How wonderful to hear this again. The song is so timely, unfortunately it was written in the 70's and still applies today. If we could only learn from the past. It's always a pleasure to hear Mr. Russell!
Leon Russell is a legend. He was one of the original Wrecking Crew studio musicians and was responsible for a lot of the orchestration for songs in the 60s. He then went off and had his own renowned career. I had the privilege of seeing him three times before he passed. I even did a tribute to him on my channel using this song. Only video I ever did.
Thank you for this great reaction video, Harry.
Leon is a Legend, He is Buried about 2 Miles from here, Sweet Home Oklahoma is a greats Song by Leon, You got to hear it 😁
Absolutely a musical giant. Listened to him all through my younger years and after. I imagine he has influenced the American musical landscape in a major way.
Leon was Elton John's biggest inspiration. Leon effected American music in a way that cannot be undone. Literally leaving a "lasting impact" in the greatest meaning of the term.
The Church of Leon. Some of his songs are truly a spiritual experience.
From the 1971 album, "Leon Russell and the Shelter People", his 2nd album. This is one of Leon's most tender well crafted ballads with perfect instrumentation. The melody is contagious, with minor key gospel lines that intermingle around the piano and stunning vocals by the gospel choir.
A song of hope that we can teach our children to love themselves and spread the love so we can all get together and live in harmony. We have to keep trying. ❤
Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Frank. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Great album! I believe that it was also filmed as The Homewood Sessions, I saw it on live TV in 1971 on PBS. It's now on CZcams and is as fantastic today as it was then.
I just finished listening to the album. I never missed a single opportunity to see Leon Russell perform. Genius!
Love Leon. More, please! Check out "Roll Away the Stone", "Leaving Whippoorwill", "Masquerade" and the studio version of "Song for You".
A favorite on the playlist of my life.
LOVE! A beautiful song. One of my favorites by LR.
One of my favorite tunes by Leon. And choir! Good idea, Harri! Great reaction! Thanks.
I feel like Leon is rooted in the blues so you still feel them even in non-blues songs. For me, this is a good thing.
Please try Dixie Lullaby from his Leon Russell album. And maybe Tight Rope.
✨✨💜LEON💜✨✨
This is one of the songs I will take with me when I die. The harmony raises me up. Today is my birthday. I’m 71.
One of the greats. Leon ♥️.
Rainbow in your eyes is a prog pop song that deserves a reaction
I was just about to say Leon will take you to Church and you said it!
Leon was so great. Check out his song “shootout on the plantation “
Stranger in a Strange Land is the title of a science fiction novel by Robert Heinlein. It was quite popular in the 60s.
I grok you....😄
Thanks guys, one of my favorites
I consider myself fortunate to have seen Leon Russell with Willie Nelson in '79 !!
I saw that tour also, in Mobile, AL. Leon & Mary with Willie. Fantastic night.
His piano is so distinctive, Tightrope is another great song from him and his ending piano outro on Cry me a river with Joe Cocker is Leon to a T. Love his voice too
miss Leon genius
Oh man, from the heavens… 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼Hope to hear more Leon on this channel, the man was on fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 The new book on him is highly recommended. Great story.
I miss him
The main thing wrong with this vid is that you/we couldn’t see Leon sing it.
I see the uplifed spirit in your face when you hear this... I feel the same
Like Carol King. They wrote so many songs. Leon Russell. Oklahoma Man. Both Legendary.
thanks for giving the great Leon Russell a listen
Leon and Clapton doing Tulsa time is a classic.
Oklahoman's own, now, in that heavenly choir! Rest in peace, and thank you Harri!
I saw him perform in his later years 💔 RIP Leon
First time I heard this song was at the Green Dragon Lounge in Tulsa Oklahoma. Flip side was Wild Horses! Tulsa was Leon's home town!
One of my favorite songs ever, thanks for the wonderful reaction to it, Harri.
I grew up in Oklahoma, and my older siblings used to go hang out with him and the Shelter People when he used to throw parties at his place up at the lake.
Leon was one of a kind, known as the “master of space and time”. I’d highly suggest a couple of deep tracks to follow up with.. “Humming Bird” will definitely take you to church with its soaring chorus, “Magic Mirror” will tug at your heart string with its social relevance, and “Lady Blue” will seduce the socks off anyone with a pulse.
I also had the privilege of meeting Leon and hanging at the lake house . We share a blessing not many can claim ✌️❤️
@@okpainter9700 Right on, man.
My sister had hair down past her butt back then, and was believing she was the reincarnation of Jesse James round that time. She was a barrel racer, so that whole thing kinda served as par for the course with our parents.
God bless you all. 🤘
A concert headlined by Leon Russell back in the day a rock and roll revival meeting! Every song was played at least 1 & 1/2 time as the recording. The man tore it up and had the audience in the palm of his hand. This song initially is about the birth of Baby Jesus. The original lyrics show the “Baby” capitalized, born in a stable which he described as having “a burro in the palace of a King.” Then Leon brings it around to all of us being born as strangers in a strange land. Great stuff, thanks Harri!
Back around 1971 I used to listen to this song and the album it was on over and over. Great album and singer. Saw him live only once in Gainesville, Fl. back in the 80's.
Frank - It's hard to go wrong with anything from Leon, and you chose one of his best. Harri,, I really enjoyed your comments as usual😎
Leon is one of the best things to have ever come out of Oklahoma . So proud he was one of us . I went to the 50th ann party at The Church Studio celebrating the Carny album . Tooooo much fun : ) . Continue the trip into the awesome rabbit hole that is Leons catalogue . ✌️❤️☕
Hard rain going to fall
Yeah..
Also Delta Lady,Jumping Jack flash, and Sweet Emily
Leon co-wrote with Delany Bramlett the phenomenal Carpenters hit "Superstar".
Harri I know you've heard it!
You just walked in on a treasure here.
Man, it’s been a long time, but it’s so excellent to hear that again. He has jammed with so many people in his life, he’s just an incredible talent. One of my all time favorite songs was penned and performed by him, ‘A Song For You’. Karen Carpenter made a beautiful cover of it, but it just doesn’t beat his rawness, and the casual way he played the piano that made it just solid gold. If you watch him being inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame by Elton, it’s truly moving, both what Elton says, and what he says.
Great old song!
I’ve seen Leon Russell perform more times than I can count. Mostly he would travel with Joe Cocker and we always had a blast. The Fillmore was the best venue by far.
this is pretty much the way i feel these days...old dogs aren't meant to deal with the kool-aid the world wants us to swallow! Great tune brother.
Leon doesn't get the accolades he deserves. He worked with so many artists and inspired many more. Part of the wrecking crew. Organized the band for mad dogs and English men tour. Helped with the concert for Bangladesh! He was the master of space and time and will always be one of my favorite artists. Shootout on the plantation and she belongs to me are also some of my favorites check em out if you haven't already.
It's from a book about changed reality. I think?
❤
Check out the Homewood Sessions!!
1st rap song.
The visual component of this video was done by a person not associated with anyone involved with the record label, the recording studio, its staff or Leon, it was done many, many years after the album was created. Not that the pictures and all aren't good, just realize any thoughts/ideas/feelings/etc
are not necessarily what Leon was part of.
