaze anyone who sees it.
    This is quite a long video so here are some key links in the video that will take you right to the juice parts about making the waterfall:
    Painting the river bed: 17:15
    Mixing and pouring the resin: 22:16
    Making and attaching the waterfall strips: 28:55
    Adding water ripples: 32:59
    Adding rough water waves: 34:23
    Creating the water mist at the bottom of the waterfall: 39:55
    Working with resin can be intimidating for even a seasoned modeler, especially when making a model waterfall. The techniques I used to create this HO scale waterfall and river can easily be applied to almost any other scale, from N scale to O scale the methods I used can still be applied.
    If you’d like to help support the channel you can join me on patreon, I have some rewards for patrons depending on the level of support

    For more information on building the waterfall and more images you will find them at:
    www.bouldercreekrailroad.com
    IMOPRTANT NOTE:
    In the video after pouring the resin and leaving it to dry I apply scenic glue over the entire scene once I finished adding the ground foam and textures, the glue also ends up covering the river surface, because the river is made using two part epoxy the excess glue and alcohol is easily wiped away. If you use something like Woodland Scenics Realistic Water you will need to make sure you don’t get any glue or alcohol over the river surface, the glue and alcohol are partially absorbed by the surface and it will lose its glossy appearance. If you are using Woodland Scenics Realistic Water make sure to only pour the river after you have applied the scenery and sealed it with glue.
    Additional Note:
    The river is quite deep, approximately 2-3cm in parts, using a two part epoxy is usually not a problem with deep pours however 3cm is approaching the limit. If you use Woodland Scenics Realistic Water you need to make sure the river is poured no thicker than 0.5cm deep, any deeper and you risk the river cracking as it dries. To get more depth with the realistic water you’ll need to apply multiple pours until the depth you desire is reached.

    I love this, I've been bingeing your videos and they're all incredible. One thing though, the illusion on this one is being given away a bit because all of the rocky walls behind the waterfalls are dry. In a real waterfall, there would be darker, glossier areas where the wall stays wet, and there would probably be mosses and other similar plants in those areas. The wet zone would transition to dry rock gradually as the spray zone diminishes, and I think the effect could be achieved by airbrushing a slightly tinted gloss varnish over the area that you want to appear wet. Just an idea, I'm sure you'd come up with a better approach, but it's something to think about anyway.

    I would recommend adding gloss varnish or another product to create a wet effect on the rock behind the falls, they look dry and that would not be the case, also they would appear darker. You would have a waterfall "splash zone" and you would have plant life/molds growing on the wet rocks. Falling water is much more white as well and less clear.
    For additional effects you could have part of the viewing platform in the wet zone and that will add interest, you could also add mold effects such as the AK interactive product line for molds etc.

Through the years I've seen really nice scenic displays but always felt they never completed them with the small details. I know there are two sides to that coin in this life. Books on not fretting the details and books and so forth on everything being in the details. But in the case of miniature anything and especially with model railroad scenes, realism lies in the smallest of small details bar none. And this guy has that in spades. Kudos dude.

    I’m blown away at all the details and tips! I love doing detail work. Those tiny features make all the difference in a work of art like this. I’m gathering tips before starting a small water project for our outdoor landscape and I feel like I hit the jackpot here.
    I do wish the music distraction could be turned off though. I had to mute much of this.
    But thank you for sharing your knowledge!

    I love this build, however something felt off about it until today when I saw a waterfall on another video, a real waterfall. The water going over the falls had discolored the rocks behind it. The rock wall along the cliff was a light brown color, but around the waterfall, the rocks were very dark brown to black. If that one element was added to this landscape, it would be perfect.
    Keep up the great work. You have some tremendous talent and have inspired me to start modeling again. Not trains but 1/25 scale plastic model cars. Watching your videos has given me an idea to create a "junkyard" of cars. I'm disabled so this will be kind of therapeutic. If I ever get finished, I'll send pictures. That's a big IF though. 😀

    • @Rainism969
      @Rainism969 Před 5 lety +1

      Sergeant Peppers I agree with that.
      There’ always be some mosses on the rock around the waterfall. If they’re added to the rock surface it would be perfect.
      But anyway I would say even without those details this diorama looks amazing.

    6:40 Something just popped up in my head for doing that, use a syringe with no needle. Will be very fast and easy to fill all cracks with one as I see it and since the plaster is in the syringe, and not in contact with the air, it will will not dry up on you.

    • @dtiydr
      @dtiydr Před 6 lety +3

      You need to clean the brush as well and filling the syringe would just been a matter of sucking it up. I ment more of filling all cracks and stuff with the syringe and make it neat or such with the brush, thus you would always have plaster with you that never dries and it would go faster as well.

    humble and constructive criticism/questions from a fan - Shoudn't the vegetation near a waterfall be greener? Shouldn't the rocks be way way darker since they are wet ( at least near the water itself )? I love your channel.

      I agree, to further back this up is the rivers height. The water comes up very close to the grassline. This would imply that the river is at its fullest, in a tropical region this would indicate that the scene takes place in the wet season, in colder regions this could be spring time, with the melting snow filling the river. In both instances you would expect the surrounding foliage to be lush. If one were to do a realistic river/waterfall scene with dry foliage, then the river should be surrounded by dirt embankments with little to no foliage, indicating to the viewer that the river is not at its fullest, further implying drought and an explanation for the dry foliage around such a voluminous water source. Wet/clay looking dirt would also improve the aesthetic around the river.
