Not sure whether you're still interested in an answer to this, but here it is. :) So he's using an in-ear monitor which I strongly believe is making him hear his own voice too much and he's adjusting to compensate what he's hearing, by doing so his voice is not as free as in other live environments where his voice is more free and powerful (for example he really shines when playing acoustic). In-ear monitors tend to make singers sound more nasal and retained, I'm 99% sure that's the cause. You can see him struggling with that in some points, like he's paying too much attention to his voice.
I just discovered James Bay and I'm in love with his music. I love his style, and the soul in his voice. We need more artists like him.
