    I don’t paint, I have zero intention of taking up painting but I absolutely love watching these videos in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep. Sometimes you just have to sit back and admire talent.

    James I have watched you paint for almost 7 years now and you are an inspiration. I was an advertising storyboard artist using mostly coloured markers but your loose style and treatment of shadows and hues and tones is a real help. Detailing later is a key lesson for me and a lot of fun.

    oh wow, that went from being super loose to a beautiful finished piece by the end so quickly!! The lines with the fountain pen really made a huge difference, especially next to the dark shadows on the brightly-lit building, it looks so three-dimensional while keeping that impressionist look to it. I enjoy watching what you choose to emphasize or leave out in a painting.
    I'm so excited to have found this channel, I could watch these all day

    I love this art work. I have been trying to get into watercolors now. I am not a a fan of realism on watercolor because I feel it takes away the beauty of it. I like line and wash style, but I feel it can look like a cartoon. But this! This way you paint is awesome. I think I will apply it myself. Congratulations, you are extremely talented!

    I really appreciated James Gurney revealing that he has trouble accurately capturing foreshortening. I'm not a veteran to drawing and I struggle to accurately capture what I'm looking at. I thought my difficulties would go away with practice, but if James still has trouble, I understand that the struggle is something even seasoned artists deal with. BTW, thanks so much for showing how you measure what you're looking at.

    I found you thanks to Steve Mitchell and I love your work. I have never painted buildings mainly because I find the angles difficult but I might just pluck up the courage to give it a go once I have done a bit more plein air somewhere quieter where no-one can see! The fire engine made me laugh, you're right there is always something when you paint outdoors!!
