- In this video I will be Raptor painting my 2017 Mercedes Sprinter van with rollers and brushes. The van starts as a basic fleet vehicle and the video goes through:
Equipment required to prepare the van for painting.
Techniques and tips to make the process easier.
Cost and timeline of the project to completion.
Raptor paint is usually sprayed on but can be applied with a roller and brushes with a little care. The finish is not quite as good as spraying, but for a budget paint job you can achieve a pretty good look.
Great video! Everything explained so well and having considered roller painting my own van I now feel confident to give it a go. Thanks!!
Excellent video,clearly explained and demonstrated.
Looking forward to seeing more 👍
Thankyou. I appreciate the feedback👍
Fantastic information 👍👍
Thanks 👍
Wow really gutsy, I'm a spray by trade, can't believe you did that with a roller, well done fella
Thankyou. The finish isn’t as good as a spray, but it’s come out quite well I think.
Well if its worked nice one, not everyone has somewhere to spray a van my friend, Im surprised the paint didn't shred your rollers because it's gritty Lol
@@user-hq6ud2om1zit did. It’s why I went with the foam Hamiltons. They lasted a little longer.
Hi You have made a really good video here ,in real time and im a old school decorator i like your practical approach to doing this job .Regards Chris
Hi Chris. Thank you. I appreciate you watching, and your positive comment🙏
Great video mate. Just got quoted 5k for a respray on my van so was thinking going this route. For a work van so perfect 👌
That’s a lot for a work van. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Fantastic informative video & very well presented. Kept me interested all the way to the end. Well done sir
Thank you for your kind feedback. Are you doing a van yourself?
What a lovely fella 😃
You wish neighbours like this chap. I have one like this one. I love him to bits 😃 I plan to roll my 27 years old Mitsu but I'm gonna use the raptor roller. That needs only one layer as it lays paint much thicker. With the not so correct roller it's time consuming AF. At the end of the day it's the result and the enjoyment the process gives that matters, I know 😊
I just don't want to spend 3-4 days doing it. I've got sooooooo many things to do😃
It’s worth investing the time in proper preparation. And being honest, if I had known about the Raptor rollers I probably would have used them as well😁
Great video very informative and clearly Presented.👍
Thankyou. I appreciate your positive feedback👍
love this video . i bought my van part raptored n it needs doing properly, youve inspired me to do mine properly
That’s great. Please send me pics of the finished van👍
Great demonstration video, thank you 👍
Glad you found it useful, and thankyou for commenting.
Fantastic and very informative! Eacrly what I’ve been looking for!
Glad it was helpful!
Good info mate well projected
New subscriber from my self
Excellent demo and explanation 👍
Thankyou
I used artex rollers , it gives a rougher texture and they don’t dissolve like the foam ones
That’s a good shout. 👍
Coolio 😎
I want to raptor my ambulance one day, I've rollered quite a few motors over the years but usually use military paint, not used raptor before so it's well handy to watch somone doing it first 👍
Subbed 👌
The raptor is a little harder to work with, but forewarned is forearmed😊 Thank you for the sub. I appreciate it👍
Fantastic result. Looks amazing!! My white 09 sprinter camper is in urgent need of a repaint. So much rain and salt on the roads has taken its toll. Needs a lot of work but I’m taking a week off work to sort it. Thank you for taking the time to share this great advice . Helps massively of what I’m up against. New sub 👌👍👍
Thank you for the kind words. Please drop a picture here when you are done. I would like to see it.
@@TheadventuresofFatboy takes a lot not only to go to the trouble but you’ve explained in great detail too. I’m going for black raptor on bottom under the bumpers and on the bonnet and at side window at sliding door and universal window panel. 2 bottles will be suffice. Going for military paint the rest in an olive / grey colour. Will definitely share a pic once completed 👍 cheers again
Looking forward to seeing it:)@@nuklearpuppy
I swear by that Car Plan black trim wax. I've tried countless products, all costing more than the Car Plan stuff. Lasts a fair few months & the next time you'll find you need to reapply it, you will find you need to use less and one application will do the trick.
The NATO green looks ace & really suits these Sprinter campers.
Thanks for the tip on the car plan. I’ve been looking for a good one to keep it looking nice. I like the NATO green as well.
Fantastic video
Thankyou👍
I roller painted my sprinter, using 'military paint' umbra grey colour, turned out better than expected.
That’s awesome. Do you have any pics?
Come across this video as all I’m watching lately is campervan conversions to get ideas for my own. As soon as it come on I said to my partner “ that looks just like the guy who’s dog Millie (my boxer dog) played with down mathern field “ turns out it was you 😂. Really sorry to hear about fatboy , he was a lovely dog.
