Hilda brings so much humor and pathos to this show. She is my favorite after Elsie Tanner. I just wish they had let her have a few breaks, just one close friend or some good luck.
She did close fo the end of her time
They gave her a happy ending by sending her to a position at a doctor's house in an idyllic setting. She was still a skivvy though...
Golden era , when coronation street celebrated Christmas and had a sense of humour and storylines that reflected the country , sadly never to be seen again , coronation street today is depressing and indischwishable from Eastenders with its depressing themes ,

I miss Coronation street of old. Stan and Hilda were my favourite characters along with Blanche who became full time in later years.
O wow I remember this so clearly. I was only 8. But Lens quip about the packet of fruit gums is legendary 😋 👌.
I was 8 too. Now 46 years later, at 54 (born 14th December 1967), I'm watching this for the first time, (well that I can remember anyways). We always watched it. It however rings no bells, so it didn't stuck in my very young mind or long term memory.
Ray's hair looks much better a bit shorter.

I missed this episode….having emigrated to Canada earlier that same year….. loved watching it made me feel nostalgic…. These were the best golden episodes ❤
God, Linda-- I emigrated to Canada exactly then, too, but as a child and not wanting leave England and my family ... going to back to England after decades in America.... going home forever and never leaving!
Whenever I see things like this, it always makes me wonder where the children in the audience are now...all in their 50s
Deidre and Ray were made a good couple. Seems like they had good chemistry.
Great episode however if I were a kid in that audience I’m sure I’d be bored stiff 😮. What were they thinking 😂. Good times, good memories. Hilda…my favorite, hands down!
Just recognised what Ernest’s playing ‘Happy Days are here Again’. Anyone see a children in need thing years later, with Bill Waddington, Sally Dynevor, Liz Dawn, Jonny Briggs and Lynne Perrie singing it?

Tricia had a good voice and had previously been on the lunchtime kids show Handful of Songs

I'm surprised at Tricia's voice. She sings quite well.
She was in a children's programme for Granada called "a handful of songs" around 1973. It was really good.

Classic corrie
This was during the time that Bernard Youens had a minor stroke and was absent from the show for 2 months. The poor chap was never the same after that. He did return to filming but sadly his stroke left his speech impaired hence why they bought Eddie in. Before the stroke, Stan was clear talking and much more active.
These days they would have got rid like a shot..
Class acts, this lot - seemed like 'light entertainment' but it's so much better than muc of the stuff around today. Great acting, especially both Bets, Hilda and Rita.
