Should you wear sandals / mandals or flip flops or Birkenstock as a man or not? Let us start by saying you can wear whatever you want, whenever you want in this day and age. So the real question is would a dapper gentleman consider sandals to be in good taste?
If you're a fan of the Gentleman's Gazette, chances are you have a slight bias towards the classic realm of things.
So should you wear sandals today or not?
Now, just think about it this way, have you ever seen an outfit that you thought looked better that was based around sandals than if it would if it had regular shoes? Well, I haven't. So maybe you come up with something, if you do, please share in the comments below. At the end of the day, if you care about style and you want to achieve the classy look, I strongly suggest you stay clear of sandals in most situations.
6 reasons why men shouldn't wear sandals:
First of all, don't wear sandals because most of them look really cheap. Just think of Tevas, Birkenstocks, or flip-flops. Most of them are made out of cheap materials and that's what they look like, cheap. Even if you upgrade and you invest a few hundred dollars in Salvatore Ferragamo flip-flops, they're still just that, flip-flops.
The second reason sandals are not ideal for men is that most men don't have
pretty feet. Now, most women I know really take good care of their feet, it's just something they know they want to pay attention to because often times they wear sandals that expose their feet and they literally want to put their best foot forward. Now, the same isn't true for men. Hairy toes, ungroomed toenails, calluses, warts, and other stuff is just not pretty to look at.
The third reason is no one really wants to see your feet unless, of course, you're a foot fetishist. Just think of the person behind you on the plane or on the bus taking off their shoes and putting them right next to you, I mean isn't that ugly?
The fourth reason sandals are not a good option for gentlemen is that they're a fashion faux pas, more often than not. Just think of country clubs, weddings, nice restaurants, or cities, in general. These are all not good places to wear sandals. Why? Well, they weren't made for that environment.
Which brings us to the next point number five, sandals will make you look like you didn't put much care and effort into your outfit. Sandals are a convenient casual look that you can just slip onto your feet but it's nothing you'd ever want to show up to for interview, for example.
Also last but not least, sandals can be bad for your feet in the long term especially if you walk a lot. The lack of structure is just not conducive and the foot bed is usually quite flat.
If you decide to wear sandals how should you wear them?
I think they look best when worn with shorts, maybe a polo shirt, maybe it's so hot at the beach that you don't even need them, that's okay too. If you get those fisherman sandals, you can maybe even get away with wearing them with a pair of linen pants or let's say a pair of seersucker pants or slacks that are longer, it just has to be a distinct summer fabric, otherwise, it just looks out of place.

It really depends on the culture and climate of the country.
From a western perspective, sandals may well be viewed as too casual and to be avoided unless you are at the beach/pool area. On the other hand, leather sandals are the go-to form of footwear in much of Southeast Asia, and are typically worn instead of shoes due to the climate. Case in point, it is perfectly acceptable to visit a temple in Thailand wearing sandals, whereas shorts/sleeveless shirts are a definite no-no. Nevertheless, as this video states, there is a time and a place for everything. Sandals would most certainly be frowned upon in formal/business settings when a pair of leather shoes would be expected.

As Sven mentioned, sandals make sense in a tropical climate. I live in Canada and don't wear sandals at all, but now I am on vacation in India (where I originally am from) and I only wear sandals (not flip flops). Even when it comes to materials, you are unlikely to use leather sandals in India, especially in the south, where it rains pretty much all the time.

Back in south africa sandels are the norm for both genders even into the early months of winter , likely due to the hotter weather

Birkenstock sandals and jeans back some 45 to 50 years ago were considered quite acceptable out on the Pacific Coast of the US. I still have a pair and find them to be the most comfortable sandal I've ever owned. When the soles wear out, they can easily be replaced, a plus. That said, I generally don't wear them to town, and since I do quite a bit of walking, yes they do tend to capture dirt, gravel, and small twigs. I also agree about sandals and socks--Never! Birkenstocks can't be beat for summer wear at the beach with jeans or chinos. Oh...and regarding short pants, there comes a time when older men (like me) should give up on shorts. It makes a man look like a ten year old boy; something I try to avoid.

I wear sandals occasionally because I live in a tropical island in Japan so it’s a common look out here. But nonetheless, I saw someone the other day with a button up, gold watch, dark blue jeans and..... sandals. Way to just throw your entire look away lol

He was refering to rubber or plastic flip flops, not Birkenstocks. Birkenstocks are not poorly made but they simply look ghastly outside the house. If you ask me: they look ghastly inside too.

7th Reason why men shouldn't wear sandals: By & large, women can't stand them on men, *especially* Flip-Flops!!
Note: I don't consider Huaraches, sandals. (Which is why they look good & can be worn with other outfits!) Especially the ones you showed. Aside from the closed heel, the toe is completely covered from view, even if air can get through. (They are like Boat shoes, but they breath, and made from leather, they still look classy.)

      @leighsutherland6222 Před 4 lety +1

Flip flops are not sandals. Not even close. However, you are right that normal, well-adjusted women hate men who wear sandals! Less than a half percent of men in the world can rock sandals. Do not assume you are one of them. Flip flops are perfectly acceptable. I live in a resort town, and unfortunately, have seen it all.

Birkenstocks and their less known predessors, Moosbacher (by Bama), were the signature look of the "Eco", the "emo" of the 80s. I was part of that sub-culture for a while, we dressed very casually, mostly in nature colours and materials (cotton, linen etc), second-hand shopped most of our stuff, used recycled materials, cared about the environment and basically were very angsty about the future, with toxic rain, nuclea war lurking around the corner, poppers and yuppies ruling the mainstream, we longed for harmony in nature and spirit. We wore our clogs and sandals all the time until they disintegrated. The hype about Birkenstocks only reached unknown heights in the 90s and 00s after the brand was no longer hip among hardcore afficionados, they are made in China now and part of the big profit machine that's fashion and footwear in general. When they were still a niche-product, they were really nice and had a total feelgood-factor.

"Chinelo" are flip flops, sandals are women's shoes

Lot's of idiosyncratic factors here, in South America and Europe they are worn every time. Thumbs up for the Huaraches; the Espadrilles/cocuizas/alpargatas can be very stylish and exotic, Italians have great taste for them and use them all the time, it's a "Latino" thing.

Ralph Lauren has a pair of purple label fisherman sandels, I can honestly say that pair beats the Church's version, and can be worn with summery suits due to the closed toe cap area.