Thank you. It is a real loss and we miss him a lot. I hope you guys are well. Do you have a camper?
@@TheadventuresofFatboy yes I’m in the middle of converting a MWB Ducato. Hopefully be done by the end of next month !
This is really good! In a few months i am having to go van life full time to save money (terrified). I'm looking at a Transit MK7 which needs tidying and this will work a treat. May have to live in a van for a few months but i still want it to look nice lol
Best of luck! I’m sure it will work out ok.
I use boiled linseed oil, slightly thinned with white spirit, for the plastics, works great.
Thank you. I will give that a try.
ce mec, c'est le TINTORET du rouleau, il assure, quel coup de poignet !
👍👍👍
New sub! Great video! Am rollering Betty with black hammerite......similar finish but much cheaper 🤣🤣
Fantastic. I hadn’t thought of that. Stick up a pic when it’s done if you can. 👍
@@TheadventuresofFatboy will do 👍
TOP JOB !!!…Flare pods…. Where from mate?.
I can’t remember his name. Some guy in Leeds. I’m sure if you put it into Google you will find him. He delivers nationally 👍
Did ypu know raptor do the propper rollers to? They resistant to the chemical so they don't melt the foam and they also textured to give a better finish. I sprayed mine, give ot a scuff with scotch pad. Tintible coverage is terrible takes twice as much to cover unlike the black and white which is excellent.
I didn’t know about the raptor rollers until the other day. And I agree, the tintable version covered way less. It’s something worth noting for people choosing this route to paint their van.
Would it be worth painting it all black and then covering with the green. Thinking it might cover better?
No I don't think so the tintible stuff is no where as covetable as the black or white, just so you know I used 7 bottles 4 coats to get a good coverage on a vauxhall combo not including roof I painted that black with only 2 coats. I sprayed mine much better finish.
If you chuck the micro fibre rollers in the washing machine before using, they'll lose all the fluff and fibre in the wash.
That’s a great tip. Thank you👍
Fab video. Im about to raptor paint my vw lwb... im not sure if roller painting it better than spraying.. any idea whats more economical ?
Being honest I don’t know for sure which is cheaper. I would think rollering, but I don’t know.
So you used white spirit instead of using a degreaser? Good tip on feathering out the edges looks great ❤
Yes, didn’t use too much and give it time to evaporate. Thanks for the positive feedback👍
thinking of raptoring my sprinter. Only problem is that it has abbout 2 coats of other paint to go over. The sills are being replaced hence I will need to paint it. It is two colours atm. Silver and blue under. I am thinking of the raptor blue on the lower bits inc bumpers. But am a bit nervous about the under paint. I dont really want to sand it down other than a key. Any thoughts. ?
Being honest I would talk to a specialist, but my opinion for what its worth would be you need a solid base which may mean you have to take it right back.
When you say about the Hamilton rollers do you use the short pile or medium ones? Whats the difference?
I used foam rollers. The sponge ones. If you are using the non sponge then go with short pile. But sponge worked best for me👍
Do you think it’s presentable and worth doing on an older sign written van as we plan to sell it once converted but the white paint is a bit tatty
Did you paint the roof as well? 6 litres of green hardly seems enough.
Hi, I did but only one coat and with the fans, skylights and storage the surface area was less. As mentioned in the video, the whole thing could do with another light coat over the top, as the green doesn’t cover as well.
Seriously considering doing this on my Boxer but it is a terrifying prospect to sand it all down and then have it peel off. How durable is the Raptor paint? Does is react to heat of peel off?
I have done this on my past two vans. The last one went over 4 yrs with no problem.
If you're worried about durability, Speedliner Pro is a better product to use. It has more flex to it meaning it won't chip or crack long term which some people experience using Raptor. Search for long term Raptor reviews to get an idea.
@@chrisb5839I’ve not heard of that product. Thanks for suggesting it, and I will take a look for future use.
@@TheadventuresofFatboy it's a DIY version of 'Speedliner' which has been around for about 20 years or so but was only available to trade customers.
@@chrisb5839 That would explain why I have never heard of it if it was trade only. I will take a look. Thanks
Where did you get the flare pods from???
Some guy in Leeds. I can’t remember his name unfortunately.
@@TheadventuresofFatboy
They look like A2B pods from Anthony Bradshaw. I have a pair on my van.
wow how much you charge, i need my doing?
I’m afraid I’m too busy doing mine to pimp myself out🤣🤣🤣
